Rave, you know Sigmund Freud did a lot of research on oral fixations, people thought he was nuts back then and some still do now,I think as former smokers we can relate to his theory. The oral fixation is a LOT of it--think about it,those that don't vape compensate with food, chewing gum or whatever. If there wasn't an oral fixation there then why do some former smokers get obese?
My MD one time got on me really hard about me giving up smoking,to the point I just couldn't keep my mouth shut. I said,"Look Doc,I've given up drinking, and I've given up sex,if I give up smoking I'd be a perfect person and the only perfect person I know of was Jesus Christ." His reply was,"Well you should start having a sex again" To that I shot back,"And risk getting AIDS?" (I hope that didn't offend anyone,it wasn't meant to be offensive)
Point is what is most important worrying about an oral fixation or feeling gratified by vaping where you don't want a cig?

Amen to ALL of that!

I did have an interesting talk with my sister in law who is a nutritionist involved in a lot of studies. Their findings were that many folks gain weight almost immediately upon quitting smoking - even if they eat no more than they did before. Weird huh? The only theory that they could come up with is that the human body immediately recognizes that something is missing, something is not right here and begins to store calories for an upcoming crisis.

That IS interesting. Sounds logical to me, after all quitting smoking without vaping is a crisis--more like a train wreck waiting to happen don't you think?

Pretty much! From personal experience I can say that something similar happened to me.

Back in 2004 I went on a trip to Alaska with some other pro wildlife artists. None of them were smokers. Smoking would have been a major inconvenience in the car, on the buses in Denali, and in lodging situations. So - I left my cigarettes with my husband when I got on the plane at O'Hare airport, and hoped that the adventure would be enough to distract me from my withdrawal.

The safari was three weeks, during which I had no cigarettes at all. I chased caribou up mountains, climbed more mountains for dall sheep, and hiked in the tundra for hours on end which is NOT a walk in the park. It was non-stop hiking and climbing. We'd grab handfuls of blueberries or bearberries for snacks during the day. At night we'd throw some lunchmeat with a slice of cheese between a couple pieces of bread and call it dinner. This was the budget way to tour Alaska. We did cook up a salmon one night that we caught by catching it by hand in a stream. Not an easy task! I'm guessing we burned up twice as many calories catching it than we gained by eating it.

I gained 18 pounds on that trip! Now - how does that work?

Been busy the past few days, and didn't have a chance to keep up with Voltville. Yikes! Lotsa fun trying to play catch-up! I did manage to find a little time to place my Memorial Day sale order, though. I'm giving the X2 and clearo a try, as well as stocking up on some cartos. That should keep me going until Independence Day. Maybe. ;-)

We're taking a group ride June 2nd to a little town in the mountains near San Diego, Calif. Should be a nice run.

Heading to Julian, perhaps?

Thank you, Marlou - But I am sorry that I made you or anyone else feel bad.

Dealing with problems is part of the human condition. Sharing our experiences and talking about these things is what makes our relationships more meaningful. I'd much rather hear about what's really going on in your life than hear about the weather. It's great that we have a little extended family here where we feel comfortable to talk about these things. :)

My sixth month anniversary of being "smokeless" got by me. I am halfway to being a vet...went by fast.

Congratulations, Lilac! :toast:

Oh wow what a GREAT adventure that had to have been.I've always wanted to go to Alaska.Do you still paint Rave? I'd love to see some of your work.
I think Semi is right you probably gained a ton of muscle mass from chasing caribou, and maybe stress had something to do with it to.
Your one gutsy lady Rave,3wks without a cigarette, thrown in with a group of non-smokers to? Look,I'm not a lawyer or anything but I have watched Perry Mason, and Matlock, I don't think the statues of limitations has ran out yet so don't confess anything, just save it for a movie.LOL (Have to admit that would make for a great psych thriller):p

You know, I got to thinking(something I try real hard not to do),but it would be nice if we had a "hug a non-smoker day",for those heretics that have forced us to find an alternative to smoking. As annoying as they are, they really did us a favor. We just can't let them know how great vaping is:vapor: The thought just came to me, as I'm finally tasting the orange, lemon and hint of clove in DJ. A smoke NEVER tasted this good.

Stress? What stress?

 No, no one expired during the journey. There was one guy that almost met his maker though. I was lagging behind a bit because my leg was giving me fits. At the time I had no clue that it was MS that was causing the difficulty. Anyhow, he called back to me on the way down a "trail" (and I use that term loosely) - "Hey Raven, ya know the grizzlies always go for the smallest and weakest, right?"

Raynes - I haven't been able to paint since 2008 but I haven't given up hope yet. You can see some of my work if you open the "A Few of My Paintings" album on my Profile Page. The first one isn't a painting, but it took almost as long as one.

Welcome to Voltville, Raynes and 2tone. Glad you are here.:)

Hi lilac, been here almost since SI began. Mainly a lurker. I do have to say that having so many cheery and chatty people in one place is heartening. I usually pop open a beer and make myself comfortable. Maybe if I get enough of a buzz on, I'll feel chatty. Until then, I'll be in the background enjoying everyones company.
Thanks for the greeting!

RAVE what a TALENT you have !!! Such an eye for detail, the tiger looking at its reflection in the water, looked so real even on a computer. You WILL paint again,God didn't give you such a gift to let it go to waste I firmly believe that.
