Speaking of projects, today, before tutoring, I returned the picture frame I had tried to put Maija in. Did I mention one of the things that you turn to hold the backing on broke off? They took it back with no questions asked and gave me another frame of the same kind, plus I bought 2 more, since that was the last frame. So now all I have to do is put Maija into the new frame and give the picture to Deb. Then, a new project. I may go back to trying to draw Gabe. He's a young horse, so dark brown that he might be considered black. I picked a rather difficult angle because he had a look of innocence that I associate with a youngster. I have an easier pose of him, but I didn't really like it as much. So this will be a challenge, and I'm sure all of you will see many versions of it before it's done.

One thing I noticed in some videos I watched was that they put the background in before the foreground stuff. i always put the background in last, so I don't smudge the background into the horse. But now I wonder if it should go in sooner. It's really difficult to get the background in around all the little details. Maybe it'd be easier if it went in under those details. Hmm …

Terry, how did you do the polar bear? Bear first and then background, or the other way around?

Sometimes I do the background first if there is going to be a lot of detail in it that would be hard to get around. In the Polar Bear pic I sketched in the skyline, then tree line, then snow line, then water line then iceberg line. I then did the sky and clouds then started on the polar bear. I didn't really get into much detail until after the bear was done or when I was waiting for Rave to get back to me.

With the Eagle I did the eagle first then the background. Hope that helps.

With your horses, I don't see how you could do the background first because the background isn't going to be the same color as the horse and not being familiar with pastels I would think it would be hard to get the horse the color you want drawing over the background color.

Here's a good chance for you to use your imagination. Can you do the easier pose and give it the look of innocence?

No, I doubt I could do that. I'll just struggle with the harder pose and hope I can still get that look of innocence. That's going to be one of the challenges, I think. I had to strain hard enough to make Maija look sweet enough to satisfy Deb!

As for the background, I have the horse already blocked in and colored roughly, so now might be a good time to put in the background. I'm still mulling that over.

I think it would be a good time to do the background. Then you can have the mane and tail flowing into the background instead of having to color the background in tight places. Just my :2c:

Just stopped in to say......... what talent there is on this thread! I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed reading about your creative processes.

I have art from many artists all over my house (including my dad's). I've always enjoyed going to local art shows (including ones in other parts of the country) and have allowed myself a generous budget every year to make purchases at these shows. There is nothing better than falling in love with a piece and meeting and discussing it in a casual atmosphere with the creator. Even though I have done this for many years, I still connect the person with each piece and it means something to me.

Hearing you all talk about what you are doing is really enjoyable!

I'm a "builder". I've worked in stained glass for years; only as a hobby. I'm excited because next month I am starting two night classes - one in lapidary and one in silversmithing. My dad did both (as well as painted) and I have many pieces of beautiful jewelry that he made. I never did the work myself---just greatly enjoy wearing the jewelry!

I kept all his material........stone (rough cut, some ground/shaped but unpolished, and some polished slices) and silver, after he died last year. I had intended to incorporate it into stained glass work. I was pulling stuff out of a closet in early December and found a container with scrap silver. I had seen it before but this time I really poked through it. I saw something gold, saw the year and the inscription inside the band, and realized it was his high school class ring (minus the rectangular stone). I never knew it existed. I took it to a jeweler who rebuilt the bezels and got a nice piece of lapis for it. I gave it to my nephew for Christmas.

That was my inspiration. I know what I'm getting into - I just want to see how much I like it. It's funny: when he was really into it, I didn't have much interest in it besides looking at the beautiful stones he cut open, and the vacations centered around panning for rubies, finding Lake Superior agates, etc.

    So, something new!

That sounds really cool. I always wanted to get into rock polishing but never did. BF loves panning for gold and that's something that I'd love to try too. We might do that next summer now that he has a van we can camp in. Good luck with your school and new projects. It's funny that daughters follow in their father's footsteps. :) My dad liked to build things and so do I.

Hi, Lisa. Welcome -- though I think you've been here before, right? I'll be interested to hear about your jewelry projects. That sounds so neat! And maybe you can join us and photograph your work and share it. We'd love to see it.

My mom worked for a stained glass studio for years, so I sort of grew up knowing the vague outlines of the process. The place made stained glass windows for churches and other buildings, some pretty famous. Willet Stained Glass Studio. Ever hear of it?

Hey Sandy. Today's the big day. The gun show and I'm up ubber early and feel like :censored: But it will be good to see my brothers again. It's been awhile and we are all gun enthusiasts and it's the 2nd day of the gun show so there might not be as many people there. Also, there a ball game today that might keep a lot of people home. Here's hoping. :toast:

I hope you all have a great day. I'll be leaving soon and will be gone most of the day.

Have fun at the gun show, Terry.

I almost feel human this morning. Coffee is on. 20 degrees out and another nice day. Hoping to get ahold of Steve the Trainer and get over to his place today. Calling my client for tomorrow and cancelling. He has lung issues and I sure wouldn't want to give him this disease.

Nevada is looking in the window "Hey, can't you see that I am hungry?" Gotta finish my coffee, haul some hot water and throw some hay.

I like your polar bear a lot, Terry.

There's an hour out of my life I'll never get back. I gotta get some stuff done so hanging up on Dell and trying again later.

In cases like that, I like putting the phone on speakerphone and doing something else at my desk. Or you could read a book. It's maddening to be put on hold for an excessively long time. When you do get through to someone, be sure to mention it. Maybe if there are enough complaints, they'll hire more people. With the job market like it is, that'd be a good thing.

Yeah, I made toast and had a second cup of coffee. Still, moving on until later in the day. Hate to waste a great morning on this.

Burning yard waste - check. Now for a shower and lunch and then off to Steve the Trainer's place to see if he has the harness stuff I need and see his critters.

It sounds like a fun and interesting afternoon, even if the morning was a drag.

I went to Penny today, but I didn't bring out the clippers. When I brought her into the barn, she was very jumpy, looking around for that sound. I decided she needed a rest, though I'm not sure if I should have just pushed through it. Anyway, she got a rest from the tension of having to hear the clippers. I groomed her -- she's really starting to shed -- and put her heavier blanket on her, since it's supposed to turn bitterly cold again.

On the way home, I delivered that picture of Maija to Deb. That picture has been hexed from the start. First, I was having trouble doing it, and then the picture frame broke, and when I went to Deb's and handed it in the door to her, she dropped it. Fortunately, I had it well padded and wrapped. At least it's gone from my house now. Whatever happens to it from now on is not my concern. I told Deb to be careful hanging it -- it's likely to go crashing to the floor -- and this was before she dropped it today!
