Speaking of projects, today, before tutoring, I returned the picture frame I had tried to put Maija in. Did I mention one of the things that you turn to hold the backing on broke off? They took it back with no questions asked and gave me another frame of the same kind, plus I bought 2 more, since that was the last frame. So now all I have to do is put Maija into the new frame and give the picture to Deb. Then, a new project. I may go back to trying to draw Gabe. He's a young horse, so dark brown that he might be considered black. I picked a rather difficult angle because he had a look of innocence that I associate with a youngster. I have an easier pose of him, but I didn't really like it as much. So this will be a challenge, and I'm sure all of you will see many versions of it before it's done.
One thing I noticed in some videos I watched was that they put the background in before the foreground stuff. i always put the background in last, so I don't smudge the background into the horse. But now I wonder if it should go in sooner. It's really difficult to get the background in around all the little details. Maybe it'd be easier if it went in under those details. Hmm …
Terry, how did you do the polar bear? Bear first and then background, or the other way around?
Sometimes I do the background first if there is going to be a lot of detail in it that would be hard to get around. In the Polar Bear pic I sketched in the skyline, then tree line, then snow line, then water line then iceberg line. I then did the sky and clouds then started on the polar bear. I didn't really get into much detail until after the bear was done or when I was waiting for Rave to get back to me.
With the Eagle I did the eagle first then the background. Hope that helps.
With your horses, I don't see how you could do the background first because the background isn't going to be the same color as the horse and not being familiar with pastels I would think it would be hard to get the horse the color you want drawing over the background color.
