Interesting. Just for the freebie SI photo, I vaped with my horse, and she paid no attention to it at all. We went out in the pasture to take the pictures, and we interrupted her grazing, so she was focused on getting back to munching grass, so I guess she was too distracted to notice that I was vaping. I don't usually smoke or vape at the barn, so this was something she's not used to, but I guess she figures humans do all sorts of weird things a horse can't explain, and this was just another one.

Wouldn't you just love to hear a conversation among our animals and their companions or am I the only one with a bizzare enough imagination to think of something like that. "Let me tell you what my human did yester......." "Yeah well Penny's human...."

My Mother is 73 and she has been smoking since she was a teen. Recently she had a stroke that had NOTHING to do with her smoking she had a congenital heart defect that was discovered when she stroked. It scared her so bad that she decided to ask her cardiologist about quitting. He suggested the e-cigs. It does help, she's not thrilled with them b/c of the "ritualistic addiction". She doesn't know how to be a non smoker either. In her younger years she was a heavy smoker like me,she started cutting back in her 50's and is a very light smoker. I admire both of you tremendously,if I had been smoking as long as you two have, shoot I doubt I would have even looked at an e-cig.

When I first tried ecigs in 2009 I had 510 minis with attys and cartridges. I only lasted a little over 2 months, though I didn't smoke at all during that time. Last May I decided to give it another try and got an eGo....better. Then I got a Volt kit.....BEST! I also found flavors that I like, which is just as important as the hardware.

I don't know if I've lasted a year now because of the satisfying pv or because I allow myself that "token" smoke....or maybe both. Somedays I skip the cig because I don't think about it. It's a concious thing, not due to any physical craving. I enjoy vaping and it takes away all the cravings. Maybe time will take away the ritual addiction.

Thank you for your input. The mind is complex, as is the interaction between the mind and the body. You've been very helpful and have given me something to think about.

Marlou, I trashed a 43 year 2 PAD habit using ecigs. It wasn't easy. I too wanted those last few nasties before going to bed.
Then I decided to see how long I could go without one. When the cravings came I used the ecig. I still had an analog before bed.
After a week of starting this regimen, I forgot to have a cigarette before going to bed. I had a few fallbacks but once I saw I could do it I felt good about accomplishing it. The desire for a cigarette disappeared totally.
As my sig shows, I'm 17 months tobacco free. I have to admit that about 2 months of using the ecig I decided to have a smoke just for old times sake. Well, talk about gagging a maggot (old navy expression), I took 2 hits and threw the damn thing away. NEVER AGAIN!

Hope this gives you some insight on how to let go. Good Luck.

Thank you for sharing your experience and for you support. I too forget to have a cigarette some days, which is a good indicator that I could do without them. I believe Raynes is right, that for me it's a ritualistic addiction, since I really don't feel any craving for them. Sounds crazy, huh? I probably shouldn't have used that word (crazy), but I've never been known for being PC.

My older horses could care less what I do as long as I'm not asking them to do anything unless I have a brush in my hand, the water hose or a feed bucket. The young ones are always curious.

I had to smile. You aren't the only one! I think this all the time. I often think they consider us pretty ugly, with our hairless body and big feet sticking out in front, not like dainty hooves. And we have absolutely no sense of smell and are fairly unconscious of what's around us. For instance, yesterday, I went on a trail ride with some others. When we leave the area where the pastures are, we cross a creek, and then we are in what horses consider AWAY FROM HOME. This makes it a bit more scary than being on their home territory. Since we were last across the creek, the phlox has come into bloom, and Penny was acting sort of spooky. I thought it was the different look the flowers gave the place. Horses don't take well to changes in the looks of what they are used to. So I was telling Penny it's just pretty flowers, when one of the dogs from the barn burst out of the bushes, and Penny jumped aside. She relaxed as soon as she saw it was one of the dogs, but it made me feel pretty foolish that I thought she was afraid of the flowers, when all along, she knew there was an animal in the bushes nearby. Horses must think we're pretty stupid, huh?

Since you are forgetting to have a cigarette some now,I tend to think that your well on your way to laying them down. Kind of like me having to pretend to light my e-cig at first to simulate smoking. All I know is there is more to smoking than just nicotine addiction. If that was the case then we could satisfy that craving with broccoli.Broccoli has nicotine in it and I've yet to hear of anyone being able to quit cigs by eating broccoli.

I'm not really sure I want to know what mine are thinking.Horses are a lot smarter than people give them credit. They are experts at reading our body language. I've noticed from working with mine that if I'm rushed for time and want to get some training in I might as well have stayed at the house b/c they aren't going to cooperate BUT when I go out there relaxed, like I have all the time in the world we accomplish a lot and enjoy our sessions. Just as we train horses they train us. One thing I learned early on is when I have a hold of their lead rope, they have a hold of me to.

Good points! When I first started, I would try to ash my PV, but it was not intentional. I still prefer to hold it like a cigarette, so I actually go for the small Volts with a carto in the evening when I'm relaxing. For me - it's all about the hand to mouth motion - the oral fixation. Dunno if I'll ever get past it, or if I'm even interested in trying. So far, it's done me no harm. On the contrary. Vaping seems to replace snacking for me. The hand to mouth is soothing and cathartic. This small corner of the vaping community has the same effect.

I wouldn't focus so much on the ritual addiction, for one I think it will make you more conscious of it,besides its just my theory nothing I can prove. I'm not an expert in the field of addictions by no means, this is just my second time to try to quit smoking.Actually I discovered the ritual aspect when I picked up my e-cig and felt something was lacking when I took that first inhale (I didn't light up) so that's when I got my lighter out.LOL . My co-workers thought I was crazy,I don't mind being crazy as long as it works for me,I'm past the age of worrying about what people think of me (what a relief):)

We humans need our rituals, lol. When I decided firmly to go into vaping/smoking full time, I decided to buy a pack of cigarettes too. I told myself that I could have one anytime I wanted it. The first few days I smoked a couple, then every week or two, I would smoke one. There is an old package of kools sitting on my desk...right in front of my monitor. It's been there for couple of months now, with one cigarette in there. Don't you know that thing is skanky now? lol But...it's there if I want it. LOLOL

I wouldn't consider one a day as being bad. My problem is it wouldn't stay at one for long and I'd be back up to two packs a day in less than a month. One a day probably makes you cough once or twice and helps clear you lungs. Yeah right Chuck, try to justify having one lol.

This. My SO's father and two of her sisters are all Respiratory Therapists (everyone in our family is medical except us lol). They've talked to me about multiple studies that show that less than 10 cigarettes a day do little enough damage that the lungs can clean and repair themselves overnight. However, at 10 a day you can't reverse any of the damage already done. One a day is something to be proud of. Anything less than where you were is a win. I'd do this myself, but like Wuz, 1 turns into 2 into 4 into back to PAD.

You're doing great, don't lose focus on your accomplishments.

Rave, you know Sigmund Freud did a lot of research on oral fixations, people thought he was nuts back then and some still do now,I think as former smokers we can relate to his theory. The oral fixation is a LOT of it--think about it,those that don't vape compensate with food, chewing gum or whatever. If there wasn't an oral fixation there then why do some former smokers get obese?
My MD one time got on me really hard about me giving up smoking,to the point I just couldn't keep my mouth shut. I said,"Look Doc,I've given up drinking, and I've given up sex,if I give up smoking I'd be a perfect person and the only perfect person I know of was Jesus Christ." His reply was,"Well you should start having a sex again" To that I shot back,"And risk getting AIDS?" (I hope that didn't offend anyone,it wasn't meant to be offensive)
Point is what is most important worrying about an oral fixation or feeling gratified by vaping where you don't want a cig?
