You all are so talented! I wish you could post some photos of the homes you've designed. I'd love to see them.
I like the idea of a home that's able to accommodate the elderly. If they are meant for that and aren't handicapped accessible, can you design them so they'd be easily converted? Someone who isn't handicapped at present may become more so as they age, and it would be good to be able to make changes that aren't very disruptive or expensive at a later time.
My mother and stepfather lived in a home my mother designed with the help of an architect from a rehabbed shell, and when she decided on its layout, she never considered herself getting old and disabled. Before she died, and now for my stepfather, the place is beloved, but it's a strategically difficult house for someone who doesn't get around so well. There are lots of stairs, and I guess that can't be helped, but it is a serious problem. They put in those lift chairs to get them up and down the stairs, then discovered that when they wanted to give away the piano on the 2nd floor, the lift chair would have to be removed for the piano to get out, which was more expensive removing it and then replacing it than it had cost to
buy and install. Go figure! I think more young people should think about their house and how it'll suit when they age, if they love where they live and don't want to move.
