Oops! I didn't realize I had posted that deer photo before. Sorry to repeat myself.

I doubt we have bobcats here. I never heard a scream like that at night. I did hear something weird about a month ago. I thought it was a coyote trying to kill my cat. The neighbor's dog was barking furiously. I went out in the dark with a flashlight, calling my cat and searching in the spot where the sound had seemed to come from. Nothing. My cat showed up the next morning with not a scratch on him. I have no idea what it was, but I think it could have been something killing something else. We have foxes around here, too. I spot them crossing the road while I'm driving every once in a while. Rabbits scream when they're in danger, but this was more a deeper growl kind of howl, like nothing I've ever heard or could identify. Who knows what it was.

As for the sound of screaming like a woman being killed, ever hear a peacock?

Oh yeah - Our neighbor a couple of ravines over had a peacock for awhile. Not a natural sound to hear out here. But then, neither are elk. I hear them bugling every fall because of the elk ranch that is close by.

It's okay that you posted it before. That was in the original mega-thread. Now, current people can enjoy it. :)

Around here, if animals act uncharacteristically, it scares me. We have rabies among wild animals. Raccoons are notorious, but a couple of years ago, a rabid fox bit a little girl's hand and wouldn't let go. He had to be shot to get the child free. This happened right in town, too, not out in the countryside somewhere. Wild animals are supposed to be afraid of people and run from them. If they don't, there's something wrong, whether it's disease or tourists. Those animals are the most unsafe.

Same thing with gators here. Before Florida became so populated and gators went on the endangered list for a while I used to swim in the Okalawaha river in the forest with them. If you started toward them they'd run. Then they started building houses on rivers, lakes and canals and people started thinking it was fun to feed them, until they didn't one day and the gator would swim off with their dog. Fish and Game would come move them to a national forest area. The first year they were chasing hunters up trees who couldn't shoot them without going to jail. Now they're getting bears in urban residential areas and freaking out.

Hey Volties!

In case you're interested, our own dlsw (Diana - a fellow Voltie)

has a thread in The Lounge for "Middle-Aged people 35-54". She's not real picky about the age group though. She lets me play there as do a couple of other "riper" individuals. C'mon and join us!

I still go swimming in Fisheating creek by labelle. I just ignore the gator usually , but it is so overpopulated with them now because you can't hunt them there.

Last time we were camping there though, one of them kept coming right to our campsite and wasn't afraid of us because some idiot was feeding him. He came up to our campsite every day at the same exact time for a week.

My mom keep getting black bears at her house in upstate ny. One even broke into her shed

I am shocked  My order was delivered today! That's the fastest I've ever gotten one, thanks!

Only bad thing is I got a gold battery when I ordered a copper one. :( But not worth the hassle of sending it back, and it's not an awful color (I do see a hint of green to it Rave). Came in a nifty little box this time... last time I got a battery it was in a plastic sleeve.

I wouldn't have gone swimming with alligators! It sounds too risky. But I guess you knew it was safe from experience.

As for bears, though I have never seen one hereabouts, I hear they are in the National Forest. I used to ride there a lot and never saw one. But a while ago, one wound up in the center of our town. I have no idea where he came from, since it's not adjacent to the national forest. Either he traveled for miles or else there are bears closer than that. The bear seemed to be a young one from reports I heard. I think he was probably Dumpster diving for food behind a local restaurant. However, that was an unusual case. I haven't heard of bears in town since then.

Wild alligators are more afraid of us and won't bother you so long as you don't bother them during feeding time (evening). The problem is idiots feed them and they lose their fear of us. That's where you have to be careful

I've been in the woods all my life Sandy. Back in my hunting days you never saw a bear. I'm not afraid of a wild gator or bear. It's the gators that have lost their fear and campground Yogi Bears that worry me.

What he said. Problem is you can't tell which are wild and which have been fed when you see them.
You can train gators to eat off your hand though...usually right up to the elbow.

Lol. Yeah, the only way to tell is the way the act, but that takes time. When you see a gator that comes to the same spot at the same time every day, you know. But just going out for the day, you will never know.

Its not like I swim when they are 10 feet away. I just swim in water where you know they are and can see them. If they get too close, we get out.

I'm more afraid of the water moccasins .

Bears on the other hand, I'm terrified of.

I just checked a while ago and surprise surprise. Mine is in Orlando and early. That usually means I'm gonna get it next day even though expected date is the 5th now.

I worry more about those animals walking the streets of Orlando than I do the ones in the woods.

Yep - The black bear sow that clawed me from the top of my head down into my forehead was in Yellowstone. Not fond of bears.
