I used to ride with a lady who had an Arabian/Quarter-horse cross (with a really, really full mane and tail). I was horrified to see her using WD-40 on her horses' mane/tail...she swore it was just a silicone spray and not much different from what was used in her hair salon. It worked well, and her animal seemed to suffer no ill effects; but I wouldn't have used it. Horses are supposed to smell like horses, for Gods' sake! ...and besides, my horse was an Appendix Quarter Horse, and I had no such problems taming his mane/tail...he had more of the Thoroughbred silkiness going on, so it was easy for me to be all morally superior, huh?
But, really, it seemed to work very well.
