Really, to me anyway, the biggest hazard is dropping one or otherwise breaking it. The vacuum is extremely high so when they shatter the glass, even the thick face glass, has a tendency to fly around like bullets. When I was in electronics school the most common way to sabotage a CRT was simply apply 110 volts to the heater which blew it out and made the tube useless. Since we were all paying for the privilege of being in class in the first place, anybody that did that, sabotaged/destroyed a CRT, equipment or project, didn't last very long. There were too many of us that were serious about learning.

We had a teacher who was sort of an idiot, why he was ever hired is beyond me. Anyhow, he ended up in charge of equipment maintenance. We filmed him "drop testing" oscilloscopes, VTVMs, signal generators, counters and power supplies off the roof. He found they survived falls off a work bench so he moved "up" to the roof. The administrators couldn't understand how the test equipment was getting damaged that badly, until we, a couple of the students, showed them the film. It was very frustrating to me as a student since he was destroying the equipment we needed to learn with. The temptation to "administer the beating" was very great, but I did and do value my freedom.

I don't know who supervised the kids in the day class, but I will tell you that the night class (adults) didn't like how our equipment was continually sabotaged.

I've seen a lot of test equipment banged around when I was in the Navy. I was amazed what it would go through and still keep ticking!

Just participated in my first CASAA online meeting. If you have a couple of hours every other Sunday, you should join (it's free) and listen in. Amazing what the folks across the pond are dealing with the EU trying to ban ecigs! Also, lots of good ideas have been presented on how we in the US can fight this battle.

I wish I could have a cat. Whisper is a feces eater at the dog park and I'm scared she'd dine in the catbox when I'm not looking. I don't want that mouth licking my face!!!

Yes, dogs think the kitty litter box is like the dessert bar at the casino. Disgusting!

Pet Update:

Remember when I told you guys we had adopted a new kitty? Cleo, our little girl. We had estimated her to be about 4 mo. old at the time.

Well, the other day Cleo wrapped her limbs around my arm. OMG - Poor thing has probably been having a gender identity crisis. Cleo is not a girl. Cleo is now Leo.

What a beautiful cat he is !! Does Leo have Maine .... in him?

yep  LOL!!....had dogs and cats together before...don't have a cat now because we have an expensive bird (previous cat knew not to eat family but I'm afraid a new cat wouldn't....so when previous cat died, that was it for awhile for having a cat....but I love cats and miss having one), but the point of the post is I always had to keep the litter box away from the dogs....they like to snack. (yuck) :(

Hi DW - I like birds. I used to have a blue and gold macaw. Also a cockatoo and a cockatiel. Also a toucanette. Birds are so interesting and a PITA. I loved them.

We have an African Grey. He talks alot. I've had cockatiels and a couple conures (they screech!). Birds are fun, but messy - oh, you're right - I just got that one....PITA for sure (had to think out the letters !
What's a toucanette. Never heard of that one.

With all the bird talk lately, here's another photo of birds, though not the kind most people would have as pets.

The day I went to Sapsucker Woods hoping to photograph some birds, there weren't many, but right at the end of my walk, I came upon a place where the creek widened out into a pond, and there, 2 Canada geese were carrying on what looked like a courtship dance. I stood watching their maneuvers and gestures, entranced.

Oh yeah, we had a small conure that would talk. I used to tell people DO NOT PICK UP THE BIRD! no matter how cute he is.

He'd say "I'm a pretty boy" and other cooing phrases. Then the moment someone reached over to pet him he would leap onto their arm, run up and start biting their neck. I don't know how many times I peeled that vicious bird off someone. He would bite me too while I was getting him off them and backto his cage.

A toucanette is a small toucan. They eat dogfood and fruit. He was so cute. He had such an attitude like "I'm a Tooke, tooke, tooke." He looked like a Z. He was 1/3 beak/ 1/3 body and 1/3 stiff tail. He couldn't fly very well so he would take off and then when he reached his branch, he would grab onto it with his feet and full speed. Bang and he would tip over and then recover and look like he had planned it that way all along.

African greys are amazing and super intelligent.
