Yeah, tell me about it. I had to take 4 years off to take care of my dad after his major heart attack, and can't seem to get a job now. Been trying for over a year.

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble finding a job. You aren't alone. My freelancing dried up about a year ago. I'll probably never know exactly why, though it must have something to do with the struggling economy. Finally, I decided to look for a job that was a lot lower-paying and in a totally different line of work. I found one in catering, and it was interesting to learn a whole new trade. Instead of sitting at my desk reading, I was lifting and standing and moving around a lot, which was good for my body. And doing something so different was stimulating, even if the salary hardly paid for the gas to get there. It kept me from feeling useless. Maybe you could try that tactic. If you got a job doing something different and didn't like it, you still could look for the kind of job you're trained for or take evening classes to train better for the job you really want. Another option is volunteering, which might add to your resume and lead to a job. You never know where the next opportunity may come from. I hope you find what you're looking for.

Volunteering can be an excellent way of showing that you get off your .... and like helping others. There are a number of people that have done that and it helped them get a job. At least you have something to put on your resume that is recent:) It could be once a week at the library reading or feeding the homeless once a week or almost anything.

Thanks for the coffee Awsum. 32 degrees out. Looks a bit cloudy. Have to go clean the house with the floors today. Miles and miles of bamboo and hardwood and vinyl and tile floors. I do feel somewhat rested up after taking yesterday off. Wish me luck:)

I was thinking of volunteering, since I think the catering is still too physically demanding for me. The local library needs people to straighten their bookshelves, and last year, I saw that a local stable had a therapeutic riding program. I didn't see it on their website this year, but I should call and see if they still have it. I volunteered for a therapeutic riding program out in California and then when I moved back east, down by Elmira, but the commute was too long. If this stable still has therapeutic riding, the commute would be doable, and I could walk to my local library. I'm thinking that either or both might give me a chance to see what I can do physically in a work situation, and usually, if you have limitations, they are willing to put up with it in a volunteer more than in a wage-earning job. I think I'll find that out today, in fact.

If you don't know what volunteer opportunities are out there, I'm sure a web search will turn some up. Volunteering for therapeutic riding was wonderful. I loved working with the kids. Cindy, I think you are in the SF Bay Area, right? If you want to work with horses and kids who are disabled, I recommend BOK Ranch. I don't know where they are based now, but most of the time I volunteered, they were at Hidden Villa in Los Altos Hills, which wasn't too far from where I lived in Redwood City. There was also a place in the East Bay somewhere. We took the kids and horses there for a horse show. There was also a program in Woodside somewhere. This was years ago, so I don't know what's going on out there now, but you could find out.

Here are your flowers for the day. These are phlox, which grows wild in profusion around here. I liked that these were backed by the trunk of a tree.

Still a long way from phlox this year, though. It's a little warmer than yesterday, though by no means does that mean it's warm. There are a few flakes of snow falling as I type, though earlier it was sunny, giving me the false impression that it might actually be a nice day. I have lots of errands to do and then I'm going to the barn to visit Penny. I did call about both volunteering possibilities. They sounded pleased at the library, and one of my errands is to pick up a volunteer form and fill it out and hand it in. I'll just pick up the form and bring it home to fill out rather than doing it there. The therapeutic riding is run by someone other than the barn owner at the stable where it takes place. I e-mailed the barn owner, who I know slightly, and she forwarded my e-mail to the appropriate people in charge of the therapeutic riding. So, off I go to take care of today's business.

There is no better place to eat the best one than Greece. Even if you find one outside the country that you like it i bet there is always someone here who makes it better.
Here you can have a regular one and maybe find one that will blow you away, even by thinking of it you drool. There is a guy who makes it on a city 100km away, sometimes i think i'll geta bus go there eat and get back.

Sitting down, facing forward.
Mrs. Awsum made the "great sacrifice" and left work early today so we could get the next tree down. It's now history, cut into logs, logs stacked and all the twigs raked up. Note the location of the shed and compost bin on the left and the deck and house on the right. You can see the tree fell almost directly on the guy rope, right where I wanted it. In fact it hit the stump of the first tree and bounced off of that. Also, you can see the huge pile of branches that need to be chipped, thankfully my next door neighbor has a commercial chipper!

Gyros sandwich.

Yum. I like them, but when I order, I get a souvlaki sandwich, which I like better. When I lived in NYC, just a couple blocks from my house was (maybe still is) a diner called The Grecian Corner, where we used to go for a quick, cheap brunch on weekends. I always got a souvlaki sandwich. My daughter lived in that neighborhood and carried on the tradition with her friends. She called it The Greasy Corner. It was a joke. Their food was actually pretty good, though other than some Greek specialties, it majored in hamburgers and French fries and stuff like that, which is probably why it got the nickname.

I know the feeling. I'm that way about Philadelphia steak sandwiches. There's a right way and a wrong way to do it, and even in Philly, they don't always do it right. There was a place in San Francisco, CA, on Columbus Ave., that had ones that were equal to the best you could get in Philly, though. The owners were Philadelphia transplants.

I had total faith in you. I knew you could do it. Hitting that stump of the first tree made me think of a lumberman's festival I attended many years ago. They had competitions to cut down trees. They weren't really trees but huge, tall, treelike logs set in the ground in a row that the competitors cut down with hatchets. There was a smallish peg set out where the "tree" would fall, and they aimed to hit it with the fallen tree. A lot of them did, too. So they had to be really accurate chopping down a tree to make it land within an inch or so of where they wanted it to. There were other things like a lecture on chain saw safety, and a guy who carved things like animals with a chain saw, but the chopping down trees and getting them to land on a peg driven into the ground was my favorite. Oh, yes. Lots of forestry machinery, like some sort of tractor that had such a high suspension that it could drive in the woods over stumps. Many people use horses for logging because it's hard to get machinery into a forest, but, unfortunately, there weren't horses at this festival.

awsum--Fantastic job! Mrs awsum is lucky to have such a capable partner, even if she did have to leave work early.
About the redwoods: I got to see Muir Woods once. Did you ever find yourself someplace and realized suddenly that you'd always dreamed of being in such a place, even though you hadn't known it till you were there? Yep. I didn't want to leave and couldn't figure out how to stay.
I have always, since I was a child in a very rural area, wanted to visit both Greece and Australia. And I mean a long visit, not just a week or so. Unfortunately for my dreams, I married very young, and have had to work for my living ever since.
Happy weekend, everyone!

Nice Storage Case

Someone posted this before and I just picked one up at Walmart in the health items section. It is a Medicine Case which fits the Vamo as welll as large 50 ML bottles of juice as well as several other X2s, cartos and tanks. Size is 7.5" X 8.25" X 2.25" high. It has elastic straps inside as well as a removable velcro zipper pouch good for drip tips, small cartos etc. For travel it seems great. The price is right $8.95 and it is sturdy with metal reinforcements.
