It's only 60 here today, cloudy and may rain later today but I'm going to go do some raking until it does rain, too much to rake and I didn't get any volunteers.

There's a goat farm not far from me and a couple of alpaca farms as well. One of the alpaca farms seems more like a couple of pet alpacas, or maybe they're llamas, while the other one has a mix of horses, goats, sheep and alpacas (or llamas). How do you tell the difference between an alpaca and a llama? They look very, very similar to me anyway.

One of these days, when it's a nice sunny day, I'll go out and get some photos.

Here's how to tell the difference. Interesting, because I never knew, either.

The weather here is blustery and started out overcast, but now there's sun. Tomorrow, we'll get thunderstorms, if the weather forecast can be believed. I have a physical therapy appointment this afternoon, and I was thinking of going to the library before that. I'll probably walk, in spite of the wind, since it's really not very cold out. It should get up near 60 today. I wish we'd have more days like yesterday, but of course a few in a row at this time of year isn't to be expected. And all you who have planted gardens, if you lived here, you couldn't trust it not to get down to freezing at night till the beginning of May.

Sandy, in that scene Charlie Sheen walks out of the office after the psychologist tell him to be careful and closes the door. In the hall a maintenance man has a light fixture removed from the ceiling and the wires are hanging down exposed. The view is from inside the office and through the frosted glass window Sheen is seen in an xray view doing the "funky chicken". When the psychologist opens the door to see what the commotion is, Sheen is standing there with his hair standing straight up and smoke is wafting all around him. Sorry, I have this thing for sight gags.

Thanks for asking, Lizzie. Bo seems like his old self today. I think the muscle relaxants are helping him tremendously. He's not limping at all and has no trouble getting up from lying down and is lying on his side again. He got three doses of the pills today, but given the advice of the vet and his improvement, we're going to cut that down to two doses tomorrow.

Leave it to Wabbit!

I asked about the rain tax because when I heard about it I really didn't believe the whole thing. Let's see...the problem is fertilizer getting into the waterways so let's tax the amount of rain that falls on any given piece of property based on how much roof or paving is present. Sounds logical to me, given the source. Then again maybe tax the fertilizer which is the actual culprit, nahhh, that makes too much sense. Given the constant search for new "revenue streams" I'm sure the idea will catch on, with gusto, here in the "great" Garden State.

Off to watch "Hot Shots: Part Deux" speaking of idiotic things, LOL!

When I heard about this it reminded me of the window tax in England. See Window tax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So, will people tear up the paving in their driveways and have them be like ours? We have dirt, and every so often, the landlord adds some stones to the driveway to fill potholes and stabilize the mud. If your house has a sidewalk out front, are you taxed for that? It does seem like a silly way to tax property.

Roland You Didn't Believe Me?

Would I lie to you? Governor O'Malley will tax anything that he can to boost revenue. We are still in a moderate recession and he got a 28 cent per gallon gasoline tax INCREASE approved. Maryland now has one of the highest gasoline taxes in the nation! He is forcing business out of Maryland at a rapid pace and citizens as well. I talked to my accountant and he redid my taxes as if I lived in Delaware and I would have saved over $20,000 in taxes over the last three years. NOW THAT IS WORTH MOVING FOR !

That kind of money is certainly worth moving for. I know you love your house, but you can love another one just as much, especially if you build it to suit yourselves. One thing to consider if you are designing a new house is to make it convenient for you as you get older and less able to get around. My mom and her husband designed a house many years ago and didn't figure what it would be like as they aged, and the stairs are a real problem. They got a seat that goes up and down them, sort of like an elevator, but now the piano on the 2nd floor, which they wanted to get rid of, can't be moved out because of the stairs apparatus. Stuff like that. This would be your chance to plan ahead. I think it would be an exciting project.

Coffee is on and there are bagels, oatmeal and cold cereal.

The rain tax, to me, is actually taxation without representation. It is being imposed as a result of an EPA regulation, a regulation created by bureaucrats, not elected officials. How it will actually do any good at all is questionable given how well tax money gets "spent". I have a favorite saying "Our tax dollars hardly work".

Taxes here in NJ are very high as well. Sometimes I wonder why we bought a house given that the tax rate just keeps going up and up no matter what the economy is doing or the value of homes is doing. We just had a re-assessment and I appealed the new numbers. I managed to actually get our tax rate down a few hundred bucks for the year, but I wonder how many people just went ahead and accepted what the assessors said and paid the higher tax bill. It was a little confusing, we went from some artificially low evaluation to "market" level evealuation, but given what has happened to real estate nationwide, they were very optimistic with their numbers.

Some years ago, my brother moved from New Jersey to Pennsylvania, partly because of the taxes.

Good morning and Happy Friday Volties and thanks for the coffee Awsum. I think I'll grab a bagel as well. :)

It's a dreary rainy morning and we may see a thunderstorm later today but at least it's warm so no complaints from me.

This is a good day to continue my spring cleaning so I'll be popping in throughout the day. ;)

Thanks for the coffee and bagels, Awsum.

It was 37 degrees overnight. It looks like our major cold snap of 26 degrees didn't do too much damage. Hard to say on the fruit production but since we have only gotten 5 apples in seven years, it doesn't worry me too much:) We almost always get some cherries although the trees are only now starting to mature. . Last year we got some grapes from one of our vines. Grapes take a while to mature into fruit producers, as well.

We had several pears on one of the pear trees last year and then a giant wind came through an blew them all off the tree. Maybe when the windbreak matures we'll get some pears. Growing stuff here is a Herculean task.

So, I'm thinking about getting another miniature horse as a friend to Wiseguy. SandySu - Would you want me to PM you one of my leads on a gelding? He's an appaloosa. He lives near a famous trainer who could train him for only $200 a month for board. I'm tempted but not ready to leap into it. The horse is about a 12 hour drive from here so Hubby and I would probably take a 3 day weekend to go meet the horse if I were to decide to buy. The breeder has some lovely horses and is friends with one of the really nice knowledgeable people on my mini horse board.

If you are into taking a 3-day weekend to go see the horse, by all means, do it. Especially if there are several horses at that farm or also in the area you could consider. Try to remain fussy about what you want and what you don't. Resist sales talk. See if you and the horse have a fairly good connection. What kind of training does the horse need before he's ready for you? Can you hire the famous trainer to go look at the horse and give you a professional opinion? Yes, PM me with info, and I'll do my best to give you feedback. Is there a YouTube video of the horse moving? That can tell you a lot, as well as conformation shots from all angles. I think the most important things to look for are fairly good basic conformation, so you don't run into lameness problems down the road, and a good, biddable personality so the horse isn't hard to handle. Remember that Appaloosas often wind up with trouble with their eyes, moon blindness, so you may want to consider that. Not to say that every Appaloosa goes blind, but it does seem to be more prevalent in that breed than in general, though every breed might be susceptible. I don't know why this is a predisposition in Appaloosas. Is it hereditary? Are there certain bloodlines more prone to it? Is it because of the unusual white sclera in an Appaloosa's eyes? I haven't studied the situation much, since it doesn't pertain to me, so you may want to do some research on it. One thing to be sure to do is, before buying the horse, if all else seems good to you, get a vet to do a prepurchase exam. Don't use the vet that the horse owner uses, since that would be a conflict of interest. Maybe the trainer could recommend someone to you.

That's very exciting that you are now thinking of getting another horse! I can't wait to see the details!
