My kids schools went to dress codes starting in 5th grade- my oldest was in 4th at the time, and I TRIED to fight it- but all the other sheeple were afraid to upset the school board- the next year he had to wear the uniform or 'standardized dress' as they call it.... - he was miserable. said he felt like he looked like Barney Fife... They had to wear kahki pants, green, white, black or grey polo shirts, and single color tennis shoes or dress shoes.
With Brett being the one who went, it wasnt too bad, BUT, I knew it would KILL Matt- he wears overalls, and his jeans tucked in his boots, and is sooo country. heck it was hard for Brett- we didnt even OWN a pair of kahki pants. seriously.
I knew it would KILL Rayley- she dresses like punky brewster on crack. Always wearing tights and hose that are bright and funky- with shorts, skirts, whatever- and has pink stripes in her hair- that she teases up in a 60's ish do- , and wears boots and shorts, and tutu's over her jeans, and ugg boots with sweat pants.
Our school cut out the colorful hose, and no jewerly, and no fun bows in their hair- NOTHING to make them look different or to be themselves, or feel like a normal person.
that was the straw that broke the camels back- I withdrew them and refuse to send them back. LOL
Good for you!! I hated uniforms. The lack of individuality in a private school is acceptable- you know when you sign up for a paid service, its part of the deal. But when you attend a public school, there is no acceptable reason to make kids into cookie cutter molds. As a teacher, I feel it sends children the wrong message "conform or you dont belong" as well as the whole "flock or herd mentality". If you want them all to act alike, look alike, and do what the other does, thats fine, but I want my children to THINK about what is presented to them. I want them to UNDERSTAND a concept, not memorize it and forget it. Its one thing to limit excessive or outrageous clothes/makeup/perfume etc... Its quite another thing to ban it. Town hall and PTA meeting here I come- My 5 yo starts her first day of school in just 2 weeks!
