Oh you'll get better at that, it takes a little practice to keep the same tension on the thread, try not to "tighten" up at the end of a row.
this is more like what I'm used to doing
I used to do hair wraps all the time back when they were popular. At one point I was doing 10-15 a day! I still give myself a special hair wrap every time a close friend passes away.

You start a new row in the stitch you ended the last row with, then add an extra stitch to the last row you end with, if needed.

You're probably dropping a stitch at the end. You have to DC in the chain from the previous row and then chain for the next row. It took me years to figure that out.
OK, I come back and there is a .... w/ balls make of yarn from Pamdane & Pchela is all about crotched scarfing or something.

SmartWool tube socks man. You can get some flannel lined jeans from Cabela's and strap that sucker right above your knee. I YouTubed it once but they took it down. Not sure why. -Magnus

Thanks for the suggestion, and I will keep it in mind. But I do prefer hand-crafted over mass-produced, so I will hold out for one of Lynlee's crotched scarves if it is at all possible.
And to Lynleestar: it doesn't have to be fully crotched, if that proves too difficult. I will settle for crotchety.
my mom attempted a 'cozy' for one of my mods and I can't tell you how we laughed like maniacs at the finished product! We offered it to my boyfriend who turned a shade of red I've never seen before
