But what if i hate it? Never been without Windows. Im a little skeered.

Then load windows on it. For the past 10 years or so Mac has just been a Dell painted white and pre-loaded with FreeBSD. When Apple switched over to Intel architecture there really is abnsolutely no difference except the design and price tag.

Saying "Mac is better" now is exactly the same as saying "HP is better"

At least when they were using the Motorola 68xxx processors there were actual functional differences...

A mac is not an hp! Okay. Those were my words.

edit - I'm tired and ready for bed...hence the slight lack of words.

I agree. If you read my post you'd see that I said a Mac is a Dell. HP's are ugly and clunky, Dells are sleek and smooth. And Macs are like Dells with a personal trainer.

;)

Try one first...I can not stand them. All the buttons will be in the wrong places and you won't be able to find anything (the same reason mac-ies dont like windows). In a year you might love it, but expect alot of frustration at first.

And i must really want you all to know ive never had a mac. Work with me here people. My computer is teh suk!

Seriously, dell's are sleek? not at all! GRRRR! Even absorbing alienware didn't help them. Curious as to what your opinion of the Pinto was when it came out...was it sleek as well?

Two different (and older) Dells:

Hmmm.... perhaps our definition of sleek differs. And Alienware had already commoditized and gone chunky before Dell bought them. All Dell did was turn Alienware into a "custom-cased" version of their XPS line.

Not sure what a Ford Pinto has to do with the conversation, but no, I did not think of the Pinto as sleek.

Is there a laptop you would call sleek, since super-thin with clean lines doesn't seem to cut it?

It depends on your requirements. I can say, for me, I switched to Mac OS X a couple years ago and I couldn't be happier. I do have Boot Camp and VM Ware with Windows 7 on my Mac Pro and Boot Camp with Parallels and Windows XP. I have the ability to use a MS product, but I almost never boot into the MS side or even into the VM. I use to build a new PC about every 6 months or clean my Windows system (fresh install or program/registry cleanup). Bottom line, I spend less time maintaining my computer since going Mac. I spend less down time due to disk defrag, installing updates, virus scanning, malware scanning, etc. As a support contractor (my old private business), I was fixing my customer's PCs constantly. Most of my family and clients went to Macs (part of the reason I decided to give it a shot) and my call volume and subsequently the client visits dropped off to next to nothing. It just works.

By comparison, my Macs spend more time up and they are just as fast as they were the day I bought them. No slowdowns due to program installation, no blue screens, little to no software/OS maintenance. I've heard the entire range of reasons why not to get a Mac, but all of those positions are flawed or rooted in old and outdated justifications. "You can't update the hardware because it's Apple proprietary", false. I have bought upgrades through Newegg and other sources, like RAM, hard drives, disk drives, graphics cards, etc. Side note: Don't by Apple RAM, get RAM from another source for pennies on the dollar compared to Apple RAM. "Apple has only one button on the mouse", false. Apple products haven't had a one button mouse for years. Some of the laptops did have a single button on them, but holding a Ctrl key and pressing the button is the same as a right click. The mice delivered with the units have two buttons on them and have been that way for years. "It's more expensive than a Dell/HP/Compaq/etc", true and false. While the initial purchase is a little more expensive, when you look at the package deal it's much cheaper and you get more for your dollar. I've done dozens of Cost-Benefit Analyses for people and you save in the long run. No additional programs/software to buy, the amount of powerful software that comes resident with the system is more than enough for most people and intuitive enough to use without reading a stack of manuals or going to classes for it. The level of support, either at an Apple store or over the phone, far exceeds anything you'll get from Microsoft.

Simply put, the synergy and forethought in the system become apparent after using a Mac. The combination of hardware and software working together is an accepted benefit. I was one of the biggest Windows fanboys for years and it took me a couple of weeks to get "comfortable" with the look and feel of the OS. After that, it's smooth sailing. The important thing to remember is the correlation between MS and OS X. You can do the same things, just some minor key changes. Instead of Ctrl+c/v/x it's +c/v/x to do the same thing.

Perhaps the judgement is across all product lines instead of a focus on one high end line. There is nothing sleek about this one (a current model). I would not say that they have never had a nice model, but judging the brand in general, they are not, imho anyway. I will concede that my example is the other end of the spectum.

I certainly would not say that teh desktop line is anything sleek at all. This image shows 2 current offerings, the brick and the half-brick.

I will agree with evaluation of the later alienware lines. This is certainly why, when I was finally able to afford one, that I never bought one. That and knowing I get close to the same performanve at thalf the price.

(sorry for the delay...commute):p

I would not say a Mac or PC is "Better". They both have benefits and drawbacks. Macs have less of an initial learning curve to do fun things but a pc will have better versatility. There are also alot of software dev limitations on a mac. All of the things Clay mentioned (about PC) I do not have as issues. Everything is automated or scripted. I have had one OS reinstall due to changing hardware in the last 3 years and the machine I built almost 3 years ago is nearly as fast as it was when I put it together.

Alot of those arguments (such as the "no upgrades") seem like someone who has not really taken a look for a few years. I applaud Apple for listening on those issues and correcting them. I will argue the "1 mouse button" case, as I see them arrive for our graphic designers (the only ones who use them here) with a single button mouse quite often.

It is just like selecting your PV, there is a good and bad to every one of them and alot of it is comfort level and asthetics. Eventually we will realize that it would be much smarter to go back to a command line OS on all machines (possibly linux for this?) with an "OS" (more of a gui really) put together by MS, Apple, HP, DELL. Sounding familiar? This is what Android was concepted to do (although not implemented as elegantly as it could be).

oh, and

GOOD MORNING PIF!

Good Morning everyone!!!
