The shutoff, on some units, takes multiple clicks to turn it on or off, to prevent accidental firing.

The timer shutoff, also on some, but not all, units, will automatically cut out after X seconds. Various vendors use different lengths of time, but typical is 8 or 10 seconds. If you release the button then press it again ir restarts the Tinner.

Either it will turn off/ turn on or have no effect. It may also activate the self destruct sequence. Be prepared to enter your starfleet identification code and abandon ship via the nearest escape pod.
