How hard was this Croak? Any install tips?
Dropped my clouper mini/k4 yesterday, stripped the 510 thread, now its loose & displays the infamous 'check atomizer'. Thinking of repairing it with the varitube.
It wasn't the easiest 510 transplant ever.
Had to remove everything from the housing, starting with using rubbing alcohol to loosen the hot glue. Snipped the 510 pos and neg, and the battery neg going to the tray because the negative contact is mounted to the body and I didn't want to rip it off, so I bent that tab out so the plastic tray could slide out.
I left the battery positive to the board in place, so that the board and battery sled came out as one unit, just one less thing to re-solder later.
Then had to finish punching out the old connector, and then enlarged the hole with a 3/8" drill bit. Didn't bother tapping it for threads, just used the 3/8", then widened it a bit more once it was through, so I could just drop the Varitube connector inside, snugly.
Once the 510 was in, discovered that there's little reinforcement bits on the top and bottom of the case, on the display side, that interfered with the nut that would screw on the Varitube 510 post. Had to Dremel the top one down almost flush.
Then I had to work around the post the top magnet is mounted on to get in to tighten everything. Then discovered that same nut would interfere with the battery sled and positive wire, so I had to Dremel the side of the 510 nut down a bit, and Dremel the sled to give the wire more room to run out since the nut was still in the way.
Then it was just a matter of putting the board and battery sled back in, bending the negative post back into shape, and soldering up the 510 and battery negative I clipped. Due to the tight clearances, I couldn't use the negative ring post that Varitube supplied, so I soldered the negative directly to the 510 nut, but wasn't happy with the connection, so ended up running a thick bead of solder between the chassis and the 510 nut, and the wire is in the middle of that bead.
Once it was up and running again, I took some hot glue and gooped back in basically the same places Cloupor did, to secure the board and wires from vibration.
Whole process took a couple hours. If I had to do it again, it'd take about half an hour.
