Been vaping for 4 years. Started on Kanthal and fairly recently graduated to 316L. Same thing with both. I NEVER burn out a coil in either material. They would last a year if I didnt get bored and just replaced them- because I think I should.
Usually, a dry burn and wash sees the coil almost as good as new (in my eyes) Maybe I am missing a vital symptom.

Would appreciate any thoughts as to when a new coil is actually needed.

A long as it's still intact and working properly, and not adversely affecting the taste, there really isn't much reason to change them. Wicking should be changed regularly, of course, and use that opportunity to inspect the coil, but you're taking good care of it anyways.

I'd agree. As long as everything is intact and not jumping ohms (I always test ohms after a wash and dry burn) then I just rewick and keep using it. When I used my Reo up until yesterday. I would have the same coils for 6 months unless I got bored. I feel though that the e-liquid you use plays a part. Unflavored never gunked a coil for me. Unlike how flavored e-liquid does.

That's the big difference with unflavored, the coils last forever. for me with DIY flavored juices I can get about 3 months out of a SS Clapton variant before it just won't clean up enough. Which is still fine with me.
