I hate to be the typical "new guy", but I've been browsing around the forum and I'm completely lost. I know there's a bunch of FAQ's out there that I probably missed but I was hoping to get some real-time advice from some active members. My dad is 56 years old and has smoked since he was a kid. He's been trying to quit all of his life. I'm looking to get him an e-cig starter kit for Christmas. What brand should I look into? I'm not really worried about price. He's one of those guys that is hesitant to try new technology. A couple of things:

I'd like the e-cig to resemble an actual cigarette. I know that may sound silly but it's what I'm looking for.
He smokes Marlboro Lights, so something that would taste similar to that.

Any advice would be appreciated.

First off, it would really help to know how much he smokes. The more details the better.

Ones that look like cigarettes have sub-par performance compared to the larger ones. You should look into something like an Ego Twist with a Vivi Nova. You'll want to get 2 Twists since you can't use it while it's charging.

You will not find any liquid that tastes like cigarettes. You can't really replicate the taste of burning tobacco and all the other chemicals that are in them. tobacco flavors are going to have more of smell/taste that is like unburned tobacco. Imagine the smell of a freshly opened pack of cigarettes.

If it were me I'd get a Variable Voltage battery lots on sale this time of year. Some kind of Clearomerizer. For Juice a varity pack diff flavors and get at least 16mg nicotine. At first he will likely want tobacco flavor but get something else so it will move him off tobacco thinking. I'd get something simple like a spinner or twist and Clearos. Cartos are a pain for new folks I still don't like them. Keep it as simple as possible. Make sure you get a starter kit as they will include chargers and sometimes juice. You want two batteries too. A lesson I learned the hard way. Welcome to ECF and good hunting.

Hi and welcome! You're going to get TONS of suggestions, all of them with the best intentions. Everyone has their personal preferences and don't like to see people spend money on the learning curves we went through.

I do not use a "cig-a-like," but that is what you asked about. At some point your dad may want to get deeper into the vaping hobby, but there is nothing wrong with starting small. The one I have seen recommended most often in that category is a Volt: Smokeless Image | The Best Electronic Cigarette

I also think the Ovale emini/Joyetech eroll looks interesting: Ovale emini/Joyetech eroll - YouTube

Kudos to you for wanting to give your dad the best present ever!

please refer to my blog with any questions. You can reach my blog by clicking my user name.
as said above, cig-alikes are OK for beginners, sure, but as soon as your dad realizes he can quit with vaping, he'll want a bigger battery mod such as an eGo kit, (which is a sharpie sized e-cig "mod") or an even bigger battery mod with removable, rechargeable batteries. (the word mod just means any e-cig that does not look like a cigarette) Many of us that have been vaping for a long time like to recommend skipping to an eGo kit, or all the way to a bigger battery mod because we have seen so many people move through the levels and end up wishing they had gone with where they end up 1st. Going from e-cig to eGo to big battery mod can be expensive, and our best intentions are to save you money and time by suggesting the larger mods.

with that said, the best cig-alike is the Volt, or the Bloog Max Fusion. Search them on Google for a kit. They'll cost around $40

make sure the kit comes with cartomizers or atomizers with cartridges and get him at least a few different flavors to try. vaping is different from smoking in that you aren't constrained to a tobacco flavor. The vapor juice can taste like anything, unadulterated. A chocolate chip cookie juice can taste like freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, for instance.

the best eGo is either a "vision spinner" or a "joye twist" if your father wants small, I recommend 400mah battery.
if your father would concider going with an eGo, you could also try getting him a mini ego. again, a mini is a 400mah, but it is even smaller than the spinner and the twist mentioned above because it does not have the section that allows you to control the power of the vape. so, an eGo 400mah and some cartos, a USB plug and AC to USB charger, and some juices would be nice too! Typically around $45-50 for two 400mah egos and it's kit, or, around $60 for everything in the twist/spinner kit.

For bigger battery mods, I recommend the bolt with one or two 18500 batteries, a battery charger, a "vivi nova tank", and some juice. The bolt with the 18500 battery will last your father all day, and perhaps into the morning hours of the next day. All of these can be found on the same site in most cases. Typically around $60 for everything here.

I hope you and your father enjoy the vape journey. :)

Gotta go with Smokeless Image....great starter kits at really good price points. They have the smaller cig-like ones, but they also have an "Ego type" (more the size of a cigar) that will be good for him if he wants something a little bit bigger later on. I got one for my Dad and he loves it! Smokeless Image really stands behind their products...the staff is so helpful, and amazing if you have any problems at all. I think he would like them a lot!

I think this is so nice of you to do! You want him to be around longer and feel better- vaping will help him do that!

The only reason I started vaping was because I was trying to help a family member who was a long time smoker (60 years) quit.

She insisted she wanted a pv that was more like a cig. I got her a KR808 kit. She only used it for maybe two weeks, which was OK because she fell in love with vaping. Some people are fine with this- maybe your DAD but she needed more and then she went to an ego type PV. She still sometimes uses the KR808 when she goes out to lunch with friends or something. I got her a huge variety of prefilled cartos.
Some of the suggestions in the thread like the KGO or Spinner or Bolt would probably be a better match for someone that's probably smoked for 40 years like your Dad probably has.

I think once someone tries a pv and realize they can quit cigarettes using it, they're more open to the possibility of trying different models, and doing a little fiddling. Really depends on the person.

OK, I'm your dad. (I'm your father, Luke) I'm 60, was a 40 year 2-3 pad smoker. I rarely carry my cell phone, I don't have a clue what blue tooth means, and my 3 year old granddaughter taught me how to skype. I also wanted a cig-sized, easy to use system. I bought a Volt starter kit from Smokeless Image and I will never regret it. Hope that helps.

Its' a personal preference thing, there is quite a few people out there happy with their 808 or 510 cig-a-likes. My dad also being one of them after I gave him my V2 kit. Just the other day I ordered him another $50 of juice and some nanomizers from volt per his request. He did admit that some day maybe he will join my brother and me with our "big bob marley j's" (yes insert Caddy Shack reference lol) but he is content for now.

I would recommend the Volt from Smokeless Image, also.

I've been cig-free for almost 18 months, and have all sorts of PV's, clearo's, cartos, tanks, etc...

Finally got my husband to quit, and with all the great stuff I have, what does he pick? A year-old 510 cig-style! He has absolutely no desire to even use an eGo size. He's 55, smoked for over 40 years, so close in age to your dad.

Just make sure you get at least 2 batteries, maybe one automatic, and one manual, the 78mm size lasts twice as long as the regular. My hubby is also liking the nano clearomizers, very easy to fill. And you can buy the e-liquid right on the site, so you don't have to order from different vendors, that'll come later :)
