Rep. Phil Riesen
stated in a
hearing
for a bill on e-cigarettes
, “I've been sitting here contemplating whether or not we should propose banning electronic cigarettes, and I'm hearing a
lot of testimony from folks who say that it's helping them stop smoking, and while I'm certainly
not an advocate of nicotine or nicotine addiction, if these things are actually being used to help
people quit smoking, I don't think we ought to ban them anymore than we should ban Nicorette or
patches or anything that is helping people to quit.”

During an online survey conducted in 2010, researchers polled visitors of websites and discussion forums dedicated to the use of the e-cigarette and smoking cessation. Of the 3,587 participants, 70% were former smokers, 61% were men, and the median age was 41 years. On average, participants used the e-cigarette for approximately 3 months, drew 120 puffs/day, and used 5 cartridges/day. Almost all of them used cartridges that contained nicotine. Ninety-six percent said that the e-cigarette helped them quit smoking, while 92% said that it made them smoke less. A majority of the participants said the e-cigarette helped them fight cravings, cope with withdrawal symptoms, and avoid relapsing on cigarettes.

[5.2] Does nicotine have any benefits? - Yes, it does.

For quite a few people, nicotine provides the benefits that some people get from caffeine or Ritalin: it helps them focus and be more productive, overcoming attention-deficit-type problems. For some people, nicotine provides relief from stress, anxiety, or panic. For people suffering from some severe mental illnesses, nicotine seems to provide great relief, which probably explains why a very large fraction of psychiatric patients smoke.

Myth : E-cigarettes are bad for you because nicotine is bad for you. Therefore, they are not much different than tobacco smoke.

Fact: This is just plain wrong. While nicotine is very addictive, studies have shown its effects on the body to be minimal. The problem with traditional cigarettes is the additives, smoke and chemicals, not so much the nicotine.

E-cigarette users can breathe a little easier today. A study just released by Professor Igor
Burstyn, Drexel University School of Public
Health, confirms that chemicals in electronic
cigarettes (e-cigarettes) pose no health concern
for users or bystanders. This is the first
definitive study of e-cigarette chemistry and
finds that there are no health concerns based
on generally accepted exposure limits.
