This is day 2 for me on PV. My experience has been amazing so far. As a traditional cig smoker, I got down to the point of only smoking when drinking or seriously stressed. So maybe 2 days a week at the most, (I called it binge smoking). Since I got my ecig, I notice I've been vaping waaay more often than I ever smoked. But like I told my DH, when he got his tobacco pipe he spent a week outside chain smoking... I'm playing with my new toy. And it's been awesome!
But now we're having some Friday night beers. And suddenly the urge to smoke a traditional cig is killing me! I keep taking drags off my ecig, (I'm chain vaping), but the desire to break down and smoke a traditional cig is crazy STRONG. Any tips, tricks, or experience with this?
My last day to traditionally smoke was 11-7, I'd really hate to go back to square one.
Thanks, ~missy~
You're doing great! Don't beat yourself up about cheating, it took me almost 2 years to get it right... but do think of all the money you will save being off the cancer sticks.
I'm not very far ahead of you... I started vaping Dec. 2009. It's been on again, off again for almost 2 years. I had a couple different motivators to get me to hang up the analogs for good this time (I Pray,) on September 1st of 2012.
Motivator #1.) The National Transportation Safety bill was signed by Congress. (... does this have to do with Smoking Kerri?) It ran the place that was selling me cartons of roll your own smokes for $32 bucks a piece, out of business by taxing them as manufacturers rather than a service provider or retailer. They slapped an additional $25 bucks a carton tax on them and all the RYO shops in my area went out of business. Damned shame too these were great people, just trying to make a living and the government gave them their tobacco retailers license and then pulled the rug out from under them 1 year later and long before they'd recouped their startup costs and 30k investment for a machine. (but I digress)
Motivator #2) I broke my right wrist in mid August and was told by the surgeon that put me back together again, (with the addition of a titanium plate and 7 screws,) that my bones won't heal well because I smoke.
Motivator #3) Potential savings of $800 + Dollars per month on ciggs alone. (My husband also quit at the same time.)
Motivator #4) Self employed Health Insurance is expensive $1350 a month for two, not-quite-50-year-old smokers. Rumor has it that if you're nicotine free for 1 year, rates will drop by almost 50% (this remains to be seen, but that plus the savings on smokes would pay for one hell of a vacation.)
Motivator #5) Health
How did I do this? I smoked about 2&1/2 packs a day but it was actually pretty easy this time. (I've quit before, but went back to it on a really bad day.) I stocked up on attys, DIY Liquid accessories and 3 months worth of nicotine patches.
I was a heavy enough smoker that I could vape while wearing a full strength patch, (without getting dizzy or worse.) I put on the patch and followed the basic instructions except that I vaped a bit when I had cravings: in the car, after meals, when angry, upset etc. (I can't drive a damned car without chain smoking on something.) I mixed my own e liquid to start at about 30-32 mg.
If you're supplementing your nicotine with another method, 16 mg might be fine for you, but it's obviously not enough on it's own.
(You may want to check with your doctor on this and make certain he/she thinks that it would be safe for you to use a patch or gum and vape at the same time.
One sneaky little trick I figured out with the patch: If you buy the right kind of patches, (Equate brand from walmart work fine and they're inexpensive,) you can "Step Down" by simply cutting the patch in half and then quarters or 1/3's. Why pay the same price for a patch with less nicotine? You do want to make certain that the patches you get are the ones where the nicotine is in the glue and not on a pad with the sticky stuff surrounding it. (Those style don't stick well if cut.)
The last thing I can suggest is Deep breathing exercises. Whenever I get really stressed or ticked off, I will do some deep breathing exercises. Take a 10 second inhale through your nose... Count to 10 in your head while inhaling, taking care to inflate your belly before you inflate your chest. (Pretend there's a valve on your belly button and the air is coming directly in from there.) Exhale through your mouth while also counting to 10. Try and make both the inhale and the exhale smooth, deep and long. Do this about 3 times and you can take on the world. It's about oxygenating your brain, changing your focus at the same time.
What ever you decide to do or method you choose,
NEVER GIVE UP QUITTING. You can do this and when you do reward yourself with something really special.
NIce to meet you...
Kerri (Adventure Dog)
