Desperately in need of suggestion

I used to e-smoke about 2 years ago, but after a while my atomizers both broke and I just started snussing instead of buying a new one. However, during that time my father (a 2 pack a day smoker) got mildly interested in e-smoking.

Flash forward 2 years, and my father goes to the doctor and finds out he has a fibrous growth in the upper part of his lungs. The docs say if he doesn't quit smoking now he will have COP soon, and emphysema in the near future. So, after about 50 years of smoking he is going to try to change to something else (quitting is never going to happen, TBH). He tried snus and it inflamed his gums and upset his stomach to the point where he can't keep going with it.

He has asked me to check up on the e-cigs again, but I have been away from it for so long I don't know what would be best for him. I have kind of put together a list of attributes that the best possible e-cig would have (in no particular order):

1. Lasts as long as possible on 1 refill. He would be using it at work and just can't be pulling it out and dripping juice into the filter all the time.

2. batteries that can withstand hard vaping at least for an 8 - 9 hour work day. And if none really can, then one that has batteries cheap enough to carry a few sets with him.

3. Dependability, because he is not looking at this as a hobby like most people here do. I would likely be doing most of the up-keep to it, he would probably never drip the atomizer, or try to do anything else to it for performance gains. I would likely just clean it for him to keep it running. So an e-cig that works great, but is high-maintenance is out.

4. Good vapor production, but honestly, dependable and easy to work with are higher on my list. Fiddling with it and frustration will likely make him quit long before smaller plumes of vapor would.

Thank you very much for reading! I am desperate to try to get him away from the cancer sticks, and I think e-cigs may be the only way. I can only assume e-cigs have come a long way since I got mine nearly 2 years ago, but if they are still in the same state as back then, it is likely going to be too much maintenance and fiddling for him to stick with it. I am crossing my fingers that there is one that could fit the bill here! Thank you for your help!

Agree with the eGo type to start with

1) it's a REALLY good device - battery does last 8-9 hours for me (if he's a vapor train he might need 2 but most kits come with 2)
2) Not a terribly expensive device to start with (more so if you can catch a good sale or don't mind trying a knock off in the beginning)

if he really enjoys vaping - some of the 3.7 volt mods can be had for $40ish dollars - batteries aren't horribly expensive and they will most certainly last a full day (so he could always upgrade in the future :) )

Cartomizers are much easier to deal with on the go - you can sit and fill a handful of them at home and you are set for the day easily (and when they don't work anymore, you toss em and get new)

Although I am new to vaping, I can relay my experience with the Vapor King from Vapor 4 Life. I purchased the kit with 2 batteries, charging case and carry case. I was a pack a day smoker and these batteries are lasting me about a day and half each. Charge time on the battery is about 3 hours, and depending on the kit you get you can use either the wall charger or usb charger. If ease of use is what you are looking for, you can purchase prefilled cartomizers ( the cartridge and atomizer in one piece) which is a disposable unit. My experience has been that each carto lasts me almost as long as a pack did, but your use may vary. Once done, you can refill, or toss and screw a new one onto the battery.

Again, I haven't been doing this long, but so far I enjoy my VK.

Hope this helps.

The ego is what I recommend to anyone at work wanting to try ecigs. That plus a few cartos, and decent liquids, is a really good starting point. Most kits come with two batteries, a charger, and one atty, and 5 prefilled carts. I absolutely despise carts. I've never gotten one to work right no matter what. Cartos on the other hand are almost dummy proof. You fill it, shake it around to spread out the liquid, screw it on, and it lasts me at least until afternoon or early evening. Plus you can carry cartos already filled with whatever you want, and just swap them out when they start getting dry. Refilling is quick and easy, especially if you just fill one of the rubber caps and push the carto into it, takes about 30 seconds. Plus cartos are dirt cheap, about $8 for 5 empty. One ego battery would last me all day, if not 2 days depending on how heavy I went on it. I have since moved on to mods, but I really think the ego type ecigs and some cartomizers are a beginners best place to start. If I had known what I know now, I would have started with an ego kit instead of a regular 510 kit (would have saved me $40). Regular 510 batteries only lasted me an hour or two.

The eGo seems to be getting a lot of praise here. I pulled it up on the Janty site, and it is not too bad money-wise.

Cartridges (and the fiddling with them) were one of the things that I feel made vaping so "high-maintenance" for me before. Like you, Blackjack, I could never gets carts to work right. I eventually just had to drip an empty cart every time I wanted to use it, and that would just not work for my dad. The rest of my e-cigging was not that painful or frustrating as my cart problems (I also had a 510; I had to hear it to remember what I had).

Can you, or someone else, tell me a bit more about cartomizers, or point me to a page about them? I saw the word on a retailer's site, but thought it was just a techy-sounding word for cartridges. So these are like a cartridge and an atomizer in one? I saw Janty sells empty ones for the eGo, but they also sell pre-filled ones. This may be the answer I am looking for. Thanks everyone!

Cartomizers - they are an atty cartridge combo - the filler sort of surrounds the coil. There are two methods to filling - if they have a soft cap - you can pop that off and see right inside to get the filling nice and wet. if they have a hard cap (or you just prefer the method) you can use what is 'lovingly' referred to as the Condom Method - you put some juice in the rubber cover and slowly push the carto threads into it (I had to look on you-tube and watch a video to truly understand what people were talking about)

They stay wet a LOT longer and produce a much better vapor

Everyone's mileage varies but I personally don't like the prefilled (cause they just taste horrible to me)

Cartomizers are a cartridge and an atomizer in one piece. They are meant to be disposable, but they can be refilled many times. The eGo cartomizers hold 2ml of liquid. Depending how heavily your father vapes, he shouldn't need more than 2 or 3 a day. All you'd have to do is fill them up for him and send him on his way.

For reference, I go through 2-5ml a day dripping and I'm a pretty heavy vaper.

ego cartos i believe you need a needle to refill just a lil fyi

I have one suggestion to keep in mind. Get a manual battery for him to try. I have emphysema and hence less lung abilities. I cannot breathe in long enough or deep enough for the auto batteries to give me a good vape. I was really dissapointed and almost gave up. Then I got a manual battery and I have not smoked since then. I get good vaper and a good throat hit.

Thanks everybody! I am going to talk to my father about getting a Janty eGo, a liquid sampler to try to find something he likes, and some cartomizers. Thanks again! :)

EDIT: D'oh! Didn't see the thread had gone to 2 pages.

@Willbeein:

It looked from the eGo reviews on YouTube that it has a manual switch. Can someone confirm if that was a mod? This was supposedly out of the box.

@Boston_Joe: Thanks for the heads up! I actually have a refill syringe that came with my 510 kit oddly enough! I am glad I held on to it now.

@Johnnybgdg:

What is an Ego "LR Atty"? I know the "atomizer" part, but unsure of what the LR is. Sorry, but I am basically a newbie with all of this stuff again!

I don't know much about the ego since I'm rather new to this myself, but a unit I've been checking into getting is the elegant. It's a KR808 model with a design that resembles the ego. Very simple to use...screw on a cartomizer and you're set to go. And the best part is the battery is supposed to last a very long time as compared to other KR8 models; I've read one or two posts on here where it was said to have lasted 12 hours before needing recharged. Just another option.......

Best wishes to both you and your father!

Yes, the eGo has a manual switch. There are automatic batteries out there, but the starter kits all have manual batteries.

LR stands for low resistance. LR atomizers allow you vape at a higher wattage. Higher watts means more and hotter vapor. Different juices taste better at different wattages. For example, in my opinion, sweet juices taste better at low wattage and chocolately juices taste better at a higher wattage. I wrote a bit about the technical aspect behind LR attys here.

Thanks for the info on the LR and the switch on the eGo.

@Johnny:

What Marlboro juice do you use, and does it taste even remotely like an analog? That is what my dad smokes, and if it even tastes 10% like the taste you get in the back of your throat from them (I know the vapor will be totally different), I think that would help him stick with it. I definitely would not get him anything fruit, drink, or candy tasting lol.

I bought several batteries and a pass-through from Vapor4life. I also bought blank cartomizers - the premium ones cost about $9 for a pack of five. I clean them out and reuse them. I haven't tried that many different flavors, but I like the high-test nicotine (36mg) and I have found that the Cuban Cigar flavor works pretty well for me.

The pass-through produces a richer, stronger vapor. It plugs into a USB port, and you can get a 12v cigarette lighter plug USB adapter for about $10 from this same vendor.

I sit at my computer and work this thing all day, and I don't go through much liquid. A bottle lasts me more than a week. I haven't tried that many different setups, but I'm totally satisfied.
