Holy CRAP!! Thank god you're okay. I hope you don't go blind, too. *knock on wood. Damn, I wonder why it exploded? You must not have been using protected batteries, am I right? Still, even if they weren't protected there's a minimal chance that they would have vented/exploded. Weird. Keep us all updated on how Jay/GLV handles the situation and your potential blindness please!

Edit: nevermind, saw that they are in fact unprotected. But honestly, like others have said- pretty much every vendor on ECF that sells mods offers a wide range of compatible and protected batteries that you could have ordered from. While it's not your fault that this happened, you really should have done more research considering the GLV is NOT a beginner device. I would think someone purchasing a more advanced device would know these things. Sorry dude, I'm really not bashing you, honestly. Oh well though, hopefully you can use this as a learning experience and you can get the GLV replaced. Peace.

well damn.. i had no idea i was purchasing a "more advanced device".

I did research about this product and a few others.. and from what I read, i was ready to move on.

I don't have the time to read every post on a particular thread, nor should have to.. I am willing to read up on things to get the required information.. but NO WHERE on his website or in the package did it mention anything about getting the right type of batteries, if the ones that were ordered don't work,.. or in my case, didn't arrive.. ( or send me a reply after asking).. I have heard of CR123's,.. but I don't know anything beyond disposable/rechargeable... and I would bet that is the case with most people.

I don't drink bleach... not because it says I shouldn't on a WEBSITE, but because it says "may be harmful or fatal if swallowed" ON THE BOTTLE.. you know what I mean?

You seem to be placing blame on others, when it was your fault for not educating yourself. Sorry, but that's the truth. You do have to read everything. that's why it is an advanced device. Once you step up to these type of batteries you do have to know what you are dealing with.

Hey Grey,

You probably have a point about the website needing to list this info. However, try to remember that we are all enthusiasts and some of these guys have personal as well as customer relationship with Jay. I too am a customer.

They are just defending a friend. And that's normal.

I am sorry for the problem you had.

If I sell you my car.. shouldn't I tell you that that it needs a certain type of gas, or coolant? granted it's your "fault" for not reading up on it.. but come on man..

No I would not tell you what kind of gas it uses. It would be in the manual, and if it didn't have a manual... then google. You knew hat kind of batteries it took, because you bought them... but you didn't get protected batts. Every vendor that sells batts only have protective batts.

Count your blessings and chalk it up as a scary learning experience.

I personally do not think it's GLV's fault. The only thing they should've done was let you know the batts were on back order.

I don't blame you....

I like un-protected batteries, BUT I buy un-protected batteries that can handle the load.

A lot of rechargeable batteries are border line with safty on load. I ONLY recommend batteries that can really dish out amps. AW makes a lifepo4 that can put out a ton of amps in CR123. Limn batteries also put out a huge amp rate.

If anything went wrong...the spring would melt.

I also like NON-RECHARGEABLE surefire batteries for 6v vapping, and is really the only batteries I have used for 6v in the last half year almost. They last a long time, and you can get a nice pack cheap on their website....No worries of the top battery trying to charge the bottom battery boom boom......

I do agree w/ that analogy. If you buy a diesel unknowingly, and think "oh, I better fill the GAS tank(with gas)", bye bye motor. I actually have seen that at a ford dealership, but the difference is the buyer KNEW it needed diesel fuel and he stupidly put super unleaded in it. He was yelling and screaming at the service manager that his 60K$ truck blew the motor on the first day. Untill the service manager asked "well, have you filled the tank? What kind of fuel did you put in it? What grade diesel?". The Truck owners face went absolutely PALE. Then bright red, then he asks sheepishly "OK. How much is this gonna cost me to fix?". In that case it was completely the buyers fault. He knew he bought a diesel, and he put gas in it stupidly. It appears the web site you bought from ASSUMES that you have done enough research to safely operate the device, yet he did not provide the proper batts. With a danger such as this, "do not use unprotected batteris" should be on every PV product page. How difficult could that be? I sum this up as a motorcycle dealership selling a Hyabusa to a 16YO kid, without asking if he has ridden a motorcycle and letting him ride off the lot w/out a helmet. Except, that a helmet and knowing how to ride are far more obvious than the unmentioned need for protected batts. No seller should sell a device that is so dangerous w/ the wrong batts w/out making the requirements of the batts OBVIOUS on the web site. Even more so his fault because he did not provide the batts that were supposed to be included. I would think that a warning pamplet shipped w. the product would be an easy fix too. I have heard of other times when similar problems w/ this supplier have happened. I think you have minimal responsability here. I think the supplier should accept responsability.

So glad you are okay. I did a lot of reading about batteries before I bought a high volt mod because I read about freak explosions and that scared me.I know some mods have built in protection, but I would never think about using an unprotected battery no matter how anxious I might be to try a new mod. I even take mine to the battery shop to make sure they are protected because packages can be mislabeled and I want to make sure they are vented correctly, better safe than sorry.

I knew what kind of batteries it took because of the charger that was sent with it.. the manual said cr123. nothing about protected/unprotected.

What would make him google "should I use unprotected batteries in my glv2" ? Really don't see how you guys are bashing him..

It's only cause the vets have seen this issue many times now.....Some forget not everyone is all hardcore about PVs......

One reason the GG now has a fuse you can insert in it.....

Not bashing him. I know he is upset and had the stuffing scared out of him. I just don't believe GLV is to blame for his ignorance. And by Ignorance i just mean by not reading or asking questions. I'm by no means saying the OP is stupid.

For a battery to explode like that there are certain requirements or conditions.
1. an internal short inside the battery can cause outgassing ( that is what it is actually )
2. and external short ( dead short ) across the battery , this can be caused by the device OR the atty

protected batteries for obvious reasons are a better way to go for unprotected devices

for some really good info on batteries I.E. Lithium Ion types go to Welcome to Battery University

There are more conditions than that-

Full discharge is the most likely in this situation. Part of what a protection circuit does is prevent full discharge which puts the cells in an unstable state- then after you charge if they don;t blow, you draw high current, and *boom*.

Where is the ignorance? If I told someone to start vapping, and I said the GLV is teh 32%@#%.....Go here, and order...no batteries came in for them...I'm 99% sure they would just drive downtown and pick some batteries up. Really so if it only said you need this type of size. No wording of what kind of C rate does the battery need, and or what kind of protection does it need.

There should be NO need to research something that cost as much as it does. It's simple...The site should say we trust these kind of batteries, and non of the others in our mods. Doing so could jack up your face........
