I think there is a difference between being pretentious and being articulate

Up where I live swearing is more a part of our accent then it is related to emotion or a loss for words

It's more similar to Canadians saying "aye"
Or Valley girls saying "like"

For example instead of saying
"that's crazy"

I might say
"that's fuken preposterous"

I LOVE to swear, but feel like a kid when made to use *** and other such nonsence in place of certain vowels, so because I am not allowed to curse properly because of the children who find it offensive, I refuse to give them the satisfaction of making me look like an idiot!

I try not to swear, but do when I'm tired or stressed. IMO, everyday mainstream language is far coarser today than it was, say, forty years ago. (Just look at TV and movies.) I think it's because of the more rapid pace of life these days.

You folks from the Commonwealth countries still speak the best English--don't be corrupted by us Americans!

Indeed, I use verbal profanity to weave a colorful tapestry of epithets in my most earnest efforts to convey my utter and complete derision for those who earn my wrath.

I rarely type profanity unless I'm documenting said conversation with same (usually for Human Resources).

I work in technology, and "WTF" (the acronym, not the full phrase) has become so ubiquitous it doesn't even raise eyebrows. I've said it to CEOs and during meetings without being reprimanded. I have actually started spelling it out with the phoenetic alphabet, making the entire expression "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot". You should try muttering that under your breath sometime while pondering the imponderable. It's extremely satisfying
