Do you just vape in establishments, or ask first?

I don't vape in places where smoking is not allowed with the exception of bars if they openly allow vaping. Even then if I am sitting next to someone, I ask them if they mind. I feel its the courteous way to approach it. If I am trapped in a movie theater I will stealth vape if there are not people around me. There are still some unanswered issues regarding the possibility of certain pathogens (cold and flu virus, infectious bacteria, strep throat, etc) hanging on particles of exhaled vapor. It is known that these pathogens suspend on water particles when you sneeze. For this reason alone I don't think vaping should be allowed in restaurants. Call me a germaphobe, but the thought of someone's exhaled vapor plume settling on my food as the waitress carries it across the room is kind of gross .....;-)~

Until we know a little more, I like to act with some restraint and courtesy.

Here ecigs are largely unknown. I vape inside in places I'm known, they know it's not a cigarette. At the casino I go to the smokers area. Lately I've been vaping in the mall, openly putting my evic on the table. Nobody complains, they realize it's nothing like a cigarette.

One day I had a cigar smoker complaining about HHV Pirate's Booty's smell

Great input everyone. I pretty much figured it was best to ask first and not take any risks or chances. What I find a bit strange is that some have mentioned here and other posts, they vape in doctors offices and hospitals, yet, most restaurants you cant. You would seem hospitals and doctors offices would be the LAST place you could vape considering how sterile they are.

I have vaped in both doctor's offices, in the examining room and in hospitals. My doctor is now a big proponent of vaping and recommends it to his patients who smoke, since I gave him information from CASAA and demonstrated it to him.

One of my daughters is an RN and her hospital encourages their patients who smoke and will be in the hospital for overnight or longer to take up vaping. PG is used in some hospitals ventilation systems as anti-bacterial agent.

Since hospitals use PG as an anti-bacterial agent in their ventilation systems, your fears seem irrational. Since a multitude of doctors (MD's) and Phd's in Public Health see no harm in exhaled vapor, why are we, who are non-educated in this field, believing we know more than they do.

I do find it humorous that some view stealth vaping as some form of cowardice....

I understand it and there are times (a few) where it might be the best course of action. In general, though, the more open we are about vaping (in a respectful way) the more acceptance and understanding we can garner for vaping as a safe alternative to smoking. If we always hide it or hang with smokers only we just feed the perception that it's just the same as smoking.

General rule of thumb: If I wouldn't smoke somewhere I'm not vaping there either.

There have been some exceptions. For example, this past week I was helping a client move from one office location to another. I was in a large room by myself packing up 8 computers and decided to have a vape or two instead of going outside. A minute later someone walked in and was wondering why she smelled chocolate (I was vaping a chocolate mint juice). Also, my wife (never smoked, doesn't vape) comments that she knows what I'm vaping because she can smell it, especially in my office. So, this all tells me the vapor can linger and possibly offend other people. That's not what I'm about. I started vaping to help me get off analogs. It's my cross to bear and it shouldn't affect anyone else.

I'm no vaping crusader or anything like that. I've had a few people ask what I'm "smoking," and I've told them.

That said, I don't vape anywhere where it's inappropriate to smoke. By inappropriate I don't mean illegal. I go outside when I'm at a restaurant, store, mall, etc. If I know I'm trapped indoors for hours on end, I'll do it in the bathroom. I just don't want the attention and/or arguement.

I was at my niece's little league game last week. There's a designated smoking area, yet I wouldn't vape there or anywhere else in view. I've never smoked in front of family kids, so I'll never vape in front of them either. I also won't openly vape at kids' parks, school grounds, etc. Maybe I'm too uptight, I don't know.

I haven't been to bars in a few years, having a 2 year old and a 2 month old has turned me into an old man. But a few friends today told me a lot of people vape in the bars/clubs. I was at an old friend's house for a few drinks, and everyone but him asked what my Halo Triton was. He knew what it was because he was in Knoxville for 2 weeks with work and he said everyone was constantly vaping; first time he's seen anyone up here using anything other than a disposable.

Vaping in NY isn't what it seems to be down south.

There's a time and place for everything. If people need to crusade for vaping anywhere they want, that's their business. I generally don't vape where I couldn't smoke.

Yeah, the crusaders who feel it is their 'right' to vape anywhere and everywhere are the ones who will promulgate bans. I was never so desperate when I smoked that I had to light up a cigarette where smoking was not allowed- movie theater, shopping mall, grocery store. Don't see why vaping would be any different. There is always a chance someone will be 'bothered.'

I hear you,,,,,my husband is extremely thoughtful of my vaping,,,,,he gracioiusly allows me to vape in our home, our bedroom, his car,,,,,,but there's one flavor he can't STAND the smell of,,,,,,,,and that's pineapple. I don't know why, I can't smell a thing,,,,,,,but he can smell it, and it bothers him,,,,,,,so I never vape that inside,,,,,,

that said,,,,,,,maybe peach will bother the sick woman sitting next to me at the doctor's,,,,,,,

or maybe blueberry might bother the woman sitting at the table next to me in the restaurant,,,,,,

They are more and more members on here who have no clue what is the driving force behind bans and severe restrictions on vaping and what isn't. It definitely isn't vaping openly but respectfully.

It is important for the vaping community as a whole for everyone to educate themselves on the who is behind the drive to have vapiing banned/restricted and what their motivation is. It has nothing to do with how people vape. Pretending it does helps no one. And please lets not use the .001% who are idiots and would vape in a church service as an example.

I didn't need to light up a smoke while shopping groceries. Nor do I need to vape while doing so. At work I vaped with my boss' blessing.

Sometimes I feel that the need to vape indoors, everywhere, stem more from some peoples territorial needs than nicotine cravings.

If I was at a restaurant, really craving some nico, I'd ask... but most likely just take it outside or on my way home. Cravings are not as bad as with ciggies. Smoking or vaping or generally anything that produce lots of smell is something I rather not do around people enjoying a meal.

I am new to the vaping world and love this site. Lots of cool and helpful members! I have read other posts about specific places people vape and all that, but am wondering -- do you just vape inside a bar, restaurant, store, work, etc without asking? Or do you always ask if it's permitted first?

I remember when I first started smoking, in the 80's, you could literally smoke a cigarette anywhere inside. You could walk into 7-11 or grocery store, etc with a lit cigarette AND when you were done, you could stomp it out on the tile floor. That was the norm back then, it was typical. Can you imagine doing that today? LOL

But I should get my first e-cig (eGo/CE4 blister pack) today and will be going to dinner with family tomorrow. Wondered if I should just vape while in the restaurant, or should I ask first? They do have a smoking patio but wondered if I should just vape at my table without asking?

How many of you actually vape inside somewhere without asking first, is that frowned upon or is it risky? I can only imagine if you just vape at a table in a restaurant or inside a store, everyone's initial reaction would be "omg he's smoking in here", not realizing its vapor and not cigarette smoke.

Thank you.

I don't vape in establishments, nor do I ask. I get ENOUGH weird looks from rude people while I'm driving, or walking on the street. I don't need any more hate/harassment in my life.

I don't do Either. I don't use an e-Cigarette in Non-Smoking Areas.

I didn't have a Problem not Smoking in Restaurants, Grocery Stores, Work, Hospitals, etc. The same goes for using an e-Cigarette.

I'm with you.

The public right now just isn't educated enough to even make a real decision on whether or not they want vaping in their establishment....or if they want a person near them vaping.

I DO respect those who are actively trying to work towards educating the public, in whatever way fits them.....so long as they do it respectfully.

Personally, I only vape in places where I would have smoked in the past. As the poster above me stated, when I was a smoker, I learned from habit where to smoke and where not to. That habit is still with me, so it isn't even something I think about. I automatically vape in places where smoking is allowed, and DONT vape where smoking isn't. It works just fine for me. :D
