Is that one of those fake cigarettes? Does it work??

This is the question I keep getting asked.I don't know why, but it annoys me. Yes it works, I press the button and suck, and vapor comes out. If it didn't work it would be broken.

Now, I know what they mean when they ask the question, but they just don't get it. Work for what? I use my PV because I like to. Not because I have to. Yes, I may still be addicted to nicotine, but who says that cigarettes are the only way to get it? Yes, it works. It is a nicotine vapor. It tastes good and it is enjoyable. I can go long periods without it if needed, and I don't have a "nic fit" like I did with smoking.

And, it is not a "fake cigarette", it is a real PV. I have grown to dislike people associating it with a cigarette. They don't call cigars "one of those fat cigarettes" do they? cigarettes, pipes, cigars, PV's...all completely different things.

No, it is not one of those "fake cigarettes" and yes it works, it does exactly what I need it to do, thank you.:vapor:

It's true: people seem to have trouble wrapping their heads around the distinction between smoking and vaping. Personally, I kind of like telling people about it...it makes me seem even more eccentric. Also, since it doesn't smell bad, most people don't mind. A lot of people -- smokers, x-smokers, and non-smokers alike--have requested to try it. The anecdotal data I have gathered is: smokers either think its legitimate or not as good as a cigarette; x-smokers immediately ponder if they should pick up the habit again but in vaping form; and non-smokers tend to think it is either gross or unnecessary. I would love to conduct a study and see if I could correlate people's reaction to their smoking or non-smoking status.

They want to know "Does it work as an alternative to cigarettes?" And it does, imo.

The "I know somebody who..." line is one I encountered for the first time last week, relating to vaping. But as a long time vegetarian, I'm familiar with the line, and the logic behind it.

Most people who smoke are justifying themselves. (As are meat eaters who feel the need to make these comments to veggies.) They mean "I know somebody who...did some idiotic thing, and it proves that what you're doing is just as bad."

It's 5-year-old logic, of course. But you can see where they're coming from.

Ande

PS- I call it an electronic cigarette. For me, it IS. An electronic device which for me, has replaced the cigarette. What else should I call it? I vape a 510 standard, carrying a PCC in my old cigarette case, along with carts, attys, etc. Replacing cigs was exactly the point of it, and I guess mine is fairly cig-looking. I met a guy in the pub who vapes a provari with some sort of a juice feeding monster mod. Carries several of them. (Has BIG pockets, I guess.) I wouldn't call THAT an e-cigarette. Don't know what he calls it.

When I'm talking to a smoker, and they ask me "Does it work?", my standard response is "It does if you want it to." This is where the conversation (and their interest) either ends, or it turns into a long conversation about vaping. Let's be honest- vaping takes a little more effort than grabbing a pack of smokes and a lighter and heading out the door.

I know there are some people who quit smoking right away, and many who still need something more, like snus, to keep them off of cigarettes. Getting past the morning cigarette was the hardest for me. "It does if you want it to" is my way of letting them know that it can work, and keep you from smoking, but it may take some effort

I have been asked many times these questions....does it work, is that one of the electronic cigarettes, does it work...you get the idea. All have been polite and really interested to know. And I tell them what I know, where they can find info (no free trials), does it help, sure hope so. Few coworkers that I thought would convert...well not there yet, but I've been vaping away 94 days analog free...before that was a couple of months finding my nic level and flavor that would would be just right, worth the journey. And my sis has started her journey as well.
And I have only met ONE vaper (but he forgets his pv sometimes).
It matters to ME what I feel is right for ME, doesn't matter what strangers thinks, they don't live my life.

I never run into that issue. Probably because no one could mistake my PV for a cigarette which is another big advantage to a better battery PV.

i always get "what is that". most people are interested and want to know more but i get the feeling there not going to try it. the other day one of my smart ... friends saw me hitting my bottom feeder and goes "what is that, can i try" so he tries it, claims it tastes bad, and then asks what i paid, i told him and he said "40 bucks! you could have bought 5 packs of smokes for that" then goes on to say theres no way its healthier then a regular cigarette and i should use e-cigs. he wasnt being completely serious, but yeah, that was the response ive had so far.

Most of the people I've received the, "Does it work?" question from were wondering whether or not it worked to help quit smoking cigarettes.

I'm with the OP on finding the "fake cigarette" description as particularly annoying. Even though I don't like 'electronic cigarette', IMO the later isn't as offensive as fake cigarette. There's nothing fake about my PV, and it isn't a wannabe cigarette ... it's better than a cigarette, not an impersonator.

And, for what it's worth, I don't use a cigarette replica either, thank you! LOL

I call it the big lazy man's electronic cigarette, refill/recharge once every 2-3 days (if I were just using one). The mod is a MAP tank btw.

My favorite is a guy I met at a smoke pit (who was smoking). He saw mine and said he had one of those too (I had just an eGo at the time), he pulled out a Blu. I asked how it was working for him, he said it works great (as he takes another drag off his cigarette).

The only reaction I've got was a smoker who yelled "You're using one of those things?" and when I said I was quitting smoking using it, he laughed and said "But it doesn't taste like the real thing does it?" When I shrugged and said it didn't have the crap that the real thing had, he laughed and said "But it's the crap that makes it taste good!" At that point I laughed and said "And it's the crap that will kill you". He didn't have an answer to that...

Are you comparing eating meat with smoking cigarettes? I don't think that's a fair comparison... I have incisors and binocular vision...

Eating meat is no where NEAR as much fun as smoking. ;-) Which is still less fun than vaping.

Seriously- the comparison is: A lot of meat eaters react to my vegetarianism in ways that are very similar to the way a lot of smokers react to my e-cigarette.

Which is to say, defensively. I'm sure that some of the Christians on the forum could tell us about defensive athiests. (And the athiests can tell us about defensive Christians.)

All I'm saying is, when you're doing something that most people aren't (like vaping) a certain amount of people are going to feel like they have to justify themselves, usually by saying something silly.

Best,
Ande

PS- Got a cat? Check out her teeth. You aren't as carnivorous as you think... ;-)
