I call it the big lazy man's electronic cigarette, refill/recharge once every 2-3 days (if I were just using one). The mod is a MAP tank btw.

That sounds a lot better than what the other guys in the bar were calling it. Didn't I hear somebody say "that phallic thing you're always sucking on?" ;-)

Lot more vapor than my 510 though...

Eating meat is no where NEAR as much fun as smoking. ;-) Which is still less fun than vaping.

Seriously- the comparison is: A lot of meat eaters react to my vegetarianism in ways that are very similar to the way a lot of smokers react to my e-cigarette.

Which is to say, defensively. I'm sure that some of the Christians on the forum could tell us about defensive athiests. (And the athiests can tell us about defensive Christians.)

All I'm saying is, when you're doing something that most people aren't (like vaping) a certain amount of people are going to feel like they have to justify themselves, usually by saying something silly.

Best,
Ande

PS- Got a cat? Check out her teeth. You aren't as carnivorous as you think... ;-)

Perhaps - but without meat (and cooked meat) we wouldn't be intelligent. (Specifically cooked meat, is the current theory. 25% more nutrition to support larger brains!)

I'm with the OP on finding the "fake cigarette" description as particularly annoying. Even though I don't like 'electronic cigarette', IMO the later isn't as offensive as fake cigarette.

People have such a visceral reaction to the word "cigarette". Cigarette = BAD.

"Electronic Cigarette" is often perceived as "well, it's still a cigarette".

I find myself saying "do you mind if I don't smoke my fake cigarette?" "Fake" implies that it is NOT a cigarette, which is precisely the message I am trying to get across, along with the fact that it is NOT smoking. Plus, it usually starts things off with a little chuckle, which is always a good thing.

Not one person or establishment (ie: restaurant) has said "no", when I have phrased it this way. In fact, people are very interested in it. Sometimes, though, conversations drift in an annoying direction.. "well, you are going to quit those too eventually, right?".

Me: "Why?" :)

I'm still tryin' to get the Sister-in-law off analogs; gave her a Riva kit and everything. Anyway I don't tote my silver bullet around but the 1100mah riva I do. I feel compelled to talk to co-workers who have to go out to their car to smoke about how much better vaping is than analogs. I've only had about two people ask me about it (4 months in), but had a couple walk up and show me her ego and his screwdriver. Oh and you must excuse some of them because they are so awed by the technology and have a hard time surfin' the web that dumb things come out of their stupid analog smelling mouth. I didn't really want to say that but I forgot how to backspace and delete text.

IMO its a great conversation starter at the pubs. I am a railroader and thought my "brothers" would be giving me a load of crap about using them. Over half the smokers have started to vape since I showed it can be done. I think most reasonable people can see the advantage of not standing out in the freezing rain to smoke.

Someone mentioned that it is a little more complicated than smoking. I disagree. You have to remember that you probably spent 10,15,20 plus years perfecting smoking. And likely after all that time still would burn your fingers, get a pack wet, ruin a shirt, or god forbid spend a morning digging butts out of an ashtray looking for a long one. I do agree there is a learning curve but with the use of forums like this that can be minimized. Starting out it does require some effort.

I also agree that I try and avoid the electronic cigarette title. And start out with vaporizer, then maybe use the C word to further explain.

I will have several people quiz me on this any given night I am out and about. I try and always take the time to show and possible let them take a toot. It has turned out the be the absolute best ice breaker ever. I share the ECF address, and tell them that any question they can think of can be answered here.

I give people the same advice I was given when I first arrived at ECF. Dont plan or try to quit. Put no pressure on yourself. Just buy an ecig and throw it in your purse, pocket, glove box. The next time you having a nic fit somewhere that you cant have a cig just give it a try. Most people will evolve to the ecig just because its better tasting, cheaper, and more convenient.

Just my two cents

Are you comparing eating meat with smoking cigarettes? I don't think that's a fair comparison... I have incisors and binocular vision...

That's what I was thinking....
Don't EVEN come in here and start telling me to stop eating meat.... SMOKING is bad for you, but HUMANS ARE MADE to eat meat. WHOLE other argument right there. Let's leave it that way. LMAO vegans....

The question/comment I get the most is: You're still using that thing? I just answer with, yep, you're still standing in front of me aren't you? Sometimes we will then get into a discussion, but only with those that are truly interested in changing their own habit and lives. Others just leave it alone and I don't get bothered again

Okay- we seem to have missed the point on the veggie analogy.

I've been veggie for a long time- not preaching. Not saying YOU should be veggie. I just have been. And through the years, what happens, sometimes, is that folks who eat meat feel all defensive, and make defensive aggressive remarks about my vegetarianism. (I'm not promoting vegetarianism to you. Just telling you that when you're vegetarian, strangers sometimes feel the need to tell you that killing plants is still killing, so what's the point? And other silly stuff like that.)

I've been vaping for much less time than I've been veggie. But I've already observed that smokers do the same thing to vapers. They tell you that "You're still smoking, so what's the point?" and "Well, you're probably even more addicted than you were before?" And silly stuff like that.

There is no dietary comment intended here. Only an observation that when you do something unusual (vaping, being vegetarian, actually practicing Christianity, not drinking) a certain percentage of folks will feel the need to make silly remarks about it.

Ande

PS- I'm only guessing that non-drinkers get similarly silly comments. ;-) I wouldnt' know, cause I refuse to hang out with non-drinkers.

Gotcha. I thought you were trying to say that eating meat (which humans appear to be made for) is the same as smoking (which they clearly are not - no animal evolved to inhale smoke on planet earth that I'm aware of).

you tell people that you quit smoking.

They ask how.

I tell them "Electronic Cigs"

They say... "oh... so how long are you going to use THAT thing?!"

pisses me off

I get that all the time. I tell them that I can go down to 0 nic if / when I want but at this time I have no plans to. I explain that nicotine doesn't kill it's the other 4000 chemicals in cigarettes that do. Hell, my non-smoking wife vapes. 0nic juice ofcourse.

I use a Megalodon, or Big kazoo, or TekkMod in public, so I don't usually get the "Is that a fake cigarette?" question. It's usually, 'What the hell is that thing?' I love being questioned about it. It gives me an excuse to explain and demonstrate. Sometimes I even draw a crowd, which is even better. It's like giving the sermon on the mount...Blessed are the vapers, for theirs is a cancer free life...

To everyone I say be proud, but not cocky. Be vigilent, but not arrogant. Be...well, just be the best ambassador for vapers you can be. I always get good responses when I explain it to people, and have converted a lot of people, just as I was once converted.

Your response to those questions that we think are stupid (and a lot of them are) could be saving someones life, and there is no greater purpose.

Got the "how long are you going to use that thing, as long as you are you know you are still smoking". I feel better and can do more already have better energy and breath easier, why can't folks just be decent I was outside away from everyone and not being in anybodies face. Vaping is NOT smoking why can they not understand, in my opinion they were lucky I had a good strong battery and atty at that point;). Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.

In regards to the "so when are you going to quit that":

I've come across that as well, and it really bugs me. It would be great to have a question to throw back at anyone who says anything that uninformed. How about "Oh, I don't know, when are you going to quit eating dessert?". Dessert could of course be substituted with anything edible, delicious and unnecessary, such as cake, chocolate, coffee.
