Excellent article, thanks for posting. I'm always happy when I see these desk murderers called out for what they really are. Few commentators have the testicular fortitude to come right out and say "City Council’s Plan to Protect Cigarettes and Kill Smokers". Well done, Dr. Ross!

Dr. Ross understands what I've been saying for quite a while: we must speak the truth boldly and unambiguously. We must not beat around the bush or water down our statements out of misplaced notions of politeness and civility. No one ever fixed an injustice by not calling it what it is.

I'm no shill for anything, really, but if you have not read this article, please read it!
Fantastic, short, sweet, and directly to the point. Powerful!
If you are hearing that your city council members or local officials, anywhere, are spewing ignorance, it's all in this article! (Come to think of it, This should be a hand-out to city officials considering bans of anything......)

Good article! One minor problem:

"While Bloomberg’s regulations on indoor smoking, food retailers’ sanitation grades, and forcing fast-food restaurants to list calorie counts are widely acknowledged to have had some positive impacts..."

Not all that 'widely acknowledged' - many studies show no impact at all, despite a certain segment that 'likes' it and thinks everyone should... but don't :)

However, more on point - the reality of the ban on vaping:

"The results of this, if enacted, will be nothing good. A new industry, vapor products sold mainly in “vaporiums” springing up in neighborhoods all around the city, will be shuttered, employees will be laid off, and businesses will move to nearby counties (where they will be welcomed). Worse, this proposal will likely increase smoking in the city by exiling a product that is helping thousands of New Yorkers eliminate or reduce their smoking addiction."

My wife has been on Weight Watchers for a few years now, and it really works.
And since she makes the food, I have been on Weight Watchers for a few years now myself for the most part.

There are some pretty fantastic recipes that would shock you as to how good they are.

She just recently made a buttermilk and lemon bundt cake made with beets.
And it was so good that it was hard not to eat the whole darn thing in one sitting.

We generally don't buy any fast food that does not reveal carb, protein, fat, and fiber information.
That is our choice, but I would never dream of forcing such a choice on others.

We vote with our wallet, which is how it should be.

I have done Atkins and do it when I want to lose a few pounds. Fat in food doesn't create fat (or cholesterol) in the body. Enough carbs do create fat in the body. With the internet and libraries - people can find out this stuff.

I also 'would never dream of forcing such a choice on others', including food outlets. If people want that, some vendors would accommodate. Others wouldn't. Again, if that is what you want then only patronize those who do. Don't pass laws to force everyone to do what you value. (not speaking directly to 'you,' understand :)

Even if these laws did anything to further the stated goals of those who promulgate them (and there's no evidence that they do), they'd still be morally indefensible in a society that claims to value the right of individual self-determination. The right to do stupid things to your own body should be no less sacrosanct than any other right.
