The hours past and gradually I began to feel nervous, not because I wanted to smoke a cigarette, but because I didn't have any. So, I went out an bought a pack.
That sounds like what many people experience.
One of my older brothers figured out how to prevent having that feeling, when he quit his 46yr. smoking habit (2-2.5 PAD)...going cold turkey about 8 years ago. For it to work for him...he left a pack of smokes in places where he'd always kept ciggies (on his nightstand, on the end table by his recliner, in his car, etc.). He said by doing that, if/when a craving hit for months afterwards, there was no urgent feeling of having to run to the store for a pack. He'd just look at any of those open packs and make the conscious decision to not have one. It worked in his case, and he hasn't had a ciggie since then.
But, everyone is different, and they have to find out what helps them get off the smokes. I knew his method wouldn't work for me at all, so I chose to do it with the help of vaping instead.
