It's sad that the ONLY hope I see is with China itself - they OWN us.

Let's hope Chinese officials tell Washington: ban the ecig and keep messing with our exports and we'll stop buying your debt and then you are completely and TOTALLY screwed.

I dont know about any of this, But i do know i just keep getting more ticke doff and once the BT has its way getting an ecig on the self then the GOV is gonna throw a HUGE tax on it.......All in All it is just sad.

As an Adult i have to worry about the Kids ruining it for us and the FDA , Bt and the rest of the Gov out there telling us what we can enjoy and what we cant..jerkfaces

I swore I wouldn't jump into these types of discussions--I find the speculation interesting, but it drags down my new-found vaping bliss. Certainly many reasonable thoughts here, though, even if I hope the most dire are wrong.

But I wanted to jump in to ask if anyone's seen any sort of national e-cig "union" to represent folks like us. I'd love to see some sort of national organization, representing users of all brands, that could mobilize the growing groups of people like us. I'd even gladly kick in a few bucks a year to have representation if needed. There must be a few lawyer-vapers who'd be willing to be a part of such a group. Well, that's all I got. Over and out.

It's actually less than two cents, but that's just mincing words, I agree... Being in the V4L sub-fora, you might consider giving cartomizers a look-see. Their lifespan is amazing. Regardless, I can reproduce (from scratch) a current-tech cartomizer in a few minutes for a dollar or so in materials. That's in a one-off quantity. Point being - there's not much point in getting them any lower priced. In quantity, the entire unit's BOM is worth something in the neighborhood of your five cents.

Don't have ANY experience with cartomizers. All I know is that there's a hundred people making battery mods using NO OEM components (except the atty threads, if they don't cut their own), we have dozens of alternatives for the carts, including some homegrown from scratch, but all I see on the Attys is how to remanufacture the original. Either the original design was perfect (riiiight), or creating these from scratch is a major challenge. I know it's only 5 cents worth of nichrome, but I'm not going to wrap, splice, solder and machine threads (or some alternative connector) to save the 5-10 bucks they cost. If I could buy (or strip from a disposable) a mass produced heating element with a longer life or better resistance profile, it might be worth it to give it a shot. There's some really cool silicon, printed circuit and ceramic micro heaters out there now, but no one is targeting the e-cig form factor. If they were, and volume brought the price down, you might see a whole new realm of mods (total departures from the old tube and tip. How about a harmonica mod!)

An atomizer is a pretty simple beast (like Adrenalynn pointed out). Even if you look at the entire assembly of your typical 510 style atty (vs just the heating element), it's basically a threaded metal assembly holding a ceramic pot with coiled wire as a heating element, and a woven nichrome bridge that wicks fluid into the 'hot' bits. All this is connected to a tube in a standardized size to accept mass-produced mouthpieces. You don't see a lot of people building them from scratch because as you cite, even at 5-10ish bucks, it's not worth the effort for most.

Even so, one can be made from scratch with a pretty small investment of time and effort, it just may not be as 'pretty'. If push comes to shove, I'd bet we'll start seeing homegrown versions pretty quickly.

The atomizer in a carto is even a simpler beast. You've got your heating element shrouded in a fabric wick surrounded by batting - no ceramic pot or woven metal wick to deal with. And those puppies last longer than any 'traditional' atomizer I've ever seen - in most cases the batting material will wear out or gunk up beyond repair before you'll ever pop one while delivering fantastic taste, throat hit, etc. It's a pretty impressive piece of tech.
