My impression of these after about 3 weeks: love them, ordering more
Anyway, they clogged, got hard to draw so I tried cleaning one out with a dental brush and killed it. The second one I tried normal hot water cleaning that didn't help any with the draw, so I went straight to cutting it open. Should have taken pics... After rinsing and removing the filler, I found that both coils were caked globs and almost completely solid in the middle. With the filler removed, I tried a quick dry-firing for a second or two. The "globs" sort of ignited! They didn't flame up, but actually continued to glow and smolder w/o power to the atty's for almost a minute until there was nothing but ash. The atty's were now clean, but yikes - it wouldn't "go out" until all the gunk burned off! Imagine what it would have been like if it had dry-fired with the filler in...
Couple more notes (sorry if already mentioned):
The filler appears to be identical in size, shape and composition (but longer when unrolled) to the filler I removed from a KR8 carto. Not sure if it really matters to anyone, but I thought someone mentioned somewhere that it was supposed to be different??? Mine also had twin scorch marks from running it too low or something.
The coils aren't always centered perfectly in line with the air hole - which is why some people have problems trying to clean them with a pin or paper clip (or maybe just me with mine, lol). And once they get clogged to the point mine were, there's really not much you can do unless you remove the poly and burn 'em out. Mechanically dislodging the buildup won't really remove it and you'll end up still tasting the crud anyway if manage to do it w/o popping the atty.
FYI: The atty's themselves have no solder on them. Rather, the ends are crimped to teeny copper pieces which are then soldered to the base and wires.
