Howdy Gang,
Just purchased an SD Sidewinder Pyrex tank from Valley Vapes. very very pretty.
It comes with some unnamed brand pre punched, SR carto installed. Maybe I should have checked ohms before choosing volt setting, but I started out with low voltage and worked up.
It was running like a dream at 5.3 on my ProVari for a day, then shorted out the unit. E-1 message. After reboot there were brief flashes of E-8 and E-4 messages. Huh?? Reboot again and it settled on E-1. Changed cartos and ProVari works fine.
Checked the offending carto's ohms which were at 1.2, which is LR, not SR, am I correct in that? and then switched the whole SD assembly to an ego c twist which I think is a knock off so who knows what volts it's actually running... where it's working fine at somewhere between 3.7 and 4 volts. Is it possible to short the unit by running low resistance on too high a voltage?
er... I thought that just created potential atty/carto burn out, not shorts.
I barely know what I'm talking about. Developing some hands on experience right about............. NOW.
Just tested the ProVari with the SD at 3.7 volts after giving the whole shebang a rest and it's not shorting but the vapor tastes different. Not burned exactly, but chemically. There we go. A hard draw brings out a burned taste.
Bleh....bad carto? burned carto? incompatible with ProVari carto?
Backing off the volts to 3.2 and things seem to be clearing up. Even the chemical taste is somewhat clearing up, but I'm bummed because the SD is loaded with my newest creation Blueberry Rose which is or was totally awesome...sweet and exotic and I only made a tiny little batch. Back to the mixing bowl. In the meantime maybe I should transfer the juice, bag the carto and start with a fresh one?
Any general education, correction, wising up.... y'all think would be useful to this obvious novice is welcome. Thanks for listening.

LR cartos around 2+ ohms depending on what brand you use. If they are dual coil they could be 1.5 or 17 ohms. Since you say it was an SR carto and were able to work up to 5.3v then there must be a crude build up on the coil, although it sounds like it happened awful fast.

The provari with give you an error if the voltage is set too high for the resistance of the carto. It won't short out it just won't fire until you reduce the voltage.

Putting it on a twist at 3.7v - 4v has me stumped because it should work on the Provari at those voltages unless the Provari has a resistance level above 1.2 ohms. I don't know what the lowest resistance limit is on the Provari but if you hit it then the Provari wouldn't fire.

I think your carto is bad now. I would try again with a new carto and check the resistance before you fill and again before you fire it the first time.

You can pour your juice back in the bottle when you change cartos. I do this all the time. I hate to waste my precious juice.

1.2 ohms is low for the Provari. If your getting E1's 8's and 4's then I would quit using it. I have a Provari. When I was running some low resistance at probably to high a voltage the Provari eventually went south. Had to send it in for repair. Got to ask yourself is a $200 mod worth using a $2.00 carto. Change it out and check the next to make sure it's ok before you start vaping it. you can do that by not installing it in the tank just screw it on and do a resistance check or get a cheap meter for future use to check your atomizers. I have used 1.8 ohm with out trouble but if you use 2 ohms it will give you a buffer if you screw up on your voltage. I never go below 1.5 when say I'm using a RDA or RBA on it.
