I have been using an A7 that I paid 8 bucks for and an ERA that I paid almost 70 bucks for, one in each REO... They are mostly the same, the most important difference I see is that you can easily flood the A7, while the ERA is very forgiving on that regard. If I knew then, what I know now, I wouldn´t have bought the ERAs... I like them, and they look really good, but performance is very similar.

Hell yes to that. Drill that hole man they won't be similar anymore they'll be identical! If you don't want to do anything permanent and you have some vision/clearo tubes hanging around jam one in there instead of the top cap and drill that to see how it performs

If you decide to take on the steel, just take it SLOW and use lube. I actually ended up dremeling it under water, which worked quite fast. Took me 30 mins of cursing to get there though lol. I've drilled steel before and it was hard, but this was ridiculous.

So yeah, the A7 is def not made of copper or brass for any skeptics out there, might be made of adamantium though lol

Have you guys seen the Trippy Top for the ERAs?

Howdy ERA-equipped REOnauts,
We've been working on wick coil configurations over in the TrippyTipps forum and last night I documented the process of duplicating the single loop juice well wick configuration. I thought since I got the idea from this thread I'd at least share the photos to possible help my fellow REO-kin. I used 3mm silica wick and 32AWG Kanthal A-1. The final configuration metered out at 2.0 Ohms on the nose.

Initial install into posts prior to tightening up the loop

Started to clean up the coil spacing
WickMounted1.jpg
Final image after tightening up the wick and trimming the excess. Still needed to cut off the leads.

One of our crew reproduced this with Bamboo versus my 3mm Silica and said it was knocking his socks off. Hope this benefits someone. Brew

Nice setup Brew! I've been running the same way with silica on my VVW and #10 cotton thread on my Grand. I bought a big ball of the cotton from walmart for like $4, so I figured I may as well use it. I tried the cotton on the VVW, and maybe it was just the lighter juice I was using, but it seemed to burn out a lot quicker than the silica. I've been rockin DIY cinnamon redhots on the Grand and it works wonderfully with cotton on a loop of 4 strands with 3-4 wraps. I've also decided to open up my second ERA to 1/16" air hole, simply for the amount of vapor. I couldn't be happier with my ERAs! Cheers!

Good Afternoon REOville,
One of the Trippy Peeps came up with an even easier setup that I put to use last night. I discovered the problem I was having with flavor and it was shorting of a couple of coils on each end of my 6/5 wrap against the positive and negative poles of the ERA. So make sure you dry-burn your coils before trimming the coil leads to see the entire coil glow orange. Anyway here's the design and if you want more info you can check out the thread over in the Trippy Tips forum.

Simple 6/5 coil wrapped around a single fold of 3mm silica wick.
SingleFold65.jpg
Imagine you insert the bottom stand between the 2 poles from front to back and then loop the coil-n-wick assembly around the center post so that the coil leads can be inserted into the coil connection holes on the front side.
SingleFoldLooped.jpg
Pull the strand exiting out from under the coil to tighten the loop and trim even with the edge of the catch basin. This is mine after a couple evenings of use. Having the loop covering both the front and rear juice holes definitely helps this design wick effectively. Brew

I made something similar for my VVG not too long ago. I pulled the tail through the loop instead of running under the coil between the posts. I'll definitely give this a shot next as covering both juice feed holes with wick has worked best for me as well.

Just did this on my VVW with a little bigger loop on the folded end and I'm loving it major flavor, TH, and VAPOR:D

If you're into SS and want a bit of a longer runtime between squonks you can try rolling mesh around some organic...

This is 500 mesh around 8 strands of Lydia's:

I've got a fair amount of experience with ERA's and from what I can tell, this is about as good as they get IMO (but I haven't I tried the pyrex pipette tube yet)...but this setup seems to last forever and taste is true...the bamboo is just a juice reservoir/supplier to the mesh...when the flavour starts to lessen, re-squonk, no chance of bamboo burn (well of course you "could" burn the bamboo but you'd have to get pretty medieval with the fire button)

just saying...

Thanks for the input Quigs I've been dying to try this! Where is the best place to get the SS 500 mesh?

In this case 500, 400, 325, etc...probably wouldn't make much difference, this was just the old 500 wick out of my ZAG (sold the ZAG, cut up the wick for a higher purpose ;)). You're not "really" relying on the meshes capillary action here, more on the fact that it's just porous, there's only about 3 or 4 wraps of mesh on the bamboo. I've tried using just mesh, both "U" shaped and straight on various angles and although it works you have to squonk quite a bit, and if you forget, the dry hit can be sudden and harsh...the bamboo acts as a buffer (I squonk the ERA like Cyrus, squeeze till a bead of juice appears at the air hole then release, bottle sucks back any unabsorbed juice)...I've also done this with 3.5mm silica instead of bamboo and it also works quite well, in fact, because the silica isn't in direct contact with the coil, probably less spalling of silica fibers and no bad silica taste. I just use the Lydia's bamboo because nothing beats it in wicking, capacity of absorbtion and heat tolerance except maybe rolled cotton, but that can be a bit of a pain to size and roll...plus I have about 8000' of Lydia's kicking around

One more thing, this is a great way to get into the mesh set-up as far as no hassle...because you can literally drown the mesh/coil at will, and the bamboo provides all the juice you could need, shorts and hotspots are rare and easily fixed when compared to a straight genny build...so for you out there that have had a belly-full of trying to get a genny to work and have a bunch of failed attempts at wicks, this is where you can use them, chop one up and give this a try, you don't need to be a "genny elitist" to get this to work, it's a piece of cake and the taste is as bright and clean as any genny :)
