thanks, guys! i tried a couple of different vice grips but they all slip off. i'm now in possession of a metal saw powered by a lithium battery hoping to cut the bolt and save the terminal battery wire end. but is that safe to use over a battery?
Vice grips/locking pliers and righty-tighty, lefty loosey will make quick work of that.
Otherwise wire cutters and a $3-4 lug for the new battery and let whoever you trade the core into deal with it. Looks like there's plenty of wire to crimp one on.

Just heat the nut on the opposite side of the cable, careful to only heat the nut it selfIv seen them work in a pinch, they can actually heat a small nut to a red glow, expanding the metal & loosing it's grip
