I used to have so much fun with people that had radar detectors. Nothing quite as entertaining as flipping on the power to a modulated X, K, or KA Gunn oscillator when someone goes flying by. Seeing an officer try to figure out why his radar showed 90 when a car was going 30 MPH does take the cake though. Doppler, just a math equation. I still have quite a bit of equipment including a couple of old police MPH radar units stashed away, but haven't dabbled in years.

We to have a graduated licensing plan now it takes 3 full years to get a G2 witch is a full licence.
For the first 2 years there are plenty of strict regulations. It's a good thing I guess? our maybe just a way for cops to write more tickets? insurance for a 17 year old is really expensive! I even had to put the old truck (10 silverado) in his name. Just incase, this way it don't affect my insurance rate if he does some thing Stupid! :)
Is like that here too, check out these hoops!

Overview – from learner to full licence

There are seven steps to progress from a learner to a full licence:

Pass the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) – get your learner licence

Hold your learner licence for at least 12 months, and complete 120 hours of supervised driving practice, including 20 hours of night driving (unless you’re 25 or older)

Pass the Driving Test – get your provisional P1 (red) licence (restricted to 90km/h)

Hold your P1 licence for at least 12 months

Pass the Hazard Perception Test (HPT) – get your provisional P2 (green) licence (restricted to 100 km/h)

Hold your P2 licence for at least two years (24 months)

Pass the Driver Qualification Test (DQT) – get your full licence.

The Valentine 1 can't be detected.

Oh it can by the Spectre series, it's just that the commercially available detector detectors of the time VG2 were tuned for all the rest. All radio wave receivers are superheterodyne except what are called direct conversion (think crystal radio set) which uses an oscillator tuned to a frequency a specific amount below or above the signal to be received. That is mixed with the incoming signal which creates a signal that is the mathematical difference between them. Most do this twice to lower the frequency. When done twice the first converted frequency is called the IF "intermediate frequency". The reason this is done is that you can make the amplification stage after the conversion a set frequency and vary the first oscillator frequency to change the frequency you want to receive. It is simpler to build an amplifier for a set frequency with more sensitivity (amplification) and a narrow bandwith (amplify only the signal you want, not ones adjacent to it). All other detectors were using the standard IF of 10.7 Mhz when Bell decided to change it up. Detector detector manufacturers followed suite by including other frequencies Bell was using and thus was born the Spectre series (last I knew Spectre IV was the latest). Other Detector manufactures followed Bell's lead and that is why the Spectre is a series and was redesigned in stages to include these newer frequencies. By incorporating extra tuned bandpass filters (only let the signal you want in and keep the oscillator signal from getting out as much as possible) a lot of higher end current detectors can only be detected from such a close range that they are virtually impossible to detect unless the car is stopped and manually sweeped. This whole cat and mouse game started (as far as I am aware) during WWII with the Germans listening for the oscillators of underground receivers tuned to known underground frequencies. They were tube type short wave receivers and emitted huge amounts of signal from their oscillators which could be detected up to 10 miles away. Back in the late 70's I read about this WWII cat and mouse game and ordered crystals from radio shack that were 10.7 Mhz offset from the local police frequencies. Sure enough I could detect any police radio that was on from about 2 blocks away using a external scanner antenna on the car. Modded a scanner to make it more sensitive to the frequencies I was receiving and a light that would come on when a signal was detected. At maximum gain I could detect city, county, and state radios from about 3/4 mile which is more than sufficient to defeat instant on radar. Downside was it would also detect anyone with a scanner listening in to them. Through use of DIY deflectors and radar absorbent materials, in the mid '80's I dropped the front facing detectable range of my '85 IROC from about a mile down to 150 feet as verified by my neighbor a friendly police officer. Also DIY built a few radar jammers, a transmitter that could either keep a microwave supermarket door opener from opening or open it without anyone at it. Did many other ornery things with my knowledge of electromagnetic principals just because it was a challenge and I was ornery.

Not if it's the original Valentine model and they have Spectre detectors. I didn't keep up with the tech much after the mid '80s but the STi Magnum is supposed to be well cloaked from what I have read. At least until the game escalates again. ;)

Been in Firewall Hell for the last week. Our Israeli Corp IT decided to roll out Checkpoint globally. They came in and basically broke everything I had set up in Sonicwall so I have been working damn near around the clock ever since. I sure will be glad to see these dweebs go back home.......

virginia requires 40 hours of driving under parental supervision before they can sign up for driver's ed at the high school! i thought that was the funniest thing i ever heard!

and the driving log had to be notarized!

MD requires 60 hours logged, 9 months after learners and 40 hours classroom and additional 6 hours professional lessons on road...for a provisional....talk about a PITA
no more DE at high schools ..liability issues I guess..OTOH..parallel parking dropped from license test due to too many failures....wish these friggin nanny states would stop trying to one up each other

They rolled out these:

This gives them the ability to manage policies globally. Which I get, and dont blame them. They just didnt do very well with the migration part of it. I gave them all of the NAT/Routes/Objects out of the old Sonicwall well in advance in hopes that this would have gone smoother, apparently they didnt pay any attention to it though.

Interesting. I don't remember that. My big Escort was stolen from my car so I replaced it with the Passport.

The new $600+ systems have laser diffuser and some even have jammers (illegal). Not sure how they get around the legality of it but they do. A friend of mine installed the new Passport system ($1700!!!) in his Porsche. Pretty cool system.
What!? You mean they work? LOL, I was showing my wife the picture of the radar detector and started getting the lecture "your too old for that sh** now"

I can't lie, reading that stuff, seeing those cool detectors, being a tech nerd.... Man I want one again! Not a $1700 mind you, but I'd love to have one none the less.

My wife thinks she wants one of these. Even though I know she'll never use it. I may have to pull the trigger on one.
