Back in the late 90's, I used to treat my lithiums like you are supposed to. Although out in the RC field, you start breaking some rules for convenience. Like fast charging and always storing your batteries full. And there are two important things in all of those years, overcharging and charging hot batteries really kill them fast. Here is one in-depth video I had ever seen, regarding care of lithium batteries.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I was wondering if anyone could advice on how to store spare LIPO packs?

I just got a spare one for my VT200 in case the original craps out on me and I'm not sure what to do with. I got a cool dry place for it but do I need to charge it first, or even periodically, or can I just leave it in the packaging until I need it?
If you have never charged it all, I wouldnt. Many lipos ship about 50% charged but also have a preservative that breaks down the first time you charge them. This preservative gives the cells a longer shelf life, but it dissipates upon the first charge.

That's the first time I hear that, do you have some more info on this magical sounding preservative perhaps? And would simply measuring the voltage be enough to dissipate it you think?

Sorry, its been a few years since I read about it, and now I cant find the source article. I do recall reading about it on a reputable source though.

This is the only thing my google-fu is showing up this morning.

Oh man! Sweet-Vapes pulled their house e-juices offline. Now what am I going to do? I only have 2ml of their Nutty Coffee left and I haven't found anything that tastes even close to this. It neither tastes nutty or coffee like to me and it tastes like nothing I ever had before. But those days when you get sick of the taste of all of your juices, this one changes everything. They are pretty stiff lipped over there and they probably won't tell me how to DIY it. :(

I'm sure we'll see more of that, I ordered a bunch of my fav juices, enough to last me 6-8 months. Between now and then I'll learn DIY and make my own. I dabbled in it some time ago, it was OK but not as good as what I was buying. Just got three gallons of VG and one PG a couple days ago to add to my stock, that with the nic and the rest I have now I'll be set for at least ten years. Up yours FDA!

Lucky for me, My spare DX battery is untouched :) I was going to charge it & try it out with all the post of problems, I thought it would be the right thing to do. Now I know what to do for sure :)

Oh I charged all of mine up right away and ran them through each mod to make sure they all work perfectly. I'll just keep them in rotation so each one will be at full charge (ok just at 4.10v per cell) while sitting. And after 250 recharges or 10 years passes by, I will probably need to replace all of the lipos once again. No big deal, since they will probably have better lipos by then. Maybe those that last a lifetime will become available. :)

My spare DX battery will probably stay in long term storage, I have enough mods & batteries on the go now :) It's nice to know I left it in the best state for long term storage :) It was just a fluke for me, cause I had every intention to check it out, but never got around to it :)

Too be honest it sounds a bit like some sort of urban legend to me, but I'll do some research and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for sharing.

I have so many lipos for laptops, cameras, phones, MP3 players, RC, etc. The hardest thing is checking on the ones you don't use every year or so. I have some that are over 17 years old and I don't even check those anymore. When I checked them 5 years ago, most of them were still going, but lost quite a bit of capacity.

I have a Windows 98 laptop under my bed that still has a good original battery (I think), but it's not Lipo.
If I remember correctly it's NiCad, I guess I should pull it out for a walfare check.
Indeed. I still have two Toshiba 2595XDVD laptops with Windows 98, but they came with lipos. I am pretty sure my two Compaq Concerto (Windows 3.1) uses NiMH packs. I have three packs and last time I checked, one is still working fine. I think those were the first commercially available Windows tablets. They still work too. :)

I just pulled it out, it is a Lipo after all, I might have gotten confused with this old Apple laptop that I ran across recently. Anyway It didn't have enough juice in the battery to boot so it's on AC power now. The AC cord plugs into the laptop directly, no power pack.
Edit: it didn't have enough juice..........

Well in my case, the problem was with the pins on the board itself. I thought it was the battery originally, I was wrong.

I think willy had the battery problem though..... So it's a double edge sword I guess. If you store the battery and it has issues when you use it, was it defective originally or stored improperly. Those kinds of scenarios drive me nuts. Damn if you do, damn if you don't.
