Your cotton is wet so it's wicking properly.

Not sure how you are getting what you think is a dry hit, the cotton isn't dry.
The flavor is muted quite a lot compared to the little cotton I had in there before. Also, if I go anywhere higher than 45 Watts I'll get a dry hit. I took this picture right after wicking it and saturating it with juice. I'll vape it and take another picture.

Just, scanned a bunch of clips on the Avocado last night and I know what I'd do…fill the holes. Make sure there's just enough wick to avoid seepage thru the holes past the wick ends. Take the leads below the holes. Just enough so there's no slippin' out if tilted or inverted.

No, don't see leavin' a little open to let juice in. You want juice in the wick, not past it. And no, cotton doesn't expand in the coil. The volume that's in the coil is the volume that's in there, loose or tight. The cotton swells outside the coil, true dat. A good thing. That's what you're counting on. No bypass of the holes once they do. And enough wick so you can have the ends tufft up so gravity sag doesn't pull it down exposing the outward end-turns. This may cause dry-out by reducing flow to the interior of the coil.

Now if that much cotton is too much compression,, you could slightly remove a bit from the center to facilitate flow. But I'd think given what you've said that you'll want good velocity into the coil and compression will give you that (just like constricting the end of a garden hose). That compaction of the coil's media will cause the internal flow to be fast and lean compared to the external supply. So by regulating that compression both of the cotton inserted and the Ø chosen (the potential compression) you've got an effective gas pedal.

A bit tighter should give you an increase in vaporization if the juice from leads is adequate and most importantly consistent. If not, you dry out. I think filling the holes will give you that.

Good luck J. :)

p.s. After the hardware review and a million of us built it…after the snap-shot coil build…I'd love to see the video a week down the road where the glad face admits the build sux like the back end of a rail yard mutt. Then, builds it right and explains why. I'd like to see that video.

Thanks Mac. I know exactly what you're saying and believe it or not I've tried that before already before I even made this post. Geekvapes made those juice holes roughly the size of a 3.8mm screwdriver. Which makes sense if you think about it.

My original coil that I posted on the first page was wrapped around 3.8mm, with Scottish wicking method, JUST BELOW the juice channels. Not all the way down to the bottom of the tank like I've been doing for the past week or so. The coil was also super low to the deck for the sole purpose of minimizing the juice travel.

I know what you mean when you talk about compression of the cotton in the coil, BUT the cotton is covered by the coil, it's inside it, I'm not sucking on the actual cotton, I'm sucking air THROUGH the coil with cotton in it. How is compression within the coil improve the juice flow from the actual juice wells?

I will build something today, I don't know what yet but probably nothing too fancy. I'll wrap it around 3.8 mm, compress the cotton, cut it just so that it covers the juice holes to prevent leaking, and I'll let you know how it works.

I know it's a science at this point lol

My ultimate goal is when it doesnt matter if I'm taking a 2 second or 5 second pull, whether it's sitting for 2 hours or whether I'm chain vaping it back to back, it should wick with full on full blown flavor. I know it's possible. It's just trial and error.

Thank you for the great post Mac. I'll build something today and let you guys know what happens.

Preciate that…and all you guys accomplished. Before I had to step in and get my hands dirty! :D

Good to stay busy with all the nonsense going on. It does wear ya down if you get too stuck in the muck with all the negatives. Need to be getting stuff done or this train loses steam. And we just can't be havin' that.

Don't think you'll be able to get (3mm) Nextel over there (it's restricted export) but you might look into. If so 2.75-2.80mm is ideal for a compromise flavor, diffusion build. You can get it into 2.5 and it's a cloud producer at high power but dries out too quickly. Nah, I'm thinkin' way more flow capacity, higher res, contact surface, and power. Yep, that's the ticket. Could have sworn you were one of those who tried ceramic way back when (I seldom forget an image).

Long live the vape. Good luck. :)

p.s. The 4mm, 3.57mm build was a fail (far too snug) in the long lead vertical. The weave and fiber are thick and tight. Before excess lead tension skewed it wrecking turn contact, the 7-open 22 was kickin' it. The weave and fiber are thick and tight. Need more Ø to make wick install less straining on the leads. Wick is awesome and I see it easily out-doin' other media on 100W+ rigs.

Can you get 1.5mm Nextel? maybe you could just double it over, might possibly be even easier to re-wick this way pulling a looped end through with a bit of wire rather than trying to thread an end, plus you can hit your 3mm or 4mm wick size target if so wish.
If it was available over here i would certainly try it out, i have a family member that i have to rebuild for all the time as he's a lazy git, sometimes i won't see him for a couple of weeks or so and his cotton ends up looking like a cats turd from where he ends up leaving his mod in a place that whens he working hes collecting bits of wall plaster and cut wood etc etc :D
I've been thinking about using ekowool or similar for him so he can just wash his rda+wick, dry burn and start over.

Rayon is a nice material, i spect you've already tried it!? lasts a lot longer than cotton before it needs changing, i find it great in lower wattage builds like my rta's that i have on me when i'm doing stuff where i can't drip, the only gripe i have with it is that on vHot builds it wicks the juice to the coil a little to quick! this is the reason why the Taste and TH is amplified, compared to cotton, i have to take shorter pulls at maybe 80w+, its very noticeable at 170w+ and my preferred wick at this range is cotton.
The rayon seems to be on a catch up being to fast for its own good imo! But you already knew all this didnt ya Mac! hehe! :)

I have an ijoy limitless on its way to me and i have to be honest, i don't know why but thats what i first thought we were talking about here, i asked some people elsewhere if they wick leaving a gap in the wick holes and they said no it vapes great filled up, looking at both the avocado and the limitless from pics there shouldn't be much difference in the way its wicked through the deck holes.

I can't remember if we touched on this but not having enough airflow will also cut your pull time down.

I want to mention your coil legs and using the bottom post holes again because with the angle your coil is being pulled down towards the deck you are also creating a gap between the wick tail and the end wraps which could if you have a hot spot or hot leg give you a burnt taste, if you used the bottom holes and pulled the coil up slightly so you don't melt your insulator then you should have less of an angle.

Mac are you getting the Avocado because it has the single coil option or do you do duals as well, a lot of people are talking about the ijoy limitless and saying its a great RDTA but it doesn't have that option to close off half the deck.

I just got home. This thing has been sitting for hours. I hit it for 2 seconds and boom. Dry hit. Can someone explain this to me cause it's starting to get on my nerves. I have no idea why I'm getting a dry hit. I tilt it. Dry hit. 65 Watts. Dry hit. Short pull. Dry hit. Dafak

Wicks are to the bottom of the tank. Makes no difference. Alien coil flavor beast. Makes no difference. Little cotton. Makes no difference. More cotton. Still no difference. I have no idea anymore what to do with this thing and am completely puzzled. I honestly thought I had all bases covered. Apparently not. Help me guys :(

Going to an Alien coil is a step in the wrong direction, they use up the juice in the wick quickly.

Do you have any 32g kanthal? if so can you try braiding some wire like this and try it, they are awesome for flavour and longer pulls as you have a lot of wick coverage

Yes dude I got tons of wire. I'll braid it tonight and see how it turns out. The alien coil is pretty sick, I put 8 drops of juice in it yesterday just watching it seep everything in. Unreal how much juice this thing is holding. Yet it's not pulling from the wicks fast enough. I'm so puzzled about that.

Yeah nice one, give it a try, you have nothing to lose, hopefully it will pleasantly surprise you :)

I'm sat here messing around with builds, i have a comp lyfe battle deck that came yesterday, so i thought i'd go back to basics and just do a dual spaced 4wrap on 3mm id with 26g n80, came out to 0.21 ohms, a little cooler than i'm used to but i got say its pretty dam good and you can take long pulls on it :)
i'll try post a pic but atm my phone is acting up!

Thx Just. Know you get it. Picked up on your thread since it seems you're after a vape style I'm fond of and target routinely (60-75W, VW) for chain and clouds. Kicked in as I firmly believe tail thinning for production is fable from my testing and I've explained the reasons. Good vapor dispersion which everyone likes but you're dripping constantly or perhaps running dry. But if thicker wick muted flavor at some point? You're simply too tight. So not sure you see what I mean by compression. It's how much the cotton is squeezed in the coil.

Saw your orig build and the legs don't quite close the juice holes. Me, as I said, I'd fill 'em. If thicker wick muted flavor, you're simply too tight (in the coil). But if you thin too much end-to-end, you'll limit how much juice is available at higher power (flow). Seems that's the problem you're having.

Enjoy the experiment. You got us lookin' at the Avocado.

Good luck. :)

Lot of fog, no density…for my taste. LOL Kinda makes me feel like I'm vapin' air (and Vivi Nova nightmares later). Gotta have the stout.

But a good suggestion. And I'm sure you understand why I rec folks find a flavor target temp they can get to simply and enjoy with straight wire. Think a lot of peeps come up short as soon as they hit on somethin' that works for them to never imagine it could be diff or better. Then one day they pull out the stupid hand wound single and it knocks their socks off. And not necessarily because it's really better…they just suddenly can taste the cinnamon. You have to keep an open mind.

Good luck. :)

Yes the build is a little airy but its a pleasant change for me and once you start taking a few hits off it it just gets better, i always feel the need to swap things up Mac , i'm always rotating through different build's hitting the taste buds from slightly dif angles :D

Yeah, this thread made me consider it, for the post spread. Better for larger parallels and thick-wire tensioned spaced or twisted which I still make on occasion. If I'd do another genny tank tho I'd prolly like staggered T-posts (Helios, hi-low +/-) and throw vert's in. They really are the cleanest most productive; I think, the orientation forces faster juice and vapor convection. Don't find externally wicked as effective. Problem with good vert platforms like the Origin was like most else, air flow. Still have genny's I've never built in my collection.

Think I'd go for the Limitless. We'll see. I'd hate to see 'em roll up the boardwalk and not have one.

Good luck. :)

However that's drippers. Tanks especially Genesis style are completely different. Avocado may not be an over complicated tank and the concept is pretty straightforward however it's gonna take time to get this thing dissected 100%.

In the original post I was referring to the diameter of the coil, not the wicking. I'm sorry I didn't specify that buddy.

When I first built that coil I was going for surface area and ended up with this....
142tpnd.png

Once wicked I realized that this wasn't gonna work because the cotton was getting chocked on each side, from coil to juice channels. I also learned that they made those juice holes with that diameter most likely with the intention of people having big diameter coils in there. So I've done what at first seemed like an impossible thing to do and unwrapped one wrap, stretched it vertically (if that makes sense) and it kind of opened up, allowing me to reinsert a 3.8mm in there and kind of "rewrap" it to match the juice holes. I ended up with this....
1zd7jb6.png

And a prettier picture....
120kq41.png

Sorry it looks a bit sloppy but that was my very first attempt at hand wrap helixing something like this.

The wicks were just covering the holes but not going down to the bottom of the tank. I took that picture after I saturated the lights out of it and you can see that it's holding a ton of juice. I thought I was golden at that point. But no. Still wasn't wicking super fast.

Yes I know what you mean by compression within a coil and having "long thins" may not be enough of a "road" so to speak to get the juice up to the coil.

Hopefully this helps you guys see where I'm coming from and what grounds I've covered so far.

I haven't built yet cause I got a headache but I'll pop something out soon, just trying to figure out if maybe I should play with wicking this one more or not.

Head is hurting. Took 3 advil earlier. Then drank coffee thinking maybe it's caffeine withdrawal. Then 2 tylenol. Bisz still hurts. So I can't be bothered with braiding right now or doing a helixed zipper. So I put the other alien in this, wider diameter 3mm, sitting at a very solid .33ohms. Somewhat spaced, low as a lowrider to the deck. Here's some pics...

25f16c0.png

And after firing....
2cdegiq.png

Gonna wick it as I originally did, saturate it. Take a pic, vape it, report back with results and how pictures how it's behaving.
