Those thinking about Windows versions should keep in mind that Windows 10 will be free of charge if you're running Windows 8. Nice!
I have Win 7 on the broken down desktop, but the Lappy is fairly new so had Win 8 (or is it Win Hate) on it.
From what I've read earlier today in a newsletter, W10 will be free for a year or more for 8 users initially, and 7 later.
I hope to if I can find a decent repair
shop, I have a
shop just round the corner but I wouldn't trust him to repair this one. Think it needs a new CPU, heatsink and possibly the fan (liquid cooled) replacing, so might be a couple of hundred squids. will have to go googling, it's quite a heavy monster as well, so has to be within a quick taxi ride as well

If it's not something you could do yourself, there may be one or two that would know of a reliable repairer.
and if you have Win 7 as well, and the Classic Shell I installed is already compatible with the latest beta version of Win 10
The company I buy my computers from are testing it, and just a couple of weeks ago, he told me there's things to iron out, but it should be better by the time it gets released.
They have only just stopped win 98 support. They tell you they're gonna stop supporting win 7 so you will buy the new version.
I haven't bought win 7 just downloaded a copy and it works exactly as it should. If they design naked windows with no media player, games, IE, and mail program I would probably buy but I don't want their program's forced on me or left unused taken up space.
I'm the same with mobile phones. Every network forces their own program's on to it, not for me. Root them and take it all off or install new software as small as possible.
I do resent the way we're forced to stop using old O/S's - we bought them, so should be able to use them for as long as they suit our needs. Hardly things costing a few £'s, so like decent electronics items, you expect spares/service to be available for many years. In the newsletter I got today, these words struck a chord:
Microsoft wants all Windows devices to run its new cross-platform operating system, including even game consoles and its latest augmented reality headset. The recently unveiled early version of Windows 10 is its latest attempt to bridge the gap between desktop and mobile operating systems. The new platform for phones, tablets and PCs will be available free for at least a year for anyone upgrading from Windows 8.1 and later on for those using Windows 7. At the last count, less than one tenth of the world's desktops were running Windows 8.1. More than half were on Windows 7 and almost a quarter were still getting along quite happily, thanks all the same, with Windows XP.
So they do want everything running on the same system to suit their own agenda, and those statistics prove that many are reluctant to take up such as W8.
I changed away from vista only because I was ready to do a reformat which I do now and then so I get a perfectly clean system, and my brother had been using win7 for a while and recommended it. Just wish it was an operating system with no program's added.
Which programmes Dave? I don't recall there being much on mine when I got it.
