You're getting caught up on large #s thinking that big # = too much.

Let me ask you this, do you know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, how many milliGRAMS of nicotine one of your preferred brand of cigarettes has in one cigarette?
It’s starting to make more sense now took me a while

It's Really Not.

Because (here comes a One Way Ticket to MORE Confusion - LOL) the way Nicotine Level of e-liquids is Measured is by Total Nicotine per Milliliter. Whereas the way Nicotine is Measured in Regular Cigarettes is How Much Nicotine is Absorbed into the Average Person when they Smoke 1 Cigarette.

So if you Vaped 1/2 of your 10ml Bottle of 9mg/ml e-liquid, you would consume 45mg of Nicotine. But you Don't Absorb it all. You maybe Absorb 25 ~ 40% depending on what type of Hardware you use.

So by Regular Cigarette Standards, you would be Absorbing about 11 ~ 18mg of Nicotine. And that's pretty much inline with someone who Smokes about 8 ~ 12 or so Regular Cigarettes per day.

But Here's the Thing... It Isn't so much the Nicotine that Makes Cigarettes Harmful. It's the Tar and the Cornucopia of Chemicals that are Formed when Tobacco is Burned. That and all those Wonderful other Chemicals that Cigarette Makers put into Tobacco and the Paper.

So I Wouldn't worry about Vaping 5ml's of 9mg/ml per Day If that's what it Takes to Not Smoke Cigarettes.

ETA:

Many people when they Switch from Regular Cigarettes to Vaping tend to consume More Nicotine per day then they did when they Smoke.

This is Very Common.

Because as I mentioned, e-Cigarettes Doesn't Contain any Tar or the Chemicals found in Tobacco Smoke. And those Chemicals can be just as Addictive as any Addiction to Nicotine. So people tend to Vape More when they Switch because they Aren't getting what they used to.

And Vaping More can Mentally make up for it until you are Past Regular Cigarettes.

Small advice?
Forget about the numbers, don't try to calculate and sub the 15 cigs you had a day to whatever you vape now.
Dropped the cigarettes? awesome, that is the best and hardest part.now it's just a matter of time to find whatever amount of nic or device is more suited to your needs.

So forget about the numbers, percentages and cig to vape ratio it will just stress you out,for now just try to get thru the day without a cigarette...each day without one is an acomplishment in it's own right.

I was a 1 and half to sometimes 2 pack smoker a day since i was 19 (45 now),this last november was my 2 year anniversary vaping wise, haven't had a cigarette since.

Trust me it is worth it,just get your nicotine dosage right for now and that will do,got more than enough time to delve into the more complex side of vaping in the future.
Thank you wow 2 years your doing great I’m only on day 12 smoke free, I’ve got a lot to learn

It's OK. Just reread again if you start getting confused again. It's not hard, it's just new (to you). And getting caught up in 'how much is too much" isn't going to make much of a difference in your journey (you'll find that out soon enough).

Thanks, yeah it has been a voyage.

But don't worry about the learning, with time you may get into it and start to read and comment on different atomizers, mods, setups etc or maybe not but either way now you gotta stick to the basics.

1 step program:

Find the correct amount of nicotine so you don't feel the need for a cigarette.

^^
That's it,nothing more nothing less.
Once you done with step 1 you can go down into the rabbit hole of the vaping world hehe

Just in case my point about my step 1 program didn't come across i will let Shia LaBeouf motivate you better than me:

The whole e-Cigarette thing can Confusing when you are New. But You are Doing Fine.

And If You're Not Smoking, You are Doing it Right!

Just Drink a little more Water than Normally. Get a little More Exercise than you used to. And make sure to get enough Kick Back/Relax Time.

You're doing fine Melly!
Things are confusing because they are new and not what you are use to.
Your body and mind are also fighting you somewhat due to the detoxing from cigarettes.
This can take weeks or even months.

Here is what you need to do:
Breathe!
Drink more water (if you can)
Think "Vape" instead of smoke
Keep to your normal times that you used for smoking
Don't worry about how much you vape, for now.
Put the vape down if you start to get nauseous or dizzy or a sudden headache.
Relax if you do get those symptoms, they are normal if you over vape (and were normal when you started smoking...)

I've been doing this for over 8 years now, from 36 years of smoking 2 + packs a day for most of it.
The 1st month was the hardest for me, but I never looked back!

Good luck! Ask questions when you need to, and Welcome to the ECF!!

Welcome to ECF, Melly!

ECF is a very friendly group of vapers and you will find all the help you need to stay off the cigarettes. If you feel the urge to smoke while you are learning about vaping, don't worry about it. Many of us dual used as we learned to vape. I smoked when I started to vape and found that the urge to smoke began to lessen pretty quickly. At the 3 month point I was still smoking a few cigarettes a day , mostly after meals and with coffee, but I was vaping mostly. One day, I decided not to buy another pack and just vape. I did that and after a couple of days I threw away my last pack of cigs. I haven't had a cigarette since early 2009.

Find a juice that you really like and the transition is much easier. Most vape shops have juice bars where you can try different flavors to see what suits you. They give you a drip tip and you just move it from tank to tank on the juice bar as you try different juices. You will probably find several that you like.

Bingo. You are overthinking this. When I quit (cigs) I vaped 18 mg/ml about 3 ml a day. You can do all the math if you want, but vape as much as you need (at first... just don't smoke) if you are approaching 100 mg nic per day, then you might be overdoing it. You will know... we call it "nic sick" ... if you fell that just back off or reduce your nic level. One really good option is to have two devices (or tanks) so you have a choice when you need it... one stronger, one weaker ;)

Welcome to ECF, Melly12313. I can't really say any more than what everybody else in this thread has already said. I agree with everything that's been said, especially using 12 mg/ml juice. What I will say though that has sorta already been mentioned is about combining juice: if you mix together two equal amounts of juice, add both nic mg/ml amounts and divide by 2. So if you were to mix together 10mls of 18 mg/ml (nic amount) juice and 10 mls of 9 mg/ml, you would have 20mls of 13.5 mg/ml (nic amount) juice. That is a bit higher but still close enough to a 12 mg/ml juice. That's something that was explained to me by someone here years ago.

Again, welcome to the forums here. You've made a great decision to quit smoking cigarettes.

    Welcome to e.c.f

I vape six months now and I am never going back to cigs...

People here know vaping very good and the advices they gave help me learned things I wouldn't learn other way...

Give your mind and your body a little time to get used to quiting nasty cigs and adjust to vaping and all gonna be fine...

Hi Melly and welcome. Im also a new member and I can tell you the people here are great and will help you any way they can :)

That said, I started vaping less than a year ago. I started with 6mg nicotine but that was too low for me, then on advice from friend I switched to 16-18mg and it was great. I smoked about a pack a day for 12 years of plain old winston blue before. I still sometimes get cravings and I'll buy a pack and it will last me a month. The hardest thing for me however was the comments I got from people who didn't know what vape is and still try to lecture me. Once i got over that it was great :)

The best advice I can give you is get yourself something simple (Innokin Zlide Tube worked great for me, you just turn it on and vape, only thing to adjust is airflow, IMHO it's great for beginners).
Second, like someone already said, don't compare cigarettes with vape. I tried that too, read a lot of guieds, and the best advice I got is still TRY and see what works for you. You can get some useful pointers, but in the and it's about what you like.
And lastly, figure out what flavour you like. A lot of people say you should go with tobacco flavour first, makes transition easier. It didn't work for me (might work for you, try it). I found out I like sweet flavours, the added bonus was that cigarettes started to taste really terrible after vaping so it made it even easier to switch.

So go find a good online shop (someone from your country can recommend something, I'm sure, just ask) and start looking at juices. Pick a few different flavours with different nic strength, don't worry about overdosing, and then start trying. Pick one fruity flavour, one sweet, one tobacco, that way you can figure out what you like.

Also, nobody seemd to ask, but what is pg/vg content of your juice? It could be you don't tolerate one of these. General advice seems to be to try 50/50 first and then work from there (pg=more flavour, vg=bigger clouds). Maybe watch out for this too, you could have some intolerance or allergy.

I hope I didn't confuse you even more and enjoy your vaping :)

Very helpful thank you I didn’t know anything about pg/vg how to I find out what my product contains?

With vaping, you can generally start to tell when you're overdoing the nicotine. You will start to feel edgy and possibly get a headache and possibly like you're on the verge of nausea. If that happens back off. I say this because I did that... haha! It only happened once and after that, I was able to tell my limits but I started at a higher nic than you are but most likely a lower-powered device.

I like to drip high nic juice (24mg high octane :D) in the mornings with my cup of coffee, strictly for the nic buzz I got with cigs. After 10-15 hits I'm good. Then it's 6mg juice for the rest of the day.

The only way you will know what is right for you is to experiment. You will know when it's right.
