I don't want to stir up concern, I'm just uninformed and need some help if anyone has any information to put my mind at ease. I'm not concerned so much about myself, but I worry that if I promote the use of ecigs to friends and family that I may be putting them at some kind of risk. I generally feel, like most, that vaping reduces harm compared to cigarettes, but I don't feel comfortable enough with what I know just yet about whether this is a good habit to pick up, regardless of it's "safety" compared to cigs.

CDC - Flavorings-Related Lung Disease: Exposures to Flavoring Chemicals - NIOSH Workplace Safety and Health Topic

I've seen concerns about diacetyl in eliquid flavorings. I haven't kept up though, I remember people being concerned a couple years ago. I think most vendors address this right? Is this old news and squashed? Do we know anything else about other components of flavoring?

"Toxicology studies have shown that vapors from heated butter flavorings can cause damage to airways in animals (Hubbs et al, 2002). Studies in both rats and mice demonstrate that the cells lining airways can be damaged by inhaling diacetyl vapors as a single agent exposure in both acute and subchronic studies (Hubbs et al, 2008; Morgan et al, 2008). In mice, aspiration of diacetyl alone caused a pattern of injury that replicates some of the features of human obliterative bronchiolitis (Morgan et al, 2008). These findings support the hypothesis that diacetyl vapors are an inhalation hazard in the workplace. Also, a study from the Netherlands shows that chemical workers in a plant that manufactured diacetyl developed the same type of lung disease as microwave popcorn workers (van Rooy et al, 2007 and 2009). These chemical workers had less complicated exposures than microwave popcorn workers. Overall, current evidence points to diacetyl as one agent that can cause flavorings-related lung disease. Other flavoring ingredients may also play a role."

What about other components of flavoring. Does anyone have any information about this. Thanks.

Sometimes I worry, and I contemplate vaping unflavored. :glare:

Has anyone ever seen the way animals are abused in testing?
I have. At one time they actually showed studies thinking people would learn from them. What I learned way back then is if you trap something living in a toxin filled box eventually it will die. i.e. simulate 100+ cigs. all at once in a Shoebox sized plexiglass tank.
And just how large are a mouses lungs anyway?

Not knocking research, it is a necessary evil and eventually some good comes from most. But remember when reading Documents reflecting studies from a completely different research project, a grain of salt is needed.
Key Words in the information WORK PLACE. Not a minute sample diluted in a large quantity of PG/VG but a constant exposure to high concentrates day after day 40hrs+ per week.
Example - Coal Dust to a Coal miner as opposed to someone Heating with a coal stove.

rounding third and heading home...
I just take the tactic that we KNOW Diacetyl is bad for lungs in the factory setting. I personally don't want to risk it. You are of course free to make your own choice.

some reputable vendors won't even say what their pg/vg ratio is never mind what else is in their product- the only true way would be to test every bottle and no one can do that. just have to go on faith, but surely it has to better than smoking. hope so-besides I enjoy it too much.....

Also, if money is weighing down on one side of research(in the case of e-cig's this is a definite), you need to know what animal is in the documentation. Different animals have different research potentials. Fruit flies in genetics/mutations, mice in muscles, etc...

The vendor I currently only use displays VG/PG content, the brands of VG/PG, and the type of flavoring used.
