FLOSS (Open Source Projects) around vaping. Which projects are still active in 2024 and have a big user community?

Hi

Happy 2024 to all

I searched the forum for GitHub and found a lot of links to code that is no longer maintained.
In some cases, the last commits were 4-10 years ago.
Are there any active Open Source projects on vaping? Is there even a custom firmware that is Open Source with a large community?
Can someone give me an overview of Open Source and vaping?

Or are there no more such projects and are we dependent on proprietary manufacturers?

I did a web search and found a few projects, but didn't understand exactly what they are and what they are for.

I don't know of any that are active, unfortunately. The various (and sadly often proprietary) chipsets must complicate things, but still.

The only one I'm aware of is by NFE Team. They stopped development recently but download links are still accessible. They made NFE Tools, ArcticFox, and Red Panda, a software utility, custom firmware, and custom firmware for mods with color screens respectively. All of which are FOSS as far as I know, which is wonderful. The software is known to allow you to have an extremely customizable vape with robust temperature control, mostly for older Picos and other devices with the same chipset like Wismec and Joyetech devices (and limited early dev builds for other chipsets). In effect, until recently you could get a $20 Pico, setup NFE Tools and ArcicFox and wind up with DNA like performance at a fraction of the cost.

I actually bought a couple old Picos so I could try it out before they disappear. (Arctic Fox compatible Picos are getting difficult to find.)

edit: here's the manual if you're interested. I have the files as well if anyone needs them.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There's FOSS android app, a DIY juice calculator, that I know of. You can find the app on the Fdroid repository and the source code on Codeberg. I've only recently discovered it but have never used it so I have no idea if it's any good at what it's supposed to do.

I would expect there isn't much more going on pertaining to vape in the FOSS arena that is vaping related. In terms of software, we have all we need via online apps like juice and calculators as well as some PC based. But also because years ago vapers were more interested in making stuff due to necessity. But today, because the market has matured the consumers in that market get lazy and become slaves to convenience, which is what happens to any market when it matures.

As an example, there used to be a lot of talk about making mods in this forum but today you'd be hardpressed to get a decent convo going about DIYing mods here, you'd have to find a specialty forum for that, if there is one. The only DIY that held somwhat strong is DIY ejuice, but that's because juice is very expensive and making your own saves a vaper a lot of money and just about anyone can do it if they have a mind to (not the case with hardware which requires higher level of specialized skills). But that is and always will be a small niche in the market since convenience is king.

As far as software, as was mentioned there was Arctic Fox firmware but that wan't FOSS as it wasn't an open source project as far as I know. It was merely free. And the main reason that project went belly up is likely because they became disinterested in expaning it and the mods that it was designed for are all discontinued.

They have a github repo but I think you're right.

Seems like it was open source at one point (and old source code is still on git), but all the newer releases moved to their website, and it appears the code was no longer shared afterwards.
