Hi,

I just can't get this thing to work right....I'm using an AW IMR 18650 2000mah better. My coil is 8 wraps of 28 gauge kanthal and is about 1 ohm.

I am using CVS Sterile rolled cotton for my wick and it just tastes either awful, muted or burned.

I have tried using various amounts of cotton, I roll it and make sure it fits loosely through the coil, snip the ends and tuck them around the posts. I'll squonk, get the cotton saturated and it'll taste like cotton for the first few vapes which is fine, but the flavor never really gets any better.

It'll work OK for maybe 3-4 drags and then just turns to crap! I can't even take more then 2 vapes off it without having to squonk again and getting a burnt/dry taste.

What the hell am I doing wrong? All I want is for it to taste as good as my HH 357...or any atomizer for that matter.

Can you take a pic of your coil? Helps to see.

Coil placement has a lot to do with flavor and vapor.

You mention that you tuck your cotton around the posts. The cotton should not stick out very much from the ends.

Make sure your coil is towards the air hole. Closer to it than the posts.

Watch as you squonk and see that the juice covers the coil to saturate the wick.

Perhaps you could upload a picture of your build to help us out?

However; at least with me I've found I have to "squonk" before each hit with the RM2. Perhaps you are burning your cotton by not squonking enough?

Also, are you sure you are "priming" the cotton with enough juice and letting it sit awhile before firing?

Don't worry; you will get this thing down and it will be awesome.

Thanks,

Norman

I'm seeing a darker spot to the right if the coil, which is pretty much always a sure sign of a hot spot. Before you thread the cotton make sure you get rid of hot spots either by doing the heat-then-press with tweezers or needle nose pliers (super_x has a great vid on how he builds micro coils if someone can post that) or whatever method you use to deal with hot spots.

I'm fairly certain the trouble you're having is due to that hot spot.

My coil lines up almost perfectly with the air hole....pictures of the current coil and wick..

Less cotton. Coil in relation to juice hole is good.

Your coil shows darkening. That makes me think you are not getting the cotton inside the coil wet enough. With a 1 ohm coil it will get really hot and burn off juice quick. That will lead to loss of flavor, or burnt flavor.

Might consider moving it towards the side of the RM2 just a little.

Make sure you are waiting a few seconds after a squonk before you vape.

Plus, as Ahreekeeteekee said above; you might want to take that wick out and take care of the coils. If you do it with something like needle-nose pliers just be sure to fire to make the coils hot/pliable, let off fire button while pressing coils closer together; repeat 'til you have an evenly distributed glow.

Thanks,

Norman

that could also be the spot where you're cotton is burning . . .. where your coil dries out the soonest. Like mentioned before, since the RM2 drains back all the excess, you are going to have to squonk every vape or 2. Also, make sure to squonk and hold the squeeze for about a 3 count (5 count on a 1/2 empty juice bottle). You want to peek in there (sans drip tip) and see the juice rise up around the coil, and then recede after you let go of the squonkerdoodle.

Thanks everyone..new coil and wick are setup, came out to 1.05 ohms.

It seems to be vaping OK so far...flavor still sucks, its so muted and tastes nothing like my HH357, its so muted.

My wick is already getting a little brown and I squonked before every vape and watched it pool up...

How close to the bottom plate is the coil?

I still think you could get the coil closer to the edge of the RM2. Longer legs would do it.

I go for 4-5 vapes before I need to squonk. That is with cotton in a 1.0 coil.

How hard is your hit? Maybe try a little slower hit and easier.

You should be getting lots of flavor in the RM2. We just need to figure out what will fix this for you.

You can get much better flavor from moving the coil much closer to the airhole.

Also, I don't subscribe to the theory of as little cotton as possible :) I seem to get boatloads of flavor with boatloads of cotton. Yarn in this case.

So, both lowering the coil and getting it closer to the edge will improve flavor at cost of throat hit.

Coil doesn't look bad. One problem is definitely that you are using too much cotton. I don't subscribe to the really loose cotton wick method. Wet your fingers and get a nice dense wick. Pull it through the coil until it sticks a little bit and then cut off the cotton just outside the coil, so that just a tiny bit protrudes outside the coil. Those long tails don't help. It's counter-intuitive, but that's the way it works, for me anyway. The juice will get up and hit the wick and coil; trust me. If your wick hangs off the ends and hits the deck, all sorts of performance factors will suffer. Dry hits, flooding / drainage issues being the main ones. I don't experience having to squonk with every drag. If I were to do that, I would flood. with a little bit of experience, you will be able to tell when your wick is starting to go dry. I find if I have a solid coil that I can tell just by the sound the coil makes. When it begins not crackling a little bit, time for a fresh juice squonk.

Also, I know this sounds like an idiot check, but it's something that I don't check often enough - make sure your screws are tight. Using 28g wire makes for awesome coils, but it also has a tendency to make it difficult to get your screws tight and to keep them that way. I went to re-wick today and realized that my screws had backed out over the course of the last day or so. It was still performing OK, but once tightened, I was getting the big flavor and clouds that I like.

So, with the HH357 instruction manual, it says to suck really hard (basically). What I'm gonna suggest is that you have more airflow here, and you want less (and you want to suck that smaller air hole really hard). This actually would increase flavor. Since, however, I doubt you'll be smallerizing your airhole, your other ingredient for baking that cake is to go lower res. on your build and suck the existing airhole harder. Try .7Ω. (trust me)

2 things I found critical on my first 2 builds - coil position right in front of the air hole - I found it best to be real close without touching the cap. 2nd thing is short tails on the wick and don't pack it too tight or the juice won't make it inside the coil - just like pesky said, a tight, slightly tapered cotton pulled through the hole just until you feel a little resistance and then cut it off. If the tails reach the posts they're too long. Find the super-x-drifter clip, it's one of the best examples only I found I get better results with the coil closer to the air hole than what he shows in the clip.

That's just what works for me - you'll get it. It's awesome when you do!
