Cool_Breeze I ran it ultrasonically for around 10 minutes with hot tap water. It came out still blackish & carbonized looking from a from a distance

But the close up image(same as the one in my previous post)

& a hand magnifier told me recarbonize & VG burn that mesh to be safe. Sadly DERP, I forgot to get images close up after recarbonization

Set up a "hybrid wick" tonight. Rolled and oxidized a short SS mesh wick, wrapped a coil with 32g Kanthal - 2.1ohm. Installed this like the 'factory wick'. Rolled two cotton batting wicks, inserted one cotton wick in each wick hole and 'draped' the end of each cotton wick over the corresponding end of the SS mesh wick.

Pics and a video (click on video pic to play):

I had continued using the straight SS mesh wicked SRT after putting this one together; but got tired of all the flooding. I've been using the cotton/mesh wicked SRT since last night and not a bit of flooding. I'm really liking this set up. Of course when I try to replicate it, I'm sure it won't work again like this  The wicking ability of the cotton and the durability of the SS mesh seems a match made in heaven, you know, like peanut butter and chocolate.

Another option for SS mesh wicks is a SS/cotton 'hybrid' wick - Mesh/Cotton hybrid wick Bluegrasslover's method - YouTube

Hey Tom - I'm still not happy with the performance of my SS wick modded tank so I tried this "hybrid" idea. As far as eliminating any shorts it works perfectly and it's easy to do as well, but I'm still not getting hardly any vapor and the taste is still a little funky as in burning rubber or something similar. I have no idea where this could be coming from as there is no rubber or plastic touching the coils or wick. I've gone through at least a couple of tank fulls total ( 1 before "hybrid" and another after). And have checked for any hot legs that could be burning the juice and have verified that the SS wick is not touching the center post.

I made my mod by drilling out one of the original wick holes on an angle toward the center post. Like this pic shows that someone else posted in here. After converting the SS wick into a "hybrid" I'm getting a solid/steady 2.4 ohms on it. Before filling with juice I verified all the coils glowed perfectly uniform and no hot leads.

I have even plugged the other wick hole (top hole in above pic) with a tooth pick to see if that would help. Still no luck. I never closed off the bottom air hole on the bottom of the 510 connection as it works fine on any PV I have put it on including my Provari. Air flow seems about right and not restricted.

Any idea as to what is wrong? I've read so many great things from everyone about these SS wicks and how great the flavor is but I'm about to give up and just keep sucking on my silica wicked Vison's if I can figure this out. :(

Hmmm, strange. Not sure what it could be - although with bluegrasslover's hybrid wick, you shouldn't dry burn. The cotton is there to keep the coil from actually touching the SS wick. Was the cotton you used 100% cotton? Some 'cotton' may contain artificial fibers.
Check Post #622 above, I've been having good luck with this set up.

Vapspaz - you may have a short. I see 8 wraps in your picture. Using TomCatt PV Calc (highly recommended) at 32GA you should be a little higher in ohms (~3.0). That burnt rubber taste may be overheated mesh at the short between two coils...burning juice...

BTW, this is all a guess b/c I don't know your wire gauge etc.... but I would look toward the lower coils for the problem.

Damn.... Sorry about that. My brain slipped back while I was typing. lol
What I meant to type was after making the "hybrid" I verified that it didn't have any hot spots by putting some juice on it and firing to make sure juice vaporized across the entire coil and while doing that, I didn't see the leads glow. Before I yanked my original one apart I did fire that one just to make sure the coils glowed evenly.

The lack of "good" flavor and the funky taste is exactly the same as before when I just had the SS wick without any cotton so I know the cotton isn't the problem. But yes, I used 100% cotton balls. Also, I've been vapping for over 2 years now and mainly use just one particular juice 99% of the time so I have a REAL good idea what it taste like when it burns. This funky taste isn't the juice burning.

I did read your 622 post and it looks pretty sweet. I figured that I need to get the basic concept down and figured out before I try anything new though. lol Will that work with cotton from cotton balls?

I've been reading a few other threads about other mods like the "Dud" thread and I noticed a lot of talk about the air flow and how critical it is. Do you think maybe Air flow or the lack there of might be causing this? I'm using the original air hole located directly below the coil and did not solder the bottom shut. The draw doesn't feel too tight and it's not to "airy".

Cotton balls will work for my setup. I use cotton batting (basically the same as cotton balls), just pull & twist the cotton from the cotton ball to make a wick.
And I'm using the original air hole also.
That's a puzzler as to where the off taste is coming from. No more ideas from here.

Good Luck and let us know if you find out what's happening there.

That photo is not mine, I found it in this thread several pages back. I just used it to give a general idea of what I have done so far with this set-up. I'm actually using 34 ga Nichrome wire with 5 coils. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm going to take another close look at it and see if I can find any hot spots. But I know it's not burning juice that I taste. God knows I've been there done that enough times over the past 2 years. LOL
