BJ43,

You have eagle eyes. I needed to go back to my higher res picture, zoom in 200% and put on my reading glasses to see that. On inspection, you were spot on with the shorts under the curve. I suspected that earlier, but was gun shy on moving the coils around. I was able to get 3.2 ohms with some fixes, but the curve needed to be flattened to eliminate the wire touch. I lost coil shape with too much wire adjusting trying get the curve back. (I need to develop my coil skills...) I would have attached a picture, but things got a little ugly....

So I am now onto round 2 with a bit more care and proper break-in. Thanks.

With 34g you can get a 2.5 ohm with 5/6 wraps and that should be easier to start with.

Ok so I am on round 2 here on the 1/0 cotton u-wick , I am out of 34ga kanthal and now using 32ga. This time I used a double twist on the 32ga at the tails. I got ~6 coils and 3ohms.

I was very careful to ensure that no wires over lap, I got a nice curve for wicking and.....it still has this overwhelming throat hit! WTF?

This has been the most frustrating experience. I just did a dual coil 1/0 cotton wick mod on a vivi nova in 20 minutes, and that beats anything I have vaped in the last two months. including SS mesh. In fact, while I am setting the smoketech up here, I am switching out to the modded Vivi Nova, just for some sanity.

Sorry for the rant... I think I may just move onto SS for this unit. Quigstick here I come.

Some Pics on the setup, let me know if I missed something. I may be more rational in the morning. Appreciate any thoughts on this.

Just curious, don't know how much of a difference it would make seeing as how your rebuilt vivi nova is doing fine, how are you measuring the resistance of your coils? I have one multimeter that has an internal resistance of 0.4 ohms; another with 0 ohms. If you're using a multimeter, touch the leads together to get any internal resistance - this will need to be subtracted from any coil measurements.

TomCatt - The multimeter is good, no internal resistance.
Saltnpepper - It wasn't Nic content, I ran an ml of no-nic, no flavor 50/50 PG/VG through the wick, no difference.

I went for round three...here is what I did:

IMAG0064a.jpg

I took BJ43's advice and set up with 5 wraps. I got 2.6ohm..(32ga Kanthal, 1/0 cotton wick). I also switch the pole spacer to the center.

and......it worked! :D No more weird TH.

Looking back at the other two set ups (besides my shorting problem), I think that the issue may have been that the coils in the first two versions were sitting way too high in the chamber and too close to the drip tip opening. I was getting a nice draw, but maybe it messed with the air mixing dynamic?

Much thanks to all....

Where's the best/cheapest/quickest place to get a few sheets of 400 ss mesh at, I've got 4 of these tanks, and while they aren't BAD, per se, with the silica wicks, I know they can be much better. The silica just doesn't wick quick enough for me, honestly, and all it takes is 1 bad hit to fry the back of my throat for 20 minutes. Thought about trying a double wick in one until I can get some mesh, thoughts? And is a genny type mesh setup a good idea for a chain vaper? I like to rip off about 10 hits in a row, will mesh wick that fast?

This isn't the cheapest source for mesh, but it is a great site with great customer service, and shipping will be quick:
Stainless Steel Mesh 400 - $4.99 : Stormys Vapor Cellar, Electronic Cigarettes & More

An SS mesh wick will definitely keep up with chain vaping. It helps if you roll a thin-walled wick with a large hole (like a little straw), but even small holed mesh wicks work well. It helps to hold your PV horizontally or almost horizontally, as well.

Good luck!

X2... I tend to chain vape as well, which is why I've had horrible luck with any CE2-style silica wick. The SS mesh wick handles my vaping pace very well. Yes, I have received a dry hit from time, which I chalk up to two things: 1) learning how to draw (it makes a difference), and 2) wick break-in. The good news is, these dry hits are only slightly dry and no where near the throat-searing, hair-burning taste you get from silica wicks.

Good luck!

Got my tanks today. Also got a couple clearos as a side contest prize from the co-op  as I popped my last clearo a couple of days ago.
I can see why some are having problems out of the box. The one I opened had a badly formed coil; the ends were off the wick, the coils themselves were misshaped and too large for the wick.
I removed the silica wick, straightened the coils up some and threaded a rolled cotton wick through everything. Not the ideal setup, but good for a trial run. Seems to be working ok even with this quick and dirty setup. I'll play some more this weekend fer sher. :D

OK I got my tanks today and actually rolled a 400 mesh small enough to use the existing holes. The throat hit is decent but not much vapor. I'm asuming that will get better?????????

UPDATE, lol.
Made a slight adjustment on the coil. I think the top leg to the pos post was a little long. Shortened it up and cut of about 1/8 inch of the top of the coild and WOW What a difference, lol Not great yet but usable till it gets worked in some.

Well nothing lasts forever, lol. Went to change the coil to see if I could improve the TH, but it started shorting out again. The second tank shorts right away.

Just an observation, and I could be wrong. But,from the photos,it looks like the wick is setting on the bottom plate.Could be causing your shorts????

It shouldn't matter if it sits on the bottom plate if the coil is not shorting to the wick, current wise it doesn't matter but it could restrict the capillary action thru the small center hole of the wick. Same goes that it is not necessary to oxidize the part of the wick that goes thru the top. If the setup is correct the coil is isolated from the wick and no current transfers from the coil to the wick and therefore no completed circuit.

thank you BJ43...IDK where I read that it would make a difference, but now I know better...all a feller has to do is jump into a conversation around here, and he gets himself a free education...:)
