I had an original copy of Rick Wakemans journey to the center of the earth, in quadrophonic sound. I loaned it to a buddy that had a quadrophonic sound system and wanted to experience it with a real quad recording, I never saw it again, and found out it sold for upwards of 100 or more depending on condition.

I love this conversation.

How did religion or politics dictate tonality or any specific musical expression? Would any pope or king have enough musical knowledge or talent to dictate anything in that field? Can the hands of genius be tied?
Definitely. To this day, our taste (Western music) dates directly back. What pleases us, what we dance to, our concept of harmony and melody is that history. For example once upon a time it was a *sin* to compose music in a minor key. Some guy in a pointy hat modified that along the way and decided it was okay as long as you ended it with a major chord. Bach dug that. Plagel cadence.
Western music history was one of my main gigs in my seven year degree-less college career. ;)

Did anyone see the story of the little girl in England, a Mozart-esque prodigy? Fantastic. But I was also very sad, she is already filled with our preconceptions and I found myself hoping she realizes the freedom she has someday. I know this makes me sound like a cold hearted summ..... but I would lock her in a room with every musical instrument and every cultural music from history and around the world, all presented equally. See what she comes up with.

Thanks for sharing...It's good to see that your 7 years of college has finally paid off...I think we all learned something today...
I can't seem to write anything that doesn't sound patronizing...
