German silica Kevlar

Hi everyone,

I was looking at some silica wicks and I came across this site that sells German silica Kevlar. What's surprising to me is that I didn't know German silica is the same as Kevlar.

Does anyone have experience working with this wick?

Allegedly GP uses German 2mm silica wick. I've used the stuff GP supplies with their attys and it is very nice, wicks extremely well, and doesn't fray much at all when cut. Not sure if it is actually German, or if the German wick in your link is the same. I'm not sure I've ever seen Perseas (from GP) post definitively where it comes from specifically or a brand name or manufacturer. Anyhow, rumor has it German wick is the bomb.

German silica is NOT Kevlar, but the material you are referring to is fumed silica Kevlar, which is a treated Kevlar material used to improve stab resisting properties of Kevlar material. Good paper on the topic here:

Kevlar is in the same family as Nomex, a fire resistant synthetic fiber, which might also have some wicking applications.

So I'm still confused. So is it silica or is it Kevlar?
