Thanks, emonty.

But I've still been having leaks, with or without the o rings. Each time, it's fine at first. But after a couple of hours, it starts to seep, and the seepage turns into a leak. The leakage is coming from the air intake holes above the CR ring. Even though I love the simplicity and vaping characteristics of this device, the leaks have made it really damned annoying.

At the suggestion of SSRob and a few others, I have cut a ring of blue foam to fit around the four air holes of the brass base last night. I'm NOT going to say 'it seems to have worked' because a) the problem only shows itself after a couple of hours of vaping, and b) I'm convinced it's a jinx to say that. I've loaded the afs with some dark purple ejuice to make any seepage or leaks easier to see (I'm not wearing a suit today.).

So far, the blue foam doesn't effect taste and creates more vape volume at 3.7v. I would almost equate it to 6v vaping without the foam and orings. It tends to go dry a times, but a quick primer puff with the CR ring closed gives you ten or fifteen vapes with no problem.

As for leaking or seepage, I'll report back in a day or so.

I think the easiest way to make the ring is to take a knife and make a slit in a square of blue foam for the top of the brass base to slide into. Once the blue foam is around the holes of the brass piece, trace around the threads of the brass piece with a magic marker onto the foam. Remove the foam, cut around the tracing, and place back into the brass piece. Assemble afs per instructions.

So far, no leaks or seepage with the blue foam ring. Yea. Vape is increased a bit at 3.7, but taste is diminished just a bit with it.

On the GG forum, it is being suggested that for leaks without the blue foam disk I should either a) put the bottom o ring back on and leave the top one off, or b) make sure the brass base is screwed on especially tight.

When this tank is finished, I'll have to yank the plug, and try option 'b' again to see if this stops the leak, simply because I love the enhanced taste so much better.

Still no seepage or leaks.

But I was thinking about the explanation that they're caused by the brass base not being screwed in tightly enough. That could explain why they only happen after a few hours; repeatedly screwing the control ring up and down, along with the top cap during refiling could cause the brass base to come loose and start the leaks. Hmm....

Method Two: Imeo and Rob's suggestion

Both have stated either on the gg forum or on a PM that afs users who experience leaks can put the bottom o ring on the base and leave the top one off.

Took off the blue disk, reinstalled the bottom o ring, and filled tank halfway. Initially taste improved, and vape diminished. Okay, not a bad tradeoff.

Then both dropped off, and seepage started happening around the air inlets again. (Oh, HELL no!) Knowing where this was going, I poured my juice into an empty bottle and disassembled the AFS again.

Method Three: Vapnaway's tweak, revisited

Vapnaway, an acknowledged AFS expert, suggested that the leak around the air inlets could be caused by the brass base not sealing sufficiently around the o ring in the bottom of the tank. His suggestion was to remove the top and brass o rings, and to make sure the brass piece was on extremely (hand) tight.

Reassembled using this method, sans foam disk. Vape was roughly the same with the disk, but the taste improved drastically. :) No seepage or leaks yet, I'll keep my fingers crossed. But it was these vape and taste characteristics that made me fall in love with the AFS.

Random thought: reassembling an afs moistened by either juice or water can be tricky by it being slippery. I grabbed a thin, wet kitchen terry cloth towel to grip the tank and brass piece to make sure I was getting it as tight as I could by hand. I'm wondering if the leakage issue being reported by myself and others is cause by the units being slippery, and the solution could be something so universally available and inexpensive.

Wow, all i can say is wow. You make anything sound like gold Clyde. The AFS sounds like a great investment for anyone who wants to do away with their manual dripping. After reading this I know I will want one if I get the money.

Great info and well said!!! Thanks Clyde!!

PS: Clyde you could sell a ketchup Popsicle to an old lady in white gloves :) (you talk really well and could sell anything that you truly believe in... kudos ;) )

Thank you for the compliment.

The AFS is one of a few 3rd generation (my term for self juicing) vapes that I have the honor of playing with. Besides the convenience factor, what I really like about the good ones is taste-every puff tastes like the first puff after you drip or put a fresh cart on.

And every one of them has strengths and weaknesses in their design and construction, and these can be subjective to a degree. What I love about the AFS is when it's behaving right (i.e., not leaking or seeping) is the simplicity and reliability of the design. Hit the button and get a good tasty vape sans learning curve.

I had a couple of seepage issues yesterday, but no leaks. Right now, it is behaving perfectly as another low front, rain system is sweeping into Oklahoma. I wonder if a mod that uses o rings, gravity and air pressure can be effected by barometric pressure?

Today I'm going to fill the tank up again with some straight VG juice instead of my usual 80/20 blend and see if that helps with the seepage issue. My intuition tells me a thicker juice would seep less than a thinner blend. If that works, I'll try adding a shot of pure VG to my blend to see if that will reduce seepage and not effect taste.

Well, there's a nice long weekend coming up, and it may be time for a bit of geekery.

Emonty and a couple of other folks have been raving about using the kr808d-1 carto on the afsv2. Strip the wrapper, remove the glue, drill a 1.5 mm hole 8mm above the threads, and there ya go.

Never tried a carto before*, but its advocates have been raving about it on the afs. Liquid in the unit keeps the wadding perpetually wet, so no burning the filler. No need for adapter, since the carto will fit an 901 fitting, and users reporting good vape/TH on them for a week, even at HV. With no leaks. Having a supply of $2 or cheaper attys instead of $13 or more, sometimes unavailable, GG attys makes this mod a hell of a lot more attractive. No leaking even more so. At least I won't want to cry or curse if one of these goes cold.

Will get three cartos from VK today, and retired neighbor Joe with the fully stocked workshop across the street (God bless him) will help me with the hole drilling sometime this week or this weekend.

If this idea works out, I'll pop for a dremel to save a few bucks in the long run, or try the wholesale tool place down the street from my office for a cheaper alternative.

Imeo's stated that he's looking into custom cartos for the mod, but we'll see. Besides taking at least a month to get ready (probably more like three), the added cost and availability issues may make this less attractive than the DIY route.

Another leak proofing tip on the gg forum I haven't tried to is put a blue foam disc around the air inlet holes on the atty inside of the afs tank. My presumption is that this will alter the airflow/vape/taste on the mod like it did around the brass base air holes, so I view this too as a measure of last resort.

*Yeah, I know I'm late to this party. Have thought about trying them before, but why bother when you've got four or five self juicing mods sitting on your kitchen countertop?

I would love to have one of these but think I will wait until leaking stops, thanks to all for your reviews that a big help!

You're welcome. I think imeo will find a fix or update that will solve this for people that's not so jerry rigged. He'll probably incorporate the fix into the upcoming afs for the ggts.

There's a neighbor of yours up in Maine, Reo (or redeyedancer on ecf), who's doing some good work with this Reo wooden box mod. May want to check it out.

Hey Clyde, I can't afford the AFS yet but have been using the cartos on the GGTS at 7.4 v for about three months with great success. Be sure and try at least one unadulterated carto to let us know what you think and keep up the great reviews.

Carto on 7.4.....I tried it but only get burned taste, no flavor. the maximum to my taste is 6 volts, but then in the AFS to keep it really moist. Also on 5 volts with the pass through it works great. On 3.7 volts I use a little higher nic level to make it to my taste.

1. Waiting on 1st 3 cartos to arrive by usps today, check.

2. Ordered two five packs on sale at VK before Rob and Michelle take a weeks vacation, check.

3. Checked with pawn shop in my area for a quality, well priced dremel. Check.

4. Goo be gone under kitchen sink, check.

Emonty, your method says one hole on carto, imeo says two. Rebuttal?
