Why not some of the plastic/rubber 'tool dip' stuff? You dip a tool handle in it, let dry, it's now got a plastic/rubbery coating on it once dried?
I never even heard of that, Weg

.
They also sell it at lowes in the paint section
Golden color is very pretty!
I never even heard of that, WegIt would have to be a very thick coating and acid-proof, wouldn't it, so it wouldn't wear thru? My sweaty finger (or thumb, sometimes) is on the button most of the day 8-o

It should wear well enough, as long as like paint, the surface prep is decent - (alcohol, degreaser, no oils on surface to be coated).
Abrasion will of course, wear through nearly anything over time, but really, pull the button, remove the old, dip the outside of button again, let dry, and I'd wager you're good for another 'long while' again.
Anodizing is very likely more durable, but not so easy to redo yourself, and I'm unsure if it's even easily possible to anodize 'just the outside' of a button, etc.
Yes, clear is transparent.
Than clear is the color. For black, blue or red too me is not good.
