So what winders will allow us to apply tension? Probably been posted and I missed it--didn't see Superx address it specifically in his video.

We have one in the works. We're expecting the prototype in the next couple of weeks.

As of now, the gizmo, a pin vice type or home made deal are the only methods for applying enough consistent tension.

If the prototype is everything I think it will be, I would expect it to possibly be available thru atleast one vape gear reseller.

This is a little ways out, perhaps months and I'm not going to get into any supplier status. I like my freedom here on ECF, have a day job and no time to deal with sales.

I have a very qualified / connected partner in this deal who is working on the business / TM side of things.

I can't say more about it until it's time. If it doesn't do what we want it to do, I'll have a a fail that can double as a projectile :)

SX, if you have a success....where will you be announcing it? I assume on ECF, but which thread?

Also, I've watched your vid using the coil jig many times. What is that bit of material you use to hold down the Kanthal on your spool while winding? I suppose anything would work...but was that blue stuff just some packing material? Looks like it holds with just the right amount of "firmness" while still allowing the wire to feed off the spool. Just curious.

Dunno about announcements yet because it's in still its infantile stages of "is it gonna do what we want it to do?" Once we got that nailed comes the particulars of TMing it.

So my associate (Mac) and I (and others I hear) can then focus on the details on how / who would take over from there, cause, like I said, I'm not interested in being a seller. But I will make the vids :)

That blue stuff LOL - YEP, it's cut from a piece of computer packing.

I was using an eraser but it wears out and can leave rubber on your wire ;)

Thanks SX. I have a quick question for anyone who might be able to answer it. My understanding of the definition of "microcoil" is any coil with i.d. of 2mm or less. Tensioned microcoil is one that all coils are touching with enough tension to optimal flow of the electricity....in simplified terms.

My question is on coils greater than 2mm i.d., is there still benefit to having all the coils touch...and wrapping the coil with tension? I can't imagine why the benefits wouldn't apply to larger coils too?

Will the new winder have the ability to wrap larger diameter coils?

Here's a micro coil fact sheet. I never build larger or smaller so I can't help :)

The prototype will go up to 2mm. Providing it seems feasible to go up to 3 mm we will adjust :)

I was taught that the defining factor of a "micro coil" is that all its wraps touch. This property is what causes it to perform differently than other coils. There are differences of opinion in regard to the minimum ID required to qualify it as a micro coil., and I've seen different names given to coils that fall further outside standard ID measures... (nano, macro, etc). You bring up a good point though - a better name for the micro coil would be the "tension coil" since it does not necessarily have to be diminutive to perform well.

Um, yeah (like the boss on office space style). Unfortunately whomever misinformed you was incorrect. Here is the birth announcement :)

But don't feel bad, most people were misinformed by youtube celebs - your are not alone.

The micro coil was actually born in REOvil on a REO :)

Yeah...I wish I understood the theory behind how everyone chooses their preferred coil sizes, etc. I really understood the practicality of a microcoil for rebuilding a Kanger Protank due to the limits on size and constraints. Also, the mandrel size of 1/16 is perfect to set in the cup of the Kanger coil base.

Then, I bought a Lemo RTA....which has a huge build deck and tank....and most are recommending that I go bigger diameter on the coil for a larger wick for optimal performance. guess all I can do is try things out for myself to see what works. I really like using the micro coil jig on 1/16 though.

Not sure if this is the thread to discuss it but it seems we are on the topic of micro coil sizes and advantages. I am wondering if their application is best on all atomizers? I dunno.

Micro Coil for the RBA on your REO

Actually the "micro coil" as we know it today was introduced originally on a European site by a fellow who goes by the name of 'Happy Vaping' (also a Juicer). It is possible that it was reinvented a number of times in different geographical locations, but Happy Vaping's was around before the Reo... and well before the YouTube celebs. :)

He also has some things to say about the ID... but as I mentioned, the thing has evolved and there are lots of contributors at this point.

Interesting bit o' obscure history there. Ok, Let's just say the name micro coil and the my assignment of that name to the coil I made because of its small diameter was born in REOvil and has spawned one of the most viewed non- lounge / model specific threads on ECF :)

I never even heard of happy vaping before I made it or or even now for that matter nor was there any published stuff anywhere about "micro coils" prior to the threads here that I referenced :)

But I have only been at this a couple of short years so I missed out on a bunch of pioneering visionary stuff :)

Love the gizmo! I took the clamp off of mine and mounted it to a little piece of wood so I don't have to screw around clamping it the the kitchen table when I want to use it. Also stole SXD's idea of adding a screw/wingnut to the mandrel, but I used a nylon screw and drilled a little hole in it so I can stick the wire through the hole and tighten it down, kind of like on an atty post.

I guess it makes sense that more than one person would figure out to wrap a coil this way given all the folks trying to perfect the science of vaping, experimenting with wire, and lending their knowledge to the cause. Hats off to all our brave pioneers - super_X_drifter among them! I'm so grateful for the groundbreaking my friend - might not even be a non smoker today if it was not for you! :toast:

I did my fair share of research on the subject guys before I even thought to quit the stinkers. The development of the electronics in vaping was lagging way behind tech standards...and still is. Which presents a great opportunity for all of us to contribute.

Truth is the microcoil is not novel to this industry and harkens back all the way to the dawn of electronics. There is plenty of prior history. But as best as I can determine it SxD's adaptation is unique to vaping if considered in the context of both design and function, it's geometry and its electrical effect. The latter being the very reason we're attracted to it's use and the great resulting vape we get from it. Thanks supe for the inspiration!

Good luck all, get that tensioned vape on!

:)
