Funny how we all call this a "family," when - be honest - most of us hoomons don't get along as well with our real family (brothers, sisters, aunt, uncles, cousins) as we do with the folks on this thread. I, personally, feel much closer to some of you, which means blood is not thicker than vapor. :)

Hey, I have a question for you folks. It probably only applies to the older members, but we were kicking around some antique phrases last night and one of them, that I remember vividly from childhood (yes, back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth) was, "Ya buy 'em books and ya sends 'em to school and look; can't take 'em to a snake race." Lannie's father, on the other hand, used to say, "Ya buy 'em books and ya buy 'em books and they just chew the covers." Do any of you remember such a phrase? Or something similar? And if so, what was it? (Obviously depends on what part of the country you lived in, but Lannie and I grew up only 40-50 miles apart, even though I was nine years earlier.)

@KatzWh1skers - Sure.. PM me anytime you like.

@liblue1 - that is funny you said you were the original bare foot gal. I hate shoes and am forever walking around barefoot. My husbands family keeps trying to get me to wear shoes (I think they think it's weird I wont wear them! lol) but my preference is definitely barefoot! Something we have in common!

@angelphyre I am so happy for you that you got to have a nice lunch with your son! Wonderful~!

@anjelvape77 - yes, this place does have such a nice homey feel to it!

@Fuzzy Thunderbear - As you said barn chores I must say that you must have your animals trained better than mine were! When I had the farm I use to grain my cattle every morning so they would stay very easy to handle since it was a small farm, and the chickens and such of course even though they were literally free range in a manner most people don't do it, as I let mine run wild daily, I still grained them every morning as well..

at any rate, I was up at 4 am every day since I got farm chores done prior to going to work every day, but before going out to start chores I would sit in the living room and have coffee, it was my time of day. The couch was directly opposite to the sliding glass door and bank of windows on that side of the house, so the view from the couch was the out of doors..

without fail, every single morning, I would start my day, trying to have a peaceful cup of coffee, with hundreds of animals all staring at me through the glass like "hey, hurry it up! We are starving out here! hahaha.. they all gathered round just to stare me down and try and make my coffee time into lets make her feel guilty time! :D

I don't think my animals would have ever let me sleep til 7! I am sure thy would have figured out a way to wake me up had I ever slept in that long!

To everyone else - good afternoon! :)

Count, I don't know why but for some reason I can picture you being the perfect lounge lizard! :p:lol:
Who, me?

Well this is a first in a long time.... I've stayed logged in long enough to get all six posts in... Woohoo I'll take victories no matter how small they are.
Almost, Slow... you need to go back to date and number post # 6.

That reminds me of when I was growing up and we had 15 feral cats living in our yard. They would all sleep together in a huge bundle of fur on the patio furniture and when the first person awake made the slightest bit of noise in the kitchen, fifteen cat heads would suddenly stick up and swivel in that direction.

I suppose I didn't tell the "whole story"... Lannie is up at NLT 5 AM (often earlier). At first light, she goes out to the coop and frees all those little peckers to "free range" the property. We used to grain them at oh-dark-thirty, but I figured they could get their own daytime snacks, what with all the bugs around here that they can eat. I fill their feeder during evening chores, just before they come into the coop to go to bed at sunset (yes, all our animals are well trained). When the last one goes through the pop door, I close that so no skunks (pick a small predator) can go in there and chew on the chickens, and one of our Pyrs sleeps nearby to make double-sure no one bothers them. The sparrows get in through cracks and have some of the chickens' wheat, but generally, they have a full feeder for late-night snacks or first thing in the morning before Lannie lets them all out.

There are, however, a few chickens who come wait around by the back door of the house, begging treats. Lannie often throws out a handful of cat food and they gobble that down eagerly. At about that same time, the cats who have been out hunting all night wander into the house, have a snack, then find a bed or chair to sleep on.

I was getting a nice little visual of you cooping up the chickens in the eve @Fuzzy Thunderbear ....I noticed the ole foodie trick works pretty good on getting my indoor/outdoor cats in for the night too. They would make some coyote a nice snack. I have a good friend in Indiana who lives out in the country...At one point I remember there being like 20 or so wild kits and kats ....lounging in various places until the promise of food brought them swarming to the back door.
@angelphyre @tiggerrts ...sure hope someone thot to bring along some chickens....I love my eggs...and I'm sure someone here can cook a mean Fried Chicken! ..will be interesting to see how all of our talents will come in handy on the Island...I can already see Fuzzy scouting out the place...hope it's a BIG island, or he might get bored real quick:rolleyes:
I will be doin lots and lots of fishin...and gathering coconuts and berries and such...and I can help with the shelter building...not like I used to...:glug: ..day dreamin of life on the Island...

Food is the easiest way to train any animal. Some people try to use a big stick, but that only makes the animal fear you and want to stay away from you. What does any creature want? FOOD! (even people) Control that and you control the animal. All of our critters recognize Lannie and me as the supplier of their food, so when we want a cow to come into the stanchion to be milked, put her favorite dish in the feeder and she'll be waiting to get in. There are some feral cats that hang around our property too (just passing through), but we keep the cat food inside the house and don't leave anything outside for the ferals to eat, so they typically grab a mouse or twelve and come back next week.
I can already see Fuzzy scouting out the place...hope it's a BIG island, or he might get bored real quick
Yeah. Scouting! We need more space! And you can be sure, I'll take lots of pictures, so y'all keep yer clothes on! :)

An alpine meadow, just below Beartooth Pass (north exit from the park - there are five entries/exits, and I've done them all). I cannot resist trying every road or trail at one time or another... what's over there? How about over there? Can I get up that mountain? Can I climb down that cliff? I just gotta know!

@CountBoredom - lol.. that sounds cute! (unless or until they scratch you anyway!)

@Fuzzy Thunderbear - lol.. making the wife do all the work are you? hahaha.. jk. The way I had the chicken coop set up was different as that I made the chicken coop out of a semi-trailer (picked it up free and it was watertight, woohoo!) I fenced in a yard around that, and in warm weather I didn't close the door. They were able to get in and out of their yard at will, because I never fully clipped them.. I kept it down enough to where they could still fly up and protect themselves, but not enough for them to go too high or too far.. so basically whether I had the fence gate open or not, they came and went as they pleased.. The only time I closed the trailer door was when it was cold out..

I used to keep a wolf, who was pretty good about keeping most other predators away, and who was smart enough after the first go he had at my chickens, to stop hunting our livestock..

None of our chickens are clipped, but they're too fat to fly more than a few feet (the Guineas, however, are practicing Kamikazes). At one point, I had a totally enclosed run (even a top screen) around the coop, but between the horses and a steer, all of whom decided that chicken wire made great scratching material, the run soon became impossible to maintain. We found that we didn't need it because the chickens all followed us, knowing where their food came from, so rather than keep them in, we let them free range because they all come back to roost at sunset (when I fill their feeder). Now that is just normal practice. When you find something that works, don't mess with it. ;)

Yeah... well, she's the one who wanted all these critters. I'd be just fine with just my cats and my drawing/drafting board & computer. Lannie had a dream of becoming a farmer. I merely "tolerate" the farm because she wants it. I'd much rather be up a mountain somewhere. Like this:

138 Beartooth Pass is 10947 feet elevation.jpg

Beartooth Pass. The elevation of the highway here is 10,947 feet. Once you pass that point, you're gonna fry your brakes on the steep switchbacks until you get to the bottom, where you suddenly find that you're back in Montana.

He couldn't help it, tiggs loves slurpees.... Slurp, slurp, slurrrp.. Owe brain freeze . Count comes around the corner :pop:, enjoying the day. "Where have you been Count?" asks a few "You were the one who got the new shinny aren't you? Your evidence is everywhere." Count laughs, this is too easy "I only eat buttered popcorn, that is caramel covered popcorn on the ground, case closed." Count walks away with a devilish grin :sneaky::pop:. Then it must be mac, where is he? Shawn walks over to the bird cage and examines the shiny. Looking closer he sees some form of writing, but it seems Greek to him. While no one is looking a red balloon flies through the air.

1.
Super busy today. No time to get online. Woke up late, went to the mailbox and there sets my water bill and it's double what it normally is and we haven't changed our habits any. They either read it wrong or the leak in the bathroom I just noticed the other day has been leaking for a good 2 months since we are billed a month behind. (This months bill is for July - August). Anyway, it was 120.00 which is about the same as I pay for electric. I went up there and they are supposed to send someone out to recheck the meter. I also emailed the landlord and made a maintenance request for them to come fix the leaking tub faucet. Haven't heard back from them yet..grr.

Then I had to get gas and buy groceries. Gas was $1.86 a gallon, I had 50cents off in fuel points so I only paid $1.36 a gallon.

I'm finally back home and have supper in the oven. Lemon pepper chicken breasts.. yummy.

I'm tired and stressed out. Hopefully we can get this water thing taken care of. I can't afford to pay that every month.

A little tired and a litte excited about today's road trip. I'm hand delivering our competition entries to the Arcola Broomcorn Festival's Annual National Art Broom competition. This is the fourth year... first year, I won first, and Stepdot took fourth. Second year, I won first, Stepdot won second. Last year, I won third, and Stepdot was first. This year, Stepdot is going to win first again... she made a STUNNING broom... I might place... maybe... I got a bit rushed... Still, I think it shows to go ya, we are the #1 broom shop!

9/3 - 1: The Island of Angel, episode two.
The tree family was tired after that exciting day, and rested for the night; but their minds kept wandering who? The next day as they stir, the new shinny is sitting in a bird cage. :?: What? Up walks Uncle "We are on an island, what did you expect?"
There is a set of footprints in the sand, but not feet... Someone had tiptoed with their shoes off, and on the other side there was a trail of popcorn. Someone agile like Mac, he lived on an island before and knows his way, think some. The guilty dog barks first and was eating popcorn :pop:, it must be Count; thought others. There is a sound of pain around the corner, and the people rush to see. It is Bella :( "Brain freeze" she states while holding up a Slurpee.
When did we get a Slurpee machine, and what happened to the camel?

Lunch was good and it helped everyone greatly:), but the thought could not get out of their heads. At that moment Mac shows up on his bike. "Mac where have you been?" "Riding my bike around the island it has been great!":D "Can you prove it?" "Why?" asks Mac. "You got that new shinny didn't you, do you have a witness to riding around?" Um no . Uncle and Ranger come up "You know the :rules:, we do not have a jail on the Island of Angel, so you must be guarded at all times of the day, until this is figured out." This doesn't look good thinks Mac . GMO invites everyone over to his place to have their favorite juice and relax for a while.

Where do you live that gas is that cheap? We are currently paying $1/gallon more than you and the brand I buy is pumped out of the ground and refined only one state away (Wyoming), so delivery charges are not responsible for that difference.

Think the Love Boat theme.... or Rico in Barry Manilow's "Copacabana". Sleazy in looks and sound. (I also performed a mean lounge lizard version of Fleetwood Mac's "You Make Lovin' Fun" during my bachelor party, but that's a story for another time.)

Can't wait RR..........I sure hope it & you don't blow up...........the last thing I need is another nightmare of batteries going BOOM..............
If y’all could have seen me being so cautious…it was quite funny. Me nor the mod blew up, in fact it didn’t hit very hard at all. Which may mean it’s not functioning properly, but I used fresh married batteries exclusively for it. More research is needed, but she sure is beeyouteafull! She came with a matching tiffany dripper, but I'm going to build that tonight. The picture doesn't not do her justice. ;)

Northwest MS, right on the stateline with TN. There's 2 things that are cheap in this town and that's gas and cigarettes. You pay out the nose on everything else. My rent and food costs are outrageous.

Last year when I was still smoking, my cigarettes were only three dollars and something for Marlboro Special blends and I always used coupons so I paid less than 3 dollars a pack for them. Vaping costs me waaayy more than smoking ever did.
