Well I didn't know it was going to cause such a commotion here all about "likes"........
To "Like" or Not to "Like" . . .

@tiggerrts, @Fuzzy Thunderbear, @KatzWh1skers, @bellastarr, @jpf880, & @rangerrobin . . .

For All of "You" who "Liked" that post . . .
cheer-up-smiley-emoticon-1.gif

10/31 - 6: Good to get this conversation started, the answer will not be tonight; as Blue said 'Don't worry about it" However as I learn, I will continue to like those posts with negative news. I will choose to show them love, and support them.....:tumble:
I said "don't worry about it" because it's my way of being.......I am in the "NOW" and the only way to be there is to release the past.....is by acknowledgement.......

Good morning, everyone.

Dale, I'm glad things were not as bad for your father as you feared.

As for "Likes," I use them for certain reasons:
1) I like what someone has posted.
2) To acknowledge a post that includes a response to something I posted.
3) To show support to that person for the trouble or situation through which they are going.
4) When some makes a statement that I agree with (usually on a serious subject) or makes a point that I find thought-provoking.
5) If a post touches me somehow--it makes me laugh, feel sad, nostalgic, etc.
6) To show support for favorite vendors here on ECF.
7) If a post touches on an inside joke to which I'm privy, such as someone using a reference from this thread in another contest thread. I may not involve myself in the conversation, but it does catch my interest.
8) In "favorites" or other theme-type contests, I'll like a post if it would be something that I might have posted or is one that I consider a favorite as well.

And for those of you thinking today is a lot of 1's... just wait ten more days!
I must agree with Count in the way I use them.......but in this thread since I want everyone to feel comfortable I read & like as many as I can.....for support/acknowledgement.........

@Roadtrip635 I am really likin the "old abandoned House" pics. Reminds me of the MidWest..there are alot of such houses out there in the rural areas. When I was a kid, we told the teacher about a "haunted house" a few blocks from the school. We actually ended up taking a FIELD TRIP there after school with the teach! Now you don't see THAT much anymore on a whim!!
Turns out..this was a Victorian style home..in very good condition...but looked to be abandoned at the time....It had the sheets covering furniture inside...the cobwebs...you name it. It is worthy to note that it was later converted into some sort of historic bldg....It still stands ...and looks much better now, btw...then it did 50 years ago :)

@Fuzzy Thunderbear ...enjoying the story ... :)
This is a very nice pic by the way...It looks like it should be a Christmas card ...but it needs Lannie in it

Thanks Katz!
When I was a kid there was a "haunted" house right next to the school, the estate actually bordered right next to the playgorund. The house and estate were quite large and people lived there, so we were told, but we never saw them or even saw cars there, kinda weird. We'd seen a couple odd things from the playground, several of us witnessed a large 2' stone frog statue move! I swear to this day we all saw it hop, maybe an inch, freaked us out and we went running.

We usually never played close to the fence, but one time we were too close and I kicked a ball over the 10' fence and the teacher made me go retrieve it. I had to go knock on the door and ask permission......aw hell no! Word spread across the playground that someone had to go to the house. Kids were all lined up at the back gate, friends were saying their goodbyes, not expecting me to return.......

I did it, but I heard and saw things in the house that freaked me out. I finally found the ball and had a really creepy experience, to this day, can't quite figure out how it happened. When I finally got the ball in my hands, I ran as hard and fast as my little legs could carry me, sure that there were hellhounds on my trail. I finally broke into the clear from the trees and vegetation, the kids could see me from the fenceline and I could hear them shouting to run......

When I made it to the back gate of the playground, I was shaking and all the kids were cheering me. I was like a conquering hero, kids were cheering and jumping all over me. I was the only kid we had ever heard of going over there and coming back and I had brought back the ball. It was the talk of elementary school for a long time....

I think she is the one who took the pic so it would be hard for her to be in it too.

-- story time continued - Part 4

The bridge crew did little the next three days but lay around in the tall grass soaking up sunshine while Flannery and his crew worked on the ship. On the morning of the fourth day, Flannery showed up under the apple tree where the Captain sat with Lt. James, intending to report his progress.

"Holy Mother, this is a large tree!" exclaimed Flannery.

Lt. James looked up and said, "You should see the rest of the forest. Easily twice the height of the trees back home. Must have something to do with this low gravity. "

"Oh." Flannery turned his attention to O'Reiley. "Anyway, we've done the best we can, Captain. I suppose it's now or never."

O'Reiley looked up as though he couldn’t care less. "Sean, my friend, have ya never seen such a beautiful place as this? I do wish we didn't have to go. Ah, but bein' the good captain that I am, I suppose it's onward and upward."

Flannery looked quizzically at the Captain, then at James. "What's come over him? He's never been this friendly and peaceable before in his life!"

James, who usually has his nose up against a computer screen, also displayed a look of indifference, but as usual, responded quickly. "Trace elements! Must be. Still, I can't figure it exactly, but there's certainly something here that's put the giggles into everyone. I believe the good Captain has overdosed on fresh air. Even Ol' Callahan pulled off her tunic yesterday and bounced merrily across the meadow, chasing poor Doc. From the look on his face when they returned, I'd hazard a guess that she caught him too."

Flannery scratched his head and thought about the lucky doctor. "I guess I haven't noticed. Me an' the troops have been wearing breathers due to the chemicals we've been molding. We've been on ship's air. Shall we go crank it up?"

They all wandered into the ship and O'Reiley giggled, then pressed his nose up against the intercom. "Ever-body to yer stations! Get yerselves ready fer liftoff! Callahan, you little sweetie, do whatever it is yer supposed to be doin' at a time like this. James, lad, punch a button or two and let's see if this thing goes anywhere."

The ship began to rise slowly. They were just clear of the tree tops, hovering, when a shudder ran through the entire ship, followed by a tremendous explosion that blew the entire lower quarter of the ship into thousands of little pieces, peppering the hill with organic shrapnel. The rest of the ship fell like a rock and buried itself in the hillside so that only the nose-cap and a few feet of fuselage stood above ground.

When the ship had settled, everyone picked themselves up from various piles of junk and crawled around, still giggling like children. Flannery crawled through the hatch and peered up at the Captain, who was sitting in a corner laughing. "You guys are all drunk! You've gone and blown my engines to space dust! What fool idiot punched in hyperdrive while we was hovering?"

"Stow it, ya ole poop!" Callahan peeked over a smoking console.

Flannery fished out his pipe and sat down on a fallen I-beam. "Looks like you've gotten your wish, Captain. We aren't going anywhere now. Not ever. This is home-sweet-home from now on. If you lot sober up, you can help me bury the engine crew - what's left of 'em."

As Flannery disappeared back down the corridor, O'Reiley sheepishly gazed at the remaining bridge crew. "Not such a terrible problem, really. I mean, there's worse places to spend the remaining days of yer life." He stared at the now blank view screens a minute, then asked, "Doc, suppose we ought to thaw the cargo and introduce them to their new home?"

Yeah no trick or treaters last night...they moved it to Friday night here because of the impending weather...and because of that we didn't have very many then...so now we have lots of candy left.

Not going to be able to go do wood today. Our hay man called this morning and said he'd deliver tomorrow, so I have to spend the day sorting the cow barn and moving things so he'll have plenty of room in the hay room.

Lannie at Pine Mountain Observatory, checking out a global (typing too fast) GLOBULAR cluster through the 24" Schmidt Cassegrain telescope. Most of the time we worked there (weekends during summer), she ran the 24" for the visitors to see neat things, while I gave the lectures in the 32" 'scope building, then drifted around the grounds answering questions or filling in on the 15" or 24" 'scopes so those operators could take a break.

I will never understand how they can move a Holiday like Halloween.....it's about the day not the event...you can't reschedule it....it falls on the 31st..when the veil between the worlds are the thin and things can come through......and that's that!!!!!
but I get that they must protect the children from stormy weather.....(not in my day, rain, snow, hail it didn't matter, we went out to scare away the ghosts/goblins/phantoms)...

Actually, I believe it was moved (and renamed) when the first Christian church (Catholics) swept over all the Celtic/Gaelic countries. The original Samhain (pronounced Sah-wen) was November 1st (though November was not the name of the month back then - "November" is from the Latin for "9th month"). The Gaelic people only recognized two seasons: Light/warm and cold/dark, and Samhain was New Year's Day to them. The celebration of the new year (the end of the light/warm days and the beginning of the dark months... Dark, which is where the Church came up with demons, evil spirits, etc., to make people afraid of this pagan celebration) was a three-day festival to celebrate the end of working on crops (the plants are dying now), salting the meat for storage through winter, all the grain and hay is in storage, etc., etc. and it is now time to celebrate the harvest (see also Germany: Octoberfest). Samhain, being November 1st, started at sunset the previous night, which is where we came up with October 31st, the evening children were permitted sweet treats, often given out by their neighbors. At midnight, all bonfires were to be extinguished in memory of those who had died in the past year and the chief druid lit a new one, the first bonfire of the new year. During the dark between the old fires and the new one, the veil between dimensions was supposed to be thinnest, and everyone toasted the spirits, some even believing this was the time to contact the dead. The Church, of course, had a heyday with this concept, and made it as evil as possible. While the Gaelic/Celtic folks called this All Hallow's Eve (from whence came Hallowe'en), the Church claimed November 1st as All Saint's Day (so October 31st became All Saint's Eve). This, of course, could be explained for many many more pages, but...

As Blue just implied, who can move the new year? Politicians. How about we celebrate every holiday on Monday so the government can have a three-day weekend? Would you ring in our version of New Year's Eve on, oh, say December 28th or January 3rd?

I just have to pop in here for a second! I'm still not in this contest because I don't have the time to spend, but soon I will be back! Anyway, Rich, it's a "globULAR cluster!" LOL! And actually that particular day it was my "test" to qualify me to fly solo on the 24" by finding Jupiter at noon. Remember? And yes, I passed. :D

On the same subject, I remember one night where this guy stood in a line all the way out the door and down the stairs, and when it was finally his turn, he wanted me to find Mars for him. At that point, Mars was really low on the horizon, and I could barely pick it out between the tops of the pines. I told him it wouldn't look very good, and offered to find a double star or a galaxy or something instead, but nooooo, he wanted to see MARS. So I found it for him. He climbed up the ladder to look, then turned around and said, "IT'S ALL BLURRY!" I tried to explain to him about atmospheric distortion, being down close to the horizon and such, but he was just totally bummed, and said, "And to think I drove all the way up here and stood in a line for an hour to see an orange BLOB!" at which point he huffed off back down the stairs and presumably left. Most of the time, working up there was fun, but there were a fair number of killjoys like him...

And now I'm off again! I promise within the next few weeks I'll get back here, but things have been so unbelievably crazy lately, it's just impossible right now.
