Glycerin

So, if I wanted to make my own e-liquid, with which I could refill cartridges, or drip, what would I need to do? Is it possible to do this from scratch by:

1. simmering tobacco in water, straining (with laboratory grade filters )

and

2. adding vegetable glycerin?

I'm just looking for a pretty detailed recipe for diy smoke juice. Is there a way to test the nicotine content? What are the parts per whole for each ingredient?

I do homebrew beer and I'd really like to be able to make my own e-liquid. I'm looking for a basic, but detailed recipe, that I can maybe eventually play with.

I'd buy a book, but they haven't gotten around to it yet and I know many of you are still experimenting.

Sorry if this was answered somewhere else. I'm just a little confused.

I've picked up the Humco Glycerin.

Used my existing cart that was starting to dry up.

Dripped a drop of glycerin into the atomizer.
Dripped a drop of Bickford's Melon flavor into the atomizer.
Dripped 5 drops of the Melon onto the top of the cart.

Smoked, smoked, smoked that ecigarette!

Excellent vapor, excellent flavor, excellent recommendations all around! Thanks everyone - esp. Naz! :D

I note if I do use too much durign day, stomach gets quite rumbly with gas- but mind you, I'm smoking htis stuff very heavily.
Naz, do you know from all your esmoking experience that using regular carts, regular liquid, in the same amounts, avoids this gas problem (and sorry if I missed you discussing this already). I'm wondering because heavy smoking can cause gas due to all the air that is inhaled.

No I'm almost positive it's the Glycerin- With the regular cartridges, I get a little bit of the rumbling, but as soon as I start refilling, or dripping Glycerin on the atomizer, the rumbling really takes off big time, and if I stop for a bit- after a few hours, it settles down a bit- I've tested htis quite a few times, and the resulkts are always hte same for me. you may not have a problem with it- TB and Cash both don't seem to have any problems with Glycerin- but Cash does with the Propylene Glycerol- just hte opposite of me.

Just quickly a basic recipe would be:

50/50 Propylene Glycerol (Or PG as we call it- you can get soem from Bickfordflavors.com but you have to call them and ask for it) and Glycerin-

Take your SIMMERED down tobacco jouice (Don't boil it- just simmer it down till nice and dark and a bit thick-take a handfull of tobacco, drop in a cup or two of distilled water, and simmer it down), and put about 20% in a bottle, add your 50/50 PG/Glycerin, add a dropper full or so of flavoring of choice (but make sure it's an extract with only PG, flavoring and water- you can get these from Bickfords as well)

So here is hte basic proportions broken down:

80% of PG/Glycerin mixture

18% of Tobacco juice

2% of flavoring

And yes, do use lab quality filtering for hte juice if you can get them, the less dirty the tobacco juice, the better. There may be a way to test the nic content, but I'm not aware of how- plus I think TB said nicotine rapidly evaporates when exposed to air- but I think we are still getting soem nicotine in our mixtures- but I could be wrong- Probably hte best htign to do is to buy some manufactured eliquid juice, and add this to your homemade juice about 50/50

That's a good recipe to follow. I do use commercial E-Liquid, just so I can have an idea how much nicotine I'm assured of. I use the highest, 24mg, commercial liquid. I don't add any PG because it's already in both the Bickford flavor and the commercial liquid. And I use about the same amount of cooked juice as Naz does, but more flavoring -- 1/4th for me. I want that Bickford Kahlua to clobber me!

It's all fun and not dangerous in any unique way, I believe. I've not experienced atomizer or health problems that I can relate to homebrew. Course, if I look cross-eyed at an atomizer, it's dead the next morning. If my nose is stuffy, I'll sleep with my mouth open and wake up to a sore throat from breathing air-conditioned air through it all night. Who knows?

I'm think that we should probably cut down the amount of water/tobacco juice to somethign around 5-10%. I know htis would cut down on the nicotine content, but I'm thinking it might be better for the atomizer. I think havign too much water can damage the atomizer. I'd actually like ot find soem 'nocotine/tobacco extract/flavor' somewhere to cut down hte amount of water even further. If you'll note on Wikipedia, the ingredients for the Ruyan in the 4 'recipes' listed don't have hardly any water in them and include tobacco essence/flavoring. The only hting is that htey do have a way of adding pure nicotine to coem up with known nicotine levels, which is an advantage that we homebrewers don't have

I've never found a tobacco extract flavor, because who would want to cook with that? But ... there are tobacco fragrance oils for sale. Yes, it's an oil, but E-Cig uses four types of tobacco oils and Rutoo lists an oil among its liquid ingredients. Obviously, quantity is everything. I've wondered if one drop of tobacco fragrance oil might not boost the taste we experience.

Ever notice how when you're around a really strong fragrance/odor, that you begin to "taste" it? Or, if you sniff nasal snuff, you quickly "taste" it. Aroma and taste are womb mates, fraternal twins. So if we kick up aroma for fragrance, we might get a tobacco taste hit. We also might get a clogged atomizer! Which is what stops me from doing it. I'm sure there is more than one source for tobacco fragrance oil, but this is one I keep coming back to because of small size and reasonable price:

Candles and Candle Supplies - Dad's Pipe Tobacco Fragrance Oil/candle Scent

One other thought: I believe someone here mentioned having Perique liquor. It's made in England and extremely costly and hard to get in the U.S. I'd like for someone to add a few drops of Perique liquor to an e-smoking mix and see how it tastes. Perique tobacco is grown only in one small area of Louisiana, and sells for a small fortune. It's very, very powerful stuff to smoke, but the alcohol contains no nicotine.

Threshold: I'm still enjoying my Kahlua mixes. And, er, the bottle I bought from a health food store, and the bottle that Amazon sells, is labeled Vegetable Glycerine. Course, we can call it holy water, makes no difference, but you'll find Vegetable Glycerine for sale in the U.S. We often shorten it to VG, as opposed to PG. Where do you live? Don't see it with your information. Come on over and we'll puff a few!
